Các hydride nền là các alkan và các mancude có tên thông thường hoặc tên hệ thống, và những nhóm là dẫn xuất của chúng thì được biểu thị bằng các tiền tố không phân cách. Vì chúng đã chứa các nhóm đặc trưng được ưu tiên viết dưới dạng hậu tố, chúng chỉ có thể được tiếp tục biến thành nhóm chức thông qua các nhóm đặc trưng ít được ưu tiên hơn dưới dạng tiền tố. Số lượng những hydride nền chức như vậy không nhiều; dưới đây là liệt kê một số được coi là quan trọng trong hệ thống danh pháp.

Các radical và ion được hình thành bằng cách trừ hay cộng các nguyên tử hydro, hydron hoặc hydride. Tên của chúng được hình thành bằng cách dùng các hậu tố và tiền tố.

VÍ DỤ:

Radical: Mất một H^  hậu tố -yl.

Mất hai H^  hậu tố -yliden hoặc -diyl

(CH₃^ là methyl, CH₂: là methyliden, ^CH₂-CH₂^ là ethan-1,2-diyl ...)

Anion: Mất một H⁺  hậu tố -ide.

Cation Mất một H^-  hậu tố -yli (CH₃⁺ là methyli).

Thêm một H⁺  hậu tố -I (CH₅⁺ là methi).

Trước đây gọi là tên gốc chức - radicofunctional names. Danh pháp loại chức là hệ lưỡng nguyên đã được sử dụng cho hóa vô cơ. Trong khi tên thay thế chỉ có một từ thì tên lưỡng nguyên gồm hai từ.

VÍ DỤ:

CIOC-[CH₂]₂-COOH acid 4-chloro-4-oxobutanoic

Danh pháp các hợp chất cơ-nguyên tố là sự pha lẫn giữa danh pháp vô cơ và danh pháp hữu cơ. Lấy ví dụ, hợp chất [Sn(C₂H₅)₄]. Đây là một cấu trúc phối trí, vì vậy, theo danh pháp phối trí, cũng như theo danh pháp hữu cơ, nó có tên là tetraethylstanum (tên IUPAC là tetraethyltin). Tuy nhiên, nếu coi hydride của thiếc, SnH₄, tương tự hợp chất của carbon là CH₄, thì bằng phương pháp thay thế ta có tên gọi của [Sn(C₂H₅)₄] là tetraethylstanan. Như vậy, các hợp chất cơ-nguyên tố có thể được gọi tên bằng thao tác cộng hoặc thay thế.

Phương pháp cộng có thể được áp dụng cho tất cả các hợp chất cơ-nguyên tố, còn phương pháp thay thế chủ yếu được áp dụng hạn chế để gọi tên các dẫn xuất của các kim loại (nhóm 14, 15, 16 và nguyên tố B.

4.3.9. Tên của các dẫn xuất thế (substituted derivatives)

Các cấu trúc thế đươc coi như trao đổi với các nguyên tử hydro(gen) cho nên được gọi tên bằng cách dùng các tiền tố của các tên nhóm tương thích và, trong trường hợp có nhiều hơn một nhóm, được viết theo trật tự ABC trước tên của hydride nền, đồng thời dùng các ngoặc đơn và các chỉ số độ bội nếu cần thiết.
