phraseology, so it certainly has similar and different conceptions of language. Also, idioms
usually describe metaphorical meaning in aspects of linguistic action. For instance, (1)
“She
has
a heart of stone” in English implies “She has a pitiless and unfeeling nature.” But in
Vietnamese there is a bit difference
“Nó có trái tim sắt đá.” means “She has a heart of iron
and stone.” (2) In English “Bury the hatchet” implies “weapons were to be buried or
otherwise cached in time of peace”, but it is expressed in different way by Vietnamese “rửa
tay gác kiếm” (wash hand out of the matter or refuse to have anything more to do with the
matter). To create a picture of contrastive analysis, the author investigates idioms using body
parts
namely “head”, “face”, “heart”, and “hand” in English and Vietnamese from books and
corpus linguistics, then the author will analyze similarities and differences of meaning via
metaphoric expressions in both languages. The results of this paper hope to help learners who
aim at studying idiomatic expressions get perfect perception and translation.
