Three Dimensional Analyses
Although, a plane strain analysis provided reasonable results, the actual effect
of the finite dimensions of monolith was not observed. Accordingly, it was necessary
to carry out a three-dimensional analysis. Figure 11 shows the three dimension finite
element mesh for conventional model. In order to reduce the model size, symmetry
was used for modeling of the dam for thermal and structure analyses. Therefore, half
of 60 m of block length was used in the analysis. A Solid70 element type was used for
the thermal analysis. This element has 8 nodes with a single degree of freedom
temperature at each node; A Solid65 element type was used for the structural analysis.
This element has three degrees of freedom at each node, permitting movements in the
x, y and z directions. Same procedure used in the 2D is also used for the 3D to
generate the mesh. The total number of elements is 9552 and 23234 including
foundation elements for conventional and actual models, respectively. Gravity loads
due to self-weight of the rock foundation, RCC gravity load, and thermal load
deduced from thermal analysis were all included in the structural analysis.
