Caring for Babies

English Translation:
Interviewee: When a baby has just been born, Vietnamese people care very much about … uhm … taking good care and nurturing the baby right from the start. For example … in my family, when there is a newborn baby, my grandmother always says that the baby should drink honey to avoid stomach diseases later on. And … when a baby is born, the family wraps a lot of cloths around the baby to protect them from the cold, the wind, and other outer factors, and the mother has to abstain from many things and eat a lot of nutritious food to produce good breast milk for the baby. And the baby … The family makes sure that the mother rest so that she can stay healthy to breastfeed the baby for a long time, at least a year, so the baby can stay healthy, and develop well.
Interviewer: So Vietnamese people believe that breast milk is the best so they always try their best to … let their babies have breast milk for the longest time possible?
Interviewee: That’s true, and … uhm … the family will feed the mother a lot of traditional food so she produces good breast milk. For example, pork leg noodle … or chicken stew, or duck stew, so the mother can stay healthy and produce good milk for the baby.
Interviewer: What is interesting about … uhm … preparing clothes for the baby?
Interviewee: In Vietnam, before the baby is born, the family will … go to … ask for used clothes from babies … babies whose families they know have children that have grown up healthily. And they believe that if the newborn baby wears the clothes of healthy babies … previously born, their baby will enjoy good health and develop well. And … the baby … uhm … when they have just been brought home from the hospital, the family will wear a lucky charm or a silver necklace or anklet to ward off the wind and diseases, and also to bring about good luck.
Interviewer: In Vietnam, apart from the mother, who are the ones who most frequently take care of the baby?
Interviewee: Normally, apart from the mother … uhm … in the family, paternal or maternal grandmothers are the ones most frequently taking care of the baby because … uhm … Vietnamese family members live very close to each other and love, care, protect each other. So … uhm … when a baby is born, it becomes the joy of the whole family, and paternal or maternal grandmothers are willing to give up their work … to stay at their daughters’ or sons’ home to take care of the baby. They even stay at [their daughter’s] home … for months to take care of the baby until they grow up.
Interviewer: Uhm … even when daughters or sons live very far away … mothers still go there … I mean, mothers still travel long distances to take care of their grandchildren … Is that true?
Interviewee: Yes … that’s true.
