2. Mục tiêu của học phần

Nắm vững cách sử dụng và ghi nhớ được một số lượng lớn các thuật ngữ tiếng Anh chuyên ngành Kinh tế (khoảng 1000 thuật ngữ).

Hiểu được một số khái niệm và các vấn đề có liên quan trong các lĩnh vực của chuyên ngành Kinh tế bằng tiếng tiếng Anh.

Nẵm vững một số quy tắc ngôn ngữ và quy tắc văn phạm cơ bản trong việc diễn đạt các nội dung chuyên ngành Kinh tế bằng tiếng Anh.

Hiểu được một số văn bản mang tính chất nghi thức trong hoạt động giao dịch kinh tế thương mại bằng tiếng Anh như báo cáo tài chính, báo cáo phân tích, thư tín thương mại, chứng từ kế toán, các mẫu biểu nghiệp vụ, ...

3. Nội dung chi tiết học phần

CHAPTER I. MICRO- AND MACRO-ECONOMICS

1.1. Vocabulary

1.1.1. Vocabulary learning tips & practice (related to management field – jobs, working environment)

1.1.2. Distinguish commonly confused pairs of words; Rearrange letters to form a term; Complete the crossword with the given cues

1.2. Reading comprehension

1.2.1. To lead-in by discussing answers for given questions about econo5mic circulation and agents; improve vocabulary by taking the Word Formation exercise complete

1.2.2. Study the given questions then skim and scan the text to get the right answers (with greater focus on highlighted words and phrases)

1.2.3. Read the text then do related exercises: mark statements true/ false based on the text)



1.3. Grammar

1.3.1. Master Relative clauses: forms & usage with lots of practice

1.3.2. Do the assigned and extra exercises related: giving definitions of words; filling in blank; combining groups of sentences; choosing the best option

1.4. Listening section

1.4.1. Some tips for effective listening and first practice by completing the table of information about the importance of English language after hearing

1.4.2. Listen and underline the correct words/ numbers

1.4.3. Listen and tick the mentioned points

1.4.4. Listen to telephone conversations then invent a similar model

1.4.5. Listen to the results of a survey and decide statements true or false



1.5. Writing section

1.5.1. Introduce common categories and headings used in CVs

1.5.2. Analyze the sample CV

1.5.3. Create a CV



1.6. Speaking section

1.6.1. Things that annoy people when phoning companies

1.6.2. Partner Files: spell names & numbers

1.6.3. Attitudes towards work change constantly

1.6.4. Dos & Don’ts when writing covering letter/ stating work experience/ attending a job interview

CHAPTER II: MANAGEMENT

2.1. Vocabulary

2.1.1. Management levels and areas: organizational structure; job title/ position and responsibility

2.1.2. Relationship at workplace, characteristics/qualities of managers and staff

2.1.3. Practice with stress sound in words & department names in organizations

2.1.4. The usage of and the difference between BA and AE in mgnt field

2.2. Grammar

2.2.1. Introduce common suffixes and prefixes (with vivid examples related to management terms) & Find diversifications for given terms

2.2.2. Complete the Table of Words & Decide proper suffix/ prefix

2.2.3. Passive voice: form, usage, special cases and Practice: choose the best answer; rewrite sentences; choose the correct terms to fill in blanks

2.3. Speaking and Discussion

2.3.1. Arguement on the qualities of a good manager and the nature of management

2.3.2. How many jobs a person has done and how many times one expects to change the job during working life?

2.3.3. Different methods of recruiting right employees

2.3.4. Advantages and disadvantages of working in traditional hierarchy and empowerment organization

2.3.5. Different methods to get career advice (face-to-face meeting with a professional career adviser; chatting to other people online)

2.3.6. How to cope with and solve personnel problems at workplace (match problems with suitable advice; sort out the problems in Gallup Organization which conducted a survey into European attitudes towards managers)

2.4. Reading section

2.4.1. Text: MANAGEMENT – AN ART OR A SCIENCE? -> Mark statement true/ false; search equivalent words for given phrases; circle the best option

2.4.2. Further study the texts accompanied then do required exercises: match pairs of synonyms; mark True/ False

2.4.3. Read attachments then complete the chart about recruitment method in a large multinational in automobile industry.



2.5. Listening section

2.5.1. Listen and take notes to clarify two different kinds of companies: the traditional one with hierarchy and a modern one with empowerment

2.5.2. Hear a recording about St Luke’s advertising agency then answer related questions, mark the stressed words (practice saying as closely as possible)

2.5.3. Listen to a job interview then try to expand the given prompts to full questions of a job adviser

2.5.4. Listen and tick the points mentioned in the recording about psychological tests (to access candidates)

2.6. Writing section

2.6.1. Analyze the structure and style of a model cover letter (with notes and reminding) then match relevant headings for each paragraph

2.6.2. Role and purpose of using a cover letter to accompany a CV (to draw the prospective employer’s attention to the key points in the CV and highlight the candidate’s suitability for a job)

2.6.3. Match formal words & expressions in a cover letter with their informal equivalents

2.6.4. Tips for writing an effective cover letter (concise content and proper punctuation)

CHAPTER III: FINANCE & ACCOUNTING

3.1. Vocabulary

3.1.1. Terms in field of finance & accounting: explanations/ authentic equivalence; articles on popular financial statements

3.1.2. Match halves to complete sentences about the practice of free trade, different types of assets and other accounting entities

3.1.3. Language in use – levels of formality

3.1.4. Specific terms about those and things involved in finance and accounting activity of an organization: manager; chief accountant; editor; state bank; shareholder; creditor; debtor; mortgage; interest rate; L/C

3.2. Reading comprehension

3.2.1. Text: COMPANY FINANCIES (focus on highlighted terms & structures; combined with the given financial statements for deeper understanding and application)

3.2.2. Match accounting terms to their appropriate definitions; complete sentences with given phrases about finance

3.3. Listening section

3.3.1. Listen and find out the difference between traditional and modern management style, the advantages & disadvantages of each

3.3.2. Listen to the failure lesson of a CEO with his established company in a foreign market and fill in the blanks -> later: discuss one’s own lesson drawn from the recording

3.3.3. Hear the recording and make clear the benefits of free trade, effects of the negative/ positive balance of trade towards the economy of a nation

3.3.4. Follow the recording in which an economist talks about free trade then tick the mentioned points, 2 examples of comparative advantages and proof of protectionism

3.4. Grammar

3.4.1. Introducing Visuals and Changes

- Role & benefits of Visuals in professional presentation

- Common types of Visuals about changes & development

3.4.2. Language in use – logical connections: use connectors to complete the sales scripts; role-play as sales rep and potential client

3.4.3. Participles (present and past; the usage and exceptional cases) with practice: join pairs of sentences; choose the best answer; translate some paragraphs;



3.5. Speaking section

3.5.1. Represent at an exhibition or on a stand; model an interview with potential creditors (bankers; credit organizations); encounter financial difficulties; fail to meet the accounting standards and principles

3.5.2. Learn how to settle late payments from debtors and long-term credit from creditors (with the support of pictures and given points)

3.6. Writing practice

3.6.1. Analyze a sample of proforma invoice (with terms and headings to match, some questions to answer)

3.6.2. Create a similar proforma invoice based around the given information (address, specifications of products, price and terms of payment)

3.6.3. Use the given letter and notes as a guide to write a follow-up letter to a potential or loyal customer and another to an outstanding credit organization



CHAPTER IV: INVESTMENT

4.1. Vocabulary

4.1.1. Different forms of investment and types of market/ partner: classify the main characteristics and features of some common types/ forms

4.1.2. Stages and entities involved in the investment process (backward and forward integration, channels of distribution, incurred difficulties or barriers, change in government policies towards investment)

4.1.3. The language of buying and selling, conducting negotiation and haggling (matching halves, doing multiple choice statements)

4.1.4. Overview of the world’s economic and investment climate: the demand and trend of out-sourcing – investment attracting

4.2. Listening section

4.2.1. Listen and tick the fields that are going to be invested in by foreign companies next quarter, in near future, in long-term

4.2.2. Hear some extracts about the methods localities and entrepreneurs constantly use to persuade investors to put money into their business; then match each extract with relevant picture and write down the key words which act as useful clues

4.2.3. Listen to recording about the good and bad points of lacking and over-loaded investment towards a nation in general and SMEs in particular (mark sentences true or false)

4.2.4. Listen and complete useful and common expressions in negotiations; summarize the content of the conversation between the investors and the infant businesses

4.3. Writing section

4.3.1. Use given terms about bad debts, outstanding invoice, terms & conditions of payment to create a letter to chase late payments for a company.

4.3.2. Verbs and words to express changes, trends and development in economic facts and figures (complete a paragraph about one of the most dramatic in financial story – the Wall Street Crash in 1929); Stock market characteristics and terms related to share investment (portfolio; shareholder; dividend); find equivalents to highlighted words/ phrases in a given attachment

4.3.3. Write recommendations on the sales of the Bonzo Pet Food company and its projected figures for the coming year (after studying the given chart); use the information given to produce a short report and mail-shot



4.4. Speaking and Discussion

4.4.1. Pair-work: Invent conversation showing the benefits and advantages that investors may get when they invest in your localities

4.4.2. Model a negotiation or business meeting between partners in which articles and terms of investment contracts are discussed

4.4.3. The guide for the best deal possible and tough trading; rules that are broken in certain situations (win-win or win-lose cooperation)



4.5. Grammar: Reported Speech

4.5.1. Usage and form of reported speech with lots of practice: rewrite sentences; identify changes in verb tense; report the minutes of a meeting;

4.5.2. The effect and difference of using reported speech in business correspondence and job delegation

4.5.3. Color Idioms and Cute Quotes in Marketing & Ad: practice with the interpretation of idioms & quotes & More sayings from students; brand recognition challenge
