Abstract: The quantitative assessment of the alluvial plain occurrences in the coastal area of Ba Lat estuary
from 1965 to 2015 using Remote Sensing Technology and Geographic Information System (GIS) showed
that it is one of the coastal areas that has the highest development speed in the Red River Delta. The
development of the alluvial plain on the right side of Ba Lat estuary (Giao
Thuy district - Nam Dinh
province) is faster than the average speed of alluvial cross deposition during this period at about 50-55 m
per year, corresponding to about 48.6 ha per year. The alluvial plain area on the left side of Ba Lat estuary
(Tien Hai district - Thai Binh province), besides a relatively strong deposition,
has encountered several
minor local erosion points with the average cross deposition speed of about 30-35 m per year,
corresponding to 22.2 ha per year. The data revealed a quantitative estimation
of the deposition-erosion
process in terms of speed and area, particularly for the region which is difficult
to examine like Ba Lat
estuary.
