II. LITERATURE REVIEW

A. Information System

Laudon and Laudon [4] defined the information system as a set of components that were interconnected, collect (or obtain), process, store and distribute the information to support decision making and supervision in an organization. In addition to support the process of decision-making, coordination and supervision, information systems can also help managers and employees to analyze problems, describe complicated things, and create new products. The information system contained information about people, places, and important things in the organization or in the surroundings. Information itself meant data that has been formed into meaningful and useful thing for humans. Instead, the data was a set of raw facts representing events occurring in the organizations or the physical environment of the company. Data was usually not managed and organized into a form that can be effectively understood by humans. Ward and Peppard [5] explained that concept of the existing information systems in every organization has appeared before the development of information technology. Information Technology, were especially related to hardware, software, and telecommunications networks. While the information system was defined as a person or organization using technology to collect, process, store, use, and disseminate the information. Today the information system has been fully automated with information technology, so that the use of terms of information systems and information technology were often used together or used interchangeably to describe the same purpose.

B. Enterprise Resource Planning

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is an information system based on the information technology infrastructure that facilitate the flow of information within an organizations or companies. ERP systems integrated all the information and processes of an organization into a unified database. An ERP system integrated components of different information through technical integration of software, hardware and business processes. According to O'Brien and Maracas, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system was cross-functional in companies that integrate and automate internal business processes such as logistics functions, finance, human resources and marketing [6]. Therefore, the ERP application software were usually divided into modules of operations, finance, and human resources. According to O'Brien and Maracas, there were at least four benefits of implementing ERP [6]:

  1. Quality and Efficiency. ERP created a framework to integrate and improve the efficiency of internal business processes producing better service to customers.

  2. Decreased Costs. Integration of information systems has impact on reducing costs significantly in transaction processing, hardware, software, and personnel expenses supporting the information systems.

  3. Decision Support. ERP provided cross-functional information for management, thus improving the decision making abilities.

  4. Enterprise Agility. ERP improved the company performance become more agile and nimble as ERP helped to break hitch (silos) of business processes and information among departments.
