Ralph’s commitment to civilization and morality:

In Lord of the Flies, Ralph is not demonstrated solely as a vicious and cruel character, but rather as a leader with a commitment to morality and civilization amidst the chaos and savagery.
One of the methods by which Ralph's commitment to kindness is demonstrated is through his charismatic appearance. As the novel begins, Ralph is described as an “attractive” twelve-year-old boy with “fair hair” (p.6) and a sense of natural charisma. His charisma appeals both physically and intellectually, he resembles a typical example of innocence and benevolence that anyone can trust. Besides, Ralph’s face also shows a mild kindness that would comfort anyone “ no devil” (p.11). In comparison with the attractiveness of Ralph, Jack is described as tall, thin, “ugly without silliness” (p.25), and his body “hidden by a black cloak” (p.24). These details foreshadow his authoritarian attitude towards the leadership.
Ralph’s morals also lie behind the reason why he has separated himself from Jack’s savage group and his everlasting hope of rescue. As witnessing the boys becoming wild and primitive, Ralph is gradually aware of his shabby appearance “the frayed edges of his shorts were making an uncomfortable, pink area on the front of his thighs” and he even notices the “dirt and decay” (p.108). On the other hand, Jack’s group has quickly adapted to the wildlife on the island. They are absorbed in having fun, hunting, painting their faces like barbarians, and do not care about being rescued. Ralph always thinks about returning to civilization, his mind often dreams about the life back home where he has adults decide things for him: “At home there was always a grown-up. Please, sir, please, miss; and then you got an answer” (p.133). Therefore, he strives to maintain the light of the fire, as for the existence of rescue’s hope. For example, Ralph says “The fire is the most important thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we don't keep a fire going?” and he even emphasizes “the smoke is more important than the pig” (p.114). Even after Piggy's death and Ralph is hunted like an animal, he still finds his way back to Jack's tribe for the fire - his one and only hope.
Furthermore, his attachment to regularity is portrayed through his role as a leader, his position carries the responsibility of establishing order and guiding the boys towards a sense of normality (Li & Wuand, 2009). He takes the initiative to command the boys to build shelters, light the signal fire, and look for food, which proclaims his decisiveness and fair mind. To illustrate, William Golding depicts Ralph mainly with very short and direct dialogues, as for dominance over his inferior, “We must make a fire … We’ll build a pile … More wood! All of you get more wood!” (p.51-56). Ralph values orders and regulations as if without these, the civilized world and a sense of stability would collapse in the blink of an eye (Alguzo, 2020). He then introduces the conch shell as a symbol of authority and upholds the rule that whoever holds it has the right to speak during assemblies. This democratic approach ensures that every boy's voice is heard and encourages a sense of equality among them. By emphasizing the necessity of rules and establishing a democratic system, Ralph displays his commitment to a civilized framework. Moreover, Ralph consistently demonstrates a concern for the well-being of the younger boys on the island. He recognizes their vulnerability and takes on the role of protector. In times of fear and uncertainty, Ralph provides comfort and reassurance, offering a sense of security amidst the chaos. He actively listens to their fears and incorporates their opinions into decision-making processes, treating the younger boys as equals despite their age. By including them and ensuring their physical and emotional needs are met, Ralph exemplifies his commitment to empathy and compassion, crucial components of a civilized society.
