  1. Introduction

“Sir” is a formal title used for calling a British man with outstanding personal achievement in his professional area. On the field of football, the title belonged to an exceptional man, Sir Alex Ferguson. During his major contribution, Sir William Golding also held this rank in terms of literature. Not only did William Golding hold a distinguished title, but he also received the most prestigious award, the Nobel Prize in Literature (1983). One of the most well-known novels written by William is Lord of the Flies, which was published in 1954. The novel explores the dark side of human nature as the teenage boys survive on a deserted island after the plane carrying them was hit by bullets during the nuclear war. Lord of the Flies is filled with symbolism and establishes a foundation for Golding's later writings, which further explore the conflict within humans between good and evil. For instance, his belief that “man produces evil as a bee produces honey” is also shown in his other novels namely Free Fall (1959) and The Spire (1964) (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2023). When mentioning Lord of the Flies, there is no doubt the factor that contributed to this novel's success is the central character, Ralph. In his character portrayal, he conveyed a message about human nature. In general, everyone has their evil side, but at the end of the day, the decision of whether to be a good person or a bad person depends on the individual. This essay will analyze Ralph and his characteristics.
