Problem questions

  1. Dwell on and discuss why translator can’t express his\her own opinion in translation

  2. Express your point of view concerning the following quote “Quality of translation could depend on speakers speech impediment”

It is clear, that the translator is a human being and he may not know or understand something, at the same time the interpreter working in an atmosphere of time pressure does not have the opportunity to look up for a word in the dictionary, look through the book of reference, etc., But then, and this is an important rule of professional ethics, the translator is obliged to signal his lack of competence and facts of misunderstanding of the source text, not to hide them. Just in these cases the translator has the right to declare himself, ask clarifying questions, asked to repeat, to explain, if he did not hear something, did not remember something, did not know the terms. If he has to translate text on knowing in advance topics for example scientific conference, business negotiations etc., he must draw up his own working vocabulary and consult with specialists.

Most of the already mentioned moral and ethical principles are relevant for translation, but since its product is a written text, the rules of content rendering and the rules of written text layout also belong to the ethical standards:
- the translator must transmit the entire text composition, that is all text units in the original language: title, authors titles, footnotes, captions, etc.,
- words and text fragments in languages other than the original, for example in the English text there are fragments of Latin, Greek and French are transferred to the text of the translation without change;
- graphic highlighting tools for example italics or underlining must be either reproduced or replaced with equivalent ones;
- abbreviations should be decoded as far as possible and given in the text of the translation in its original full and abbreviated form in the language of translation, for example UN - Организация объединённых наций (ООН)
- at the end of translation the translator is obliged to check the completeness of text composition. Since information emissions occur even with most experienced translators.
