ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
There is only one name on the cover of this book, and I find that ridiculous. Yes, I wrote it. Yes, this
book is a reflection of me and my experiences. But this is not
my book. Every single word and every
single step along this journey has been shaped by others. My family, my friends, my colleagues, my
teachers, my community: you’ve made me what I am and this book what it is, and for that, you have
my eternal gratitude. In particular, I’d like to thank Melanie Henley Heyn. This book is a testament to
the adventures that she and I shared. It would not exist without her or be nearly as good without her
courageous editing and support.
As for the others, I’ll start at the beginning. In 2003, my friend Rob Istad casually recommended a
German immersion program that would eventually start this whole journey. Thanks for that; it’s been
quite the ride.
This book was sold thanks to the support of Melanie Pinola and the Lifehacker team; the input of
Brette Popper, Karen Schrock Simring, and Gretl Satorius on the proposal; and the torrent of passion,
knowledge, and all-around kick-assery that continuously pours out of my agent, Lisa DiMona.
Rick Horgan,
my editor, tore me and this book to pieces, and I cannot thank him enough for the
experience. Without his brutal honesty, this book would be
terrible. Seriously.
Andrea Henley Heyn is the best first reader I could have hoped for. Her patience and keen sense of
structure made this book a
lot more sensible to people who don’t live inside of my head. Additional
thanks to Colette Ballew and Meghen Miles Tuttle. Your input was invaluable.
Last but not least, to friend and video editor extraordinaire Nick Martin, and to my dear Kickstarter
backers: I love you all. I’d like to especially thank Joel Mullins,
Marc Levin, Mike Forster, Mike
Wells, Nikhil Srinivasan, and Xavier Mercier for their extraordinary support.
Together, you’ve allowed me to take a book and a few ideas, and turn them into a system with all
the bells and whistles I could have hoped for. Thank you.
