MARINE BIODIVERSITY IN VIET NAM: STATUS, CHALLENGES
AND MANAGEMENT
ISSUES
Abstract
Viet Nam is a marine country associated with 3,260 km of coastal line. The country is also
considered as a high biodiversity area in the world with the 9 forms of typical ecosystems
and 12,000 marine species which produced about 4‐ 5 millions tone of marine products
annually. It is the reserve production for the near future.
Although The Vietnamese
Government has strong policy to protect the biodiversity of the marine resources but its
degradation is very obviously. It is estimated that in the future, a hundred of species will
be absent from List of marine species in Viet Nam. The wonderful coral reefs might be
absent, fishermen might have nothing to do and the sea
of Viet Nam might become
deserted. These are the challenges provided for not only the ecological environment, but
also for the daily life of Vietnamese itself. For our future, for the survival and existence of
our future generations, we shall consider to protect the biodiversity as the urgent tasks; it
is needed to have actions to protect marine biodiversity immediately. Therefore wise
utilization and protection of marine resources are critical importance in the short term as
well as in the long run. Thanks for the awareness raising of the issues, we have made a
great efforts in studying of biodiversity and propose policy
measures for sustainable
management of the marine resources. The findings presented in this report, are the
outcomes of several study projects and programs, which conducted under collaboration
among, Institute of Natural Resources
and the Marine Environment, the Research
Institute of Marine Fisheries; and the Institute of Oceanography, Nha Trang.
