The caged bird singing a song, forlorn
Touching the vast terrain, the tall sky mourned
Oh thee, which way were you drifting
Alone, you forgot the vast earth and sky
The perching bird singing a song, unaware
Of the hollering wind and weary blue sky
Oh thee, do sing not in a flock
But a lonesome voice of parched sorrow
Sad melodies over the barren alleys
Mourning for the solitary human fate
The lone water lily floating anxiously
Forever searching for a dwelling place
Dream of being a rock standing incognizant
Stony innards exposed, impervious to pain
"How to know if stones are without feelings?"
Perhaps they cry till the times are fading
Nhớ Nguyễn Du
trên đường qua Quỷ Môn Quan*
Ngồi đây đọc sách ngàn trang cũ
ngoài đó lao xao vẫn chiến trường
tuyết bão vào song, mưa cứ đổ
tưởng người xưa, dưới Quỷ Môn Quan
Đường qua cửa quỷ, mây vần vũ
ngàn dặm về Nam, nhớ bóng ai
gió xác cây xao cuồng vó ngựa
đầu non trăng rụng, vượn than dài
Ngán ngẩm mặt người không muốn ngó
ấm lòng đã có rượu vài chung
tuổi chưa già, cớ sao lười lĩnh
chỉ ngắm nhà kia ngủ gác non
Tương quan bè bạn là không có
thì bận lòng chi chuyện đón đưa
thôi, cảm ơn đời thêm chút nữa
cho ta quán trọ dưới trời mưa

* Nguyễn Du, qua bài "Quỷ Môn Đạo Trung"
In Memory of Nguyen Du*
on the way to the Demon's Gate Pass
Sitting here, I read the thousand-page classic
Out there still, the noisy rumblings of battles
The snowstorm though the window, rain pounded
Was that his old figure, beneath the Demon’s Gate Pass?
The way through Demon’s Gate, under thick dark clouds
Recalling his shadow, thousand of miles from south
Trees swayed by a breeze, agitating the horse’s gallop
Setting moon over mountaintop, gibbons sighed
Tired of human faces, he didn’t want to look
A few cups of heart-warming wine were all it took
Turning lazy even when age wasn’t old
Lay asleep while admiring that old abode
Friends, he was without them
Worried not of those who came
Here’s to life, a few words of thanks again
for a place to shelter from the rain
* Nguyen Du is Vietnam’s beloved poet,
with stature similar to that of Shakespeare
Cảm ơn Tạo Hóa
Cảm ơn Tạo Hóa sinh ra tôi
bản chất ngàn năm không mất nổi
sinh ra tay trắng giữa cuộc đời
tư sản tôi còn nguyên một khối
Tôi biết đường tôi đi hôm nay
bàn tay khối óc và gân máu
tất cả đều không giống cỏ cây
tất cả đều không giống một ai
Tôi chẳng sinh ra như giọt nước
đúc khuôn dài ngắn đổ từng hột
thành anh lính nhỏ mặc đồng phục
vô thủy vô chung về đại dương
Tạo hóa sinh tôi rất riêng biệt
cá tính vươn dài theo thức thao
tôi xin từ chối mặc đồng phục
để lớn khôn vừa với rộng cao

Thank You Creator
Thank you Creator for my existence
Whose nature hasn't changed for a millennium
Born into life with hands bare
My possession, the lot I still have
Aware that the road I take today
My hands, brains and veins
None of which resemble grasses and plants
None of which resemble another human
I wasn't born to be a water drop
Cast in measurements one by one
A little toy soldier in uniform
Marching to sea, without beginning or end
Creator gave me my distinct traits
My nature thrives on awareness
I refuse to wear the uniform
So I can grow wise and lofty

Sao không nói gì hết
ngủ ăn rồi ngủ ăn
cõi đời hay cõi mộng
đi, về một bóng câm
Thức dậy, mau thức dậy
cái gì trong con người
thứ bom nào nổ chậm
cơn sốt nào vỡ da
Bao lần tôi tự hỏi
giữa buổi tiệc chưa tàn
bao lần tôi tự hỏi
cúi đầu sau xe tang
Còn chăng hay đã hết
câu chuyện của loài dơi
hai ngàn năm sờ soạng
tìm chưa thấy mặt trời
Hai ngàn năm lửa đỏ
chập chững dấu chân tìm
đường còn xa vạn dặm
- quá khứ hãy nằm im -
Tương lai tiếp tương lai
mình đây là quãng nối
sợi chỉ và cây kim
níu địa cầu đôi cõi
Nhỏ nhoi thay kiếp người
đau thương thì hiện hữu
vết bầm trong xương tủy
sờ nát đầu ngón tay
Ai ngày xưa rơi lệ
mình nước mắt nhỏ sa
nhớ thương tràn thương nhớ
kỷ niệm đầy tha ma
Tử sinh đành hữu hạn
bơ vơ càng bơ vơ
trăm năm là một kiếp
luân hồi chuyện sau xưa

Tears
Heaven and Earth are limitless,
Alone, I shed these tears.
- Ch’en Tzu-Ang (Tang Dynasty)
Why are we wordless
we eat then we sleep
is this life or a dream
and we mute as shadows
Wake up, oh, wake up
beware of this thing
this time-bomb, though unexploded
like a fever, breaks our skin
Many, so many times
while a feast’s still on
while I walk behind a hearse
I have asked myself
After two thousand years
are the bats still flying
flying madly and flying blind
without finding the sun?
After two thousand years of fire
we still walk like children
on a road without end
- oh, the past, please lie still -
As the future unrolls
we are the link
we are the needle and thread
which holds the earth’s poles
How puny are our lives
“I suffer, therefore I am”
bruises are hidden in our marrow
our fingertips are crushed by pain
Someone shed tears in the past
so now I may weep alone
what’s left but long lost
memories - a burial site
Birth and Death are our limits
between these we’re on our own
a few years of existence
we’ll leave it to Reincarnation?
