B. Grammar:

I. Defining and non-defining relative clause:

Defining relative clause (Mệnh đề quan hệ xác định)

- MĐQHXĐ không có dấu phẩy

- MĐQHXĐ không thể bỏ được

- Có thể dùng that để giới thiệu MĐQHXĐ

- Có thể bỏ đại từ quan hệ làm tân ngữ who(m), which, that và trạng từ when trong MĐQHXĐ.

Ex: - The man whom / that / zero pronoun I met yesterday was very nice.

- The day when / zero pronoun I went camping was very terrible.



Non-defining relative clause (Mệnh đề quan hệ không xác định)

- MĐQHKXĐ được phân biệt với mệnh đề chính bằng dấu phẩy.

- MĐQHXĐ có thể bỏ được

- Không dùng that để giới thiệu MĐQHKXĐ

- Không được bỏ đại từ quan hệ làm tân ngữ who(m), which, that và trạng từ when trong MĐQHKXĐ.

Ex: - Peter, whom I met yesterday, was very nice.

- That day, when I went camping, was very terrible.



II. Relative pronouns with prepositions:

- Trong MĐQH, khi đại từ qhan hệ làm tân ngữ của giới từ thì giới từ có 2 vị trí đứng: trước các đại từ quan hệ whom which hoặc sau động từ.



Eg1:The woman to whom I give my book was quite friendly.

The woman who / whom / that / zero pronoun I give my book was quite friendly to.



Eg2: This is the house in which I used to live.

This is the house which / that / zero pronoun I used to live in.

- Giới từ không đặt trước that hoặc who

III. Omission of relatives pronoun:

- Chúng ta có thể lược bỏ đại từ quan hệ khi:

+ đại từ quan hệ là tân ngữ trong MĐQHXĐ

Eg: I enjoy the book which / that you lent me yesterday.

I enjoy the book you lent me yesterday.

+ đại từ quan hệ là tân ngữ của giới từ và giới từ đứng sau động từ

Eg: The school which I used to go to is very big.

The school I used to go to is very big.

II. Put who, whom, which, whose, where in the gap

IV. Relative clauses replaced by participles and to infinitives:

- MĐQH có thể được rút gọn bằng cách sử dụng participles (cụm phân từ) hoặc to infinitive (cụm động từ nguyên mẫu)



1. Participles:

a. Present Participles: (V-ing)

- Được dùng để rút gọn MĐQH khi động từ của MĐQH ở dạng chủ động hoặc diễn tả một hành động đang diễn ra.



Eg: The girl who lives next door is very kind.

Relative clause

 The girl living next door is very kind.


Participal phrase


b. Past Participles: (V-ed / V3)

- Được dùng để rút gọn MĐQH khi động từ của MĐQH ở dạng bị động



Eg: The task which is given by Mrs White is very difficult.

Relative clause

 The task given by Mrs White is very difficult.



Past participal phrase

c. To infinitive: (to + V)

- Được dùng sau the first, the second, the last, only, so sánh nhất...



Eg: The first man we must see is Tom.

The first man to see is Tom.

V. Cleft sentences: (cấu trúc câu nhấn mạnh)

1. Subject Focus: (nhấn mạnh chủ ngữ)

It is / was + S + that + V....

Eg: My mother loves me most.

It is my mother that loves me most

2. Object Focus: (nhấn mạnh tân ngữ)

It is / was + O + that + S + V....

Eg: We need pilots.

It is pilots that we need.

3. Adverbial Focus: (nhấn mạnh trạng ngữ)

It is / was + Adverbial phrases + that + S +V + (O)....

Eg: I was born in this house.

It was in this house that I was born.

VI. Could / be able to:

1. Could:

a. Form: Could + V (inf)

b. Use:

- Được dùng để diễn tả một khả năng trong quá khứ



Eg: Our daughter could walk when she was 9 months old.

- Được dùng với các động từ giác quan



Eg: I could see there was something wrong.

2. Be able to:

a. Form: Was / Were + able + to + V (inf)

b. Use:

- Được dùng để diễn tả một sự việc đã được xoay sở để hoàn thành trong qúa khứ



Eg: The fire spread through the building very quickly but everyone was able to escape.
VII. Tag Questions: (Câu hỏi đuôi)

Câu hỏi đuôi được thành lập sau một câu nói khẳng định hoặc phủ định, được ngăn cách bằng dấu phẩy (,).
Cách thành lập câu hỏi đuôi: 
- Trước dấu phẩy là câu khẳng định thì sau dấu phẩy là câu phủ định và ngược lại

Examples: - Peter helped you, didn’t he?

- He isn’t here now, is he?

- You have been there for a long time, haven’t you?

- Không dùng danh từ riêng trong câu hỏi đuôi, mà phải dung đại từ nhân xưng thay thế.

Examples: - Mary is beautiful, isn’t she?

- His parents are old, aren’t they?



- Nếu mệnh đề chính có các từ phủ định như neither, no, none, no one, no body, nothing, scarely, barely, hardly, seldom … thì câu hỏi đuôi ở thể khẳng định.

Examples: - Nothing was sold, was it?

- Peter hardly goes to the party, does he?



- Các trường hợp đặc biệt:

+ Hình thức câu hỏi đuôi của I am … aren’t I?

Eg: I’m late, aren’t I?

- Hình thức của câu mệnh lệnh là: will you?



Eg: Come in, will you?

- Câu đề nghị là: shall we?



Eg: Let’s go for a walk, shall we?
