Studying Abroad

English Translation:
Interviewer: Firstly may I ask that as you were in Vietnam, how did you know about U.S. colleges, how did you know about the U.S. education and decide to go to colleges in the U.S.?
Interviewee: I knew about the U.S. education mostly through the internet, and also through some groups of Vietnamese students abroad, who have been to the U.S. or foreign countries to study and come back afterward and organize talks with the younger generations in Vietnam, and thanks to those I got to know about the American education and also decided to go to the U.S. for college.
Interviewer: Which was the most important factor that made you decide to study in the U.S.?
Interviewee: The most important factor for studying in the U.S. is probably because I think the education in the U.S. has more advantages than the education in Vietnam and also gives me more freedom to choose my own path where I can self develop.
Interviewer: Ah, so what major are you studying in the U.S.?
Interviewee: Now I’m majoring in Math in the U.S.
Interviewer: So provided if you weren’t studying in the U.S. but in Vietnam, do you think you would still follow this path? Would you still study Math or would you study something else?
Interviewee: If I were in Vietnam, I think it’s very likely that I would take something that would be more practical, such as engineering.
Interviewer: Why do you study Math in the U.S. but think that in Vietnam you would study engineering but not Math?
Interviewee: Part of it is probably because the field of Mathematics in Vietnam is not as developed as it is in the U.S., and it isn’t invested and given as many opportunities to research and develop as it is in the U.S. either, and most of students in Vietnam study pretty practical fields such as doctors or engineers, because with those fields there are more opportunities to find jobs after graduation.
Interviewer: So do you think that the trend of studying abroad among Vietnamese students is popular, or are there just some who live in the cities or study well in school or have money can go, or is it quite popular in Vietnam nowadays?
Interviewee: Hmm… In Vietnam nowadays, studying abroad is probably much more popular compared to five or ten years ago, but of course it’s very competitive to get to study abroad, because the number of Vietnamese students who want to study abroad is high, yet the number of schools in the U.S. or foreign countries that can accept Vietnamese students is quite limited.
Interviewer: So besides the U.S., what are the destinations that are usually very popular for Vietnamese students to choose to study abroad?
Interviewee: Some other places that seem to be popular can be… there are students who often go to the U.K. or France; another big group often goes to some countries nearby Vietnam, such as Singapore or Thailand.
