SELECTION 10
According to the Ch'an tradition , their school originated with certain teachings expounded by Gotama to Maha Kasyapa. This event was called "a transmission of the mind outside the written text." This occurred when gotama, teaching in a garden, levitated a flower. Only Maha kasyapa understood the significance of this acst to mean that there were techings that could not be transmitted through words or text. Buddhism, according to legend, was introduced into China at the beginning of th Christian era. Around A.D. 67, Emperor Ming of the Latter Han dynasty (A.D. 58-75) saw in a dream a golden man, with sunlight issuing from the back of his neck, fly through the air and land on earth. When the emperor asked a court scholar the meaning of this dream, he was told it represented an Indian Buddha.
Ming dispatched an emissary to India to bring the Buddhist teachings back to China. The emissary returned to the Lo Yang court, accompanied by two Indial Buddhist monks and images of the Buddha and sutras. They were welcomed by the emperor and housed in the white. Temple. These monks then began to translate into Chinese a document called "The Sutra in 42 sextions".
Bodhidharma recounted the story of Maha Kasyapa and the flower in the garden to his chief sutdent, Hui-K'O . Bodhidharma, the 28th Patriarch, had come to China as the first Ch'an Patriarch. After his death, Hui - K'O assumed lesdership of the school as the 2nội dung Patriarch. There followed Seng Tsan. Tao Hsin, and Hung Yen.
After Hung's death, a schism split th Ch'an sect into the Northern and Southern Schools. The Northern School was headed by Shen - Hsiu (600-706) . This school taught the concept of gradual enlightenment based on the study of Buddhist texts and meditation practice. The Southern school was headed by Hui - Neng (638-713) and taught belief in instantaneous enlightenment throught meditation, discarding all Buddhist writtings. Each of these men was considered the legitimate 6th Patriarch. Later, other schisms developed

SELECTION 11
In the economics of development, as in other areas, of economic theory, generalization is inescapable. Economists prefer to generalize in the form of abstract models. At their best these models identify the important grouwth variables, invite emprical verification, and open the door to more powerful theories of economic chage.
Perhaps the most widely known scheme of theoretical genaralization is W.W. Rostow's. In this section's first article, Rostow explores the hypothesis that economic growth proceeds in several distinguishable temporal phases. The key statge is "take off", the period during which an economy attains self - sustaining growth. Take - off generally follows the achievement of critical rates of growthin key scctors of the economy. A society that approaches take off is in Rostow's famework a society that has alreadly experienced basic strutural chages in its social and political environment.
Rostow's approach is historical. H.J.Bruton prefers a deductive, non - institutional model. Moreover, his emphasis is upon the forces that support sustained economic growth after the econmy has emerged from the pre -industrialization stage. Although his formal argument centers upon so called mature economies his analysis of the ways to avoid abortive development is highly relevant to the central concerns of this book. Bruton's model is post - key - nesian. It concentrates unon the interrelationship between increases in capital stock and increases innatinal income as these occur in economiesundergotained growth depends on maintaining an appropriate ratio of caital stock to output. His mathematical mode of argument and the argument's abstraction from virtually all institutional data are characteristic ofmuch contemporary development theory.
Gottgried Haberler, the author of the last essay in thissectin, dissents vigorously from some of the as - sumptions of contemporary development thory. Both empirically and logically, Haberler finds good reason to criticcize such concepts as disguised unemployment balanced growth, demonstration effects, and deteriorating terms of trade among the developing nations. Morcover Haberler believes that attachment to such doctrines has encouraged over sanguine expectations of state action and wasteful allocation of the slender resources of the poorer nations.
(Cf. DAVID E.NOVAK, The Dynamics of Econmic Change)
SELECTION 12
Levi Strauss takes a position on myth which is frankly intellectual, and he laments the modern predilection for attributing powers to affedtive life which it does not have. "It is a mistake to think that dear ideas can be born out confused emotions". He also criticizes the phenomenology of religion which tries to reducu to "unformed and ineffable feellings" intellectual phenomena which are only apperently different from those of our logic. The supposed oppsition between logical thought and mythical thought reveals only our own ignorance: we know how to read a treatise of philolophy but we do not know how myths should be read. Certainly, we have a key, the words of which they are made up , but their meaning escapes us because language on myths occupies a place similar to the place the phonemic system occupies within language itself. Leyi - Strauss begins his argument with this idea: the plurality of myths, in alll times and all place, is no less notable than the repetition of certain processes in all mythic accounts. The same thing occurs in the universe of language: the plurality of texts is a result of the combination of a very small number of fixed linguistic elements. Likewise, mythical elaboration does not obey laws different from linguistic laws: selection and combination of verbal sighns. The distinction between language and speaking, proposed by F. de Saussure,is also applicable to myths. The former is synchronic and assumes a reversible time; the latter is diachronic and its time is irreversible. Myth is speech, its time refers to what happened and it is an unrepeatable utterance; at the same time, it is language a structure which is actualized each time we tell the story again.
The comparison between myth and language lead Lévi - Strauss to search out the constituant elements of the former. Those elements connot be phonemes, morphemes, or "semantemes" for if they were, myth would be a language like other ones. The constituent units of myth are phrases or minimal sentences which, because of their position in the context, describe an important relationship between the different aspects, incidents, and characters of the tale. Lévi - Strauss suggests that wo call these units mythemes.
(Cf. OCTAVIC PAZ Claude Lévi - Strauss)
SELECTION 13
We many illustrate the development and the sequence of thesciences tin the accompanying diagram. In the center of the circle is man, aurrounded by events which influence is behavior in varying degrees, some intimate, some remote. From this point of viex, the advance of science has been more in the nature of expansion of scope than of growthor development. The cosmos lies everywhere about man. Science, a particular way of a dealing with experience, appeared first in interpretations of a particular portion of our field of experience, namely, in astronomy, where phenomena are most remote and insignificant as determinants of human behavior. As science advances and expands, the anthropmorphic philosophy of animism recedes and contracts; as the concepts of natural law and determinism gain groud, the philosophy of free will retreats. The logical conclusion is, of course,to have the whole field of human experience embraced by the philosophy of science rather than that of animism . It is interesting, in this connection, to recall the words of the eminents Polish sociologist, Ludwig Gumplowicz, written many years ago.
Modern natural science has successjully demonstrated that even the "human mind" is suject to physical laws.. But in the domain of social phenomena unchangeable natural laws have not been completely demonstrated. Between mental phenomena subject to the laws of matter and social world strode the conception of human freedom dustract and confuse. It seemed to order and control social relations accroding to its own choice. In the domain of mental phenomene, monistic natural science has in part demoustrated the uncodutioned sway of natural laws. Dualism, driven from his domain , has retired to the domain of social phenomena, whence it must be dislodged.
We find the same view expressed by the great French social scientist, Emile Durkheim, in the Rules of Sociological Method.
Since the law of causality has been verified in the other realms of nature, and since it has progressively extended its authority from the physicochemical world to the biological and from the latter to the psychological, we are justified in claiming that it is equally true of the social world and it is possible to add today that the researches under taken on the basis of this postulate tend to confirm it. There was a time when sentiments ralating to the things of the physical world opposed with equal energy the establisment of the physical sciences, because they , too, hada religious or moral character. We believe, therefore, that this prejudice, pursued from one science to the next, will finally disappear also from its last retreat, sociology, leaving a free field for the true scientific endeavor.
