Introduction
The concept of metaphor appears in both English and Vietnamese. The Oxford Advance
Learner’s Dictionary (925) defined metaphor as “a word or phrase used to describe somebody
or something else, in a way that is different from its normal use, in order to show that two
things have the same qualities and to make the description more powerf
ul”. The Vietnamese
linguist Cù
Đình Tú stated that “ it is the phenomena in which one thing is represented by
another due to their characteristics similarities or the logical connection between two things”,
(1983:270).
Because languages reflect human’s social – historic - cultural life, it is not difficult to
see idiomatic expressions using human body parts to indicate a metaphoric meaning in any
language. However, every language has its own systems and belief in the metalinguistic
