Phân tích cách sử dụng ngữ điệu xuống và lên trong một số đoạn phỏng vấn trích từ The Ellen Show

How to speak English with the appropriate intonation? How to teach and learn English intonation effectively and properly? etc. They are always big questions under restless mind of English teachers and learners not only in Viet Nam but also in the English-speaking words. There has been existing a traditional so-called correlation between intonation tunes and sentence types such as Declarative, Interrogative and Imperative Sentences in the practice of English teaching. The current paper presents another effort to verify this myth by analyzing the use of tunes and the sentence types in the conversations selected from the most popular Television talk show in American- the Ellen Show. By closely examining the bulk of 872 intonation units, this study point out the dominance of falling tunes in real-life conversations. More importantly, the research results supports the correlation between certain sentence types and some specific tunes while underlines the inconsistence in the use of falling and rising tunes and other sentence types under different circumstances.

This study is an investigation into American culture of the Frontier time through the series The Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This series, often known as The Little House series, is based on decades-old memories of Laura Ingalls Wilder's childhood in the Midwest region of the United States during the late 19th century. The study focuses on two socio-cultural issues namely Frontier time’s spirit and the racism against Native Americans. This study is a case study on American culture at Frontier time through a literature work; however it still wishes to recommend that using literature is a good teaching method to help students approach American culture and history.

Đánh giá giáo trình tiếng Anh Thương mại “English for Economics and Business” dành cho sinh viên Khoa Kinh tế và Quản trị doanh nghiệp trường ĐH Mỏ-Địa chất Hà Nội

The study was accomplished by evaluating English for Business Purposes (EBP) material “English in Economics and Business” for Economics and Business Management Students in Hanoi University of Mining and Geology. It was conducted with the participation of 130 students from 3 Majors and 4 teachers at Faculty of Economics and Business Management. The result showed that the book lacked the relevance of the contents and the aims of the curriculum, participants and appropriate activities. Moreover, it lacks a manual with answer key and teaching instructions or CD. However, teachers agree that this material is good enough for students to work on their own and it provides the best way to teach ESP at HUMG’s context. Taking everything into account, “English in Economics and Business” should be replaced or adopted to suit the ESP teaching and learning fact at Hanoi University of Mining and Geology.

Những chiến lược trước khi viết cho sinh viên Trung tâm Đào tạo và Hợp tác Quốc tế, trường ĐH Điện lực

It goes without saying that a good beginning is half the battle. Accordingly, pre-writing strategies are considered an essential tool for students, especially third-year students at Electric Power University who have not been familiar with academic writing. In order to carry out this research project, 50 students were involved in this study to bring various and critical viewpoints about the main aspect of pre-writing skill illustrated by the term “strategies”. Using two research methods including quantitative and qualitative and two instruments including questionnaire and semi-structures interview, the study attempts to answer to the question: “What strategies are used by students at the Center for International Cooperation and Training, Electric Power University, at the pre-writing stage?” The results shared that the strategies students at Center for International Cooperation and Training, Electric Power University use at the pre-writing stage include brainstorming, outlining, talking it out, categorizing and clustering. Meanwhile, they rarely or never use journaling, questions-asking, branching and free-writing. It is also found that they are not really aware of the importance of these pre-writing strategies. This explains partly why their writing is of poor quality. The study’s results suggested that teachers should be more flexible to convert such useful strategies into activities in class to make sure students can understand prewriting strategies and apply them to writing skill effectively.

Động lực học tiếng Anh của học sinh tiểu học: nghiên cứu cụ thể tại trường tiểu học Nhân Phúc

The research in this minor thesis is carried out to investigate students’ motivation at Nhan Phuc Primary School. By employing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews as research data collection, the study found out that the young learners at Nhan Phuc Primary School have tendency towards intrinsic motivation in learning English. Also, the researcher explored three main factors affecting the sudents’ motivation, namely students’ self interest, caregivers’ encouragement and anxiety. In this study, motivational strategies also were discussed.

In short, it is hoped that this thesis will help to improve the teaching and studying of English at Nhan Phuc Primary School as well as pave the way for future studies in the field of young students’ motivation in English learning.

Nâng cao kỹ năng đọc hiểu cho học sinh lớp 11 tại một trường THPT ở Nam Định thông qua các bài tập trọng điểm

In many second or foreign language teaching situations, reading receives a special focus. In process of teaching and learning English as a foreign language, reading has always been offered a great deal of attention both from the teachers and the students. Reading is not only considered as a means to gain knowledge but also a means by which further study takes place. This study is concerned with improving students’ reading comprehension skills through focused tasks.

The benefits of using focused tasks in reading lessons are affirmed again in this thesis through the studies and the author carried out at Ngo Quyen High School, Nam Dinh province. These benefits bring considerable effectiveness to teachers and students in teaching and learning reading. This is also the main aim of the study and the author’s wish.



In order to achieve this aim and wish, the author enters into consideration of the relevant literature and then carries out observing classes, giving questionnaires to them, etc. to have necessary findings and analysis. At the same time, the author also suggests the suitable focused tasks to apply in teaching and learning reading lessons in Tieng Anh 11.

Kích hoạt kiến thúc nền để nâng cao kỹ năng nghe cho học sinh trung học phổ thông

This minor thesis aims at find out the role of activating prior knowledge in improving listening skill to students at high school. Firstly, the researcher briefly reviewed some literature concerning this issue. Then data was collected from two instruments, namely questionnaires for both students and teachers, and class observations. Nine teachers and 221 students in grade 10 and 11 were sampled. The Microsoft Excel was undertaken to analyze the data. The final results indicated that the teachers and students had inadequate knowledge about the role of activating prior knowledge in listening lesson. The study also showed students’ difficulties that they encounter when lack of prior knowledge in listening. Lastly, the study offered some implications for activating students’ prior knowledge in teaching and learning listening skill. It consists of three parts: the introduction, the development and the conclusion.

Luyện một số thủ thuật đọc hiểu quả cho học sinh chuyên tiếng Anh lớp 11, trường THPT Bình Xuyên, Vĩnh Phúc

Reading is one of the most important for students at high school. However, students at Binh Xuyen high school had difficulties. As a teacher of English, the author recognized that their results of reading in graduation and university entrance exams were not high at Binh Xuyen high school and frequently complained by other teachers. The students felt bored and afraid to cope with reading lessons. With the desire to improve students’ reading skill, the author carried out an experimental research on the training of reading strategies at Binh Xuyen high school, Vinh Phuc province. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of the training the strategies, give findings and implications in learning and teaching reading as well as suggestions to further studies.
