Attending Church Vietnamese Transcript: Em: Thì lúc ở Việt Nam á thì anh đi nhà thờ (làm) sao? Người ta đi nhà thờ người ta mặc đồ gì? Anh: Ở Việt Nam người ta mặc đồ đàng hoàng, bỏ áo trong thùng. Còn ở đây á thì mặc đồ tự do. Em: Giống như... uhm... phụ nữ, đàn bà con gái thì người ta mặc đồ làm sao? Anh: Mặc áo dài. Em: Mặc áo dài là bắt buộc hay là tự, tự người ta mặc? Anh: Tự người ta mặc. Em: Nhưng mà hầu như là ai cũng mặc áo dài hết? Anh: Ai cũng mặc áo dài. Con gái mặc áo dài, con trai mặc áo sơ mi trắng, quần tây, đeo cà... cà... cà-li-vát.1 Chị: Cà-ra-vát. Ca-ra-vát! Em: Như mục sư giảng này nọ thì [làm] sao rồi sinh hoạt hát ca trong nhà thờ như thế nào? Anh: Nếu mà ca... ca nhạc á, thì hổng có được đem những cái dụng cụ như cái trống á, trống, đàn ghi-ta đồ đó vô trong nhà thờ. Em: Vậy chứ trong nhà thờ thì người ta xài cái gì ở Việt Nam? Anh: Thì ở Việt Nam họ nghiêm vậy đó, họ chỉ dùng cây đờn2 pi-a-nô, đờn... vậy thôi. Em: Dạ. Rồi... ca nhạc thì thường là có cái ban thánh ca ca hay là... hay là người... ai muốn ca sao thì ca hay là mọi người đều ca chung vậy anh? Anh: Ở Việt Nam á, ca nhạc á, là thường sáng chủ nhật á người ta ca một cái bài thánh ca nào đó thôi, chung hết, giở thánh ca... có thánh ca đem theo, kinh thánh phải đem theo. “And”... khi mà ca đó là tự lấy cuốn thánh ca ra ca, mỗi người có cuốn thánh ca riêng hết,... Em: Dạ. Chứ không phải để sẵn như ở đây? Anh: Uhm... ở đây thì mình có sẵn hết, kinh thánh hổng cần, ông mục sư ổng có... cũng để lên cái máy rồi. English Translation Younger cousin (Yc): So when you were in Vietnam, how did you go to church? When going to church, what kind of clothes did people wear? Older male cousin (Oc): In Vietnam, people dress formally, shirts tucked into pants. Here,3 people wear whatever they want. Yc: Like… uhm… women, ladies in general, how do they dress? Oc: [They] wear áo dài4. Yc: Is wearing áo dài compulsory, or do people wear it voluntarily? Oc: They voluntarily wear it. Yc: But almost everyone wears it? Oc: Everyone wears áo dài. Girls wear áo dài, guys wear white shirts, dress pants, [and they] wear cr… cr… cravat [tie]. Older female cousin: Cravat. Cravat! Yc: Like how do pastors preach, then how are the singing activities in the church? Oc: If… for singing, they are not allowed to bring instruments like drum, guitar, and such into the church. Yc: So what do churches in Vietnam use? Oc: In Vietnam they are just strict like that, they only use piano… that’s it. Yc: Yes. How about... singing songs – is there often a choir, or… or people… whoever wants to sing will sing, or everybody sings together? Oc: In Vietnam, singing songs – often on Sundays people will sing a particular hymn, everybody together, open the hymnal… [People] bring their own hymnals; [they] also have to bring [their own] Bibles. And… when singing, [they] have to get their hymnals out; everybody has to have their own,… Yc: Yes. They are not provided [by the church] like they are here? Oc: Uhm… here we have them ready, there is no need to bring [your own] Bible. The pastor, he also… has [it] already put up on a machine [the projector].
