Khóc Hòa thượng Triệu Châu
Thầy lìa Tư Thủy651 động vương hầu,
Besides the clothes on my back, what covers are needed?
Head monk Liu, ascetic Chang,
Talking of goodness with their lips, how wonderful!
No matter if my empty bag652 is emptied out,
If you ask about it, you’d never understand all the reasons for it.
Midnight. Twelfth hour of the day653.
This feeling654, how can it cease even for a moment?
Thinking of the people in the world who have left home,
It seems like I’ve been a temple priest for a long time now.
A dirt bed, a torn reed mat,
An old elm-block pillow without any padding.
To the Holy Image655 not offering any Arabian incense.
In ashes hearing only the shitting of the ox.
Verse for the master’s portrait made by
the King of Chao-chou (Joshu).
The moon of the Blue Gorge.
The face in a clear mirror.
My master, my teacher,
The realm of Chao-chou.
Two eulogies of priest Chao-chou (Joshu)
The master leaves the waters of the Chai (Shi)656 and kings and princes are moved.
Tâm ấn sáng ngầm phất tử thâu.
Trời rộng sương mờ trăng tùng đỉnh,
Biển to sóng úp chiếc thuyền phao.
Một đèn chợt tắt Ba-tuần657 thích,
Ðôi mắt lại mờ bạn đạo sầu.
Nếu ai thấu triệt đám mây mù658,
Hễ thấy ghế bình659 lệ cũng trào!
Phật nhật về Tây, Tổ ấn suy,
Châu chìm ao thắm, nguyệt chìm soi.
Bóng trùm trượng thất660 khói hương thảm,
Gió dậy thiền đường tùng reo than.
Chiếc dép chợt hiện lưu dấu hóa,
Ngũ thiên661 đâu chỗ gặp về ôi!
Hiểu KHÔNG đệ tử vui buồn dứt,
Trước màu trắng662 tự vẫn sụt sùi!
The light of his mind seal lies hid in the confines of the yak tail.
The mists of the blue sky obscure the moonlight of pine peak,
In the deep dark waves, the boat of men’s salvation capsizes.
A candle is suddenly extinguished and the Papiyans663 rejoice,
With both eyes seriously dimmed, friends of the Way are saddened.
No matter if someone has passed completely through the clouds664,
Whenever he sees the jug or the loom665, tears will flow.
The sun of Buddha inclines toward the west, the seal of the Patriarchs breaks,
A pearl sinks into crimson mud, the moon loses its shine.
Shadows spread over the small room666 and the fireplace weeps,
Breeze stir in the meditation hall and the pines softly moan.
The one sandal suddenly came and its traces are left behind,
In the five heavens667, where can he be met again? Disciples who have understood emptiness, transcend joy and sorrow.
Yet with flowing tears they face the snowy drapes668.
