Abstract
In this article, thermal and structural analyses are carried out using both two and
three-dimensional finite element method (FEM). These analyses considered the actual
thermal properties, actual climatic condition, and the actual placement schedule of
RCC layers. Linear and nonlinear stress-strain analyses are considered in the
structural analysis. The computer program ANSYS is used to simulate the
construction process for the Mujib RCC dam. The numerically computed temperature
obtained from ANSYS is compared with the actual temperature measured in the field
using Distributed Fiber Optic Temperature Measurement (DFOT) and thermocouples
installed within the body of the dam. The study demonstrated that the two
dimensional FE analyses is adequate to predict the temperature distribution in the dam
body, whereas the three dimensional model with nonlinear RCC properties showed
better results for stresses that are produced in the dam body.
