1.5.4 Seiketsu: Standardize
The fourth S, Seiketsu, means ‘Standardization’, that is, maintaining one’s workplace so
that it is productive and comfortable by repeating Seiri-Seiton-Seiso (Osada, 1991). During this
phase of implementation, the team develops the standard operating procedure for establishing the
improved workplace practices (Osada, 1991; Chapman, 2005). There is need of uniformity in the
fourth element of 5S for establishing and ensuring of standards, to guarantee the tidiness and
cleanliness of workplace. The condition of standardized can be attained by Innovation and total
visual management (Hubbard, 1999). Visual management has been envisioned as an effective
mechanism for continuous improvement because it can play important role in production,
quality, safety and customer services by putting up appropriate labels, such as: lubricating oil
label, annual inspection label, responsibility label (Ho, 1997). The benefits of Standardization
include: low maintenance and overhead cost, loyalty to organization and increase of process
efficiency (Sorooshian et al., 2012).
1.5.5 Shitsuke: Sustain
The fifth S ‘Shitsuke’ stands for sustaining all the previous S. Japanese believed that self-
discipline is most important because it reaches beyond discipline. The fifth S is critical to
understand and implement because it requires proactive changes in the behavior of employees at
all levels within an organization (Kobayashi et al., 2008). Shitsuke means ingraining the ability
of doing things the way they are supposed to be done. It helps and encourages the employees of
creating good habits. This element also play important role to make the continuity of daily
routine. It is a process of repetition and act as integral part of the safety (Ho, 2010). In this step

there is always a need of practice to maintain the self-discipline in their daily life for 5S system
and make habit or culture of it within the organization in order to get benefits such as increase of
labor productivity, quality products with no accident at workplace (Patten, 2006; Sorooshian et
al., 2012).
The success of 5S can be ensured with holistic involvement of management in 5S
auditing, feedback on the performance of this technique and encouraging in participating 5S
implementation process (Chapman, 2005). The figure 3 represents the flowchart of working
process by 5S technique in an organization.
