Improve accuracy of transmission in aircraft guns

Abstract

The article mentions good points of Harmonic decelerating gearbox and result of empirical research on azimuth and elevation transmission of 14.5 mm double barreled gun.

I. Introduction

Currently, manual gear transmission is widely used in transmission mechanism, decelerating gearbox, conveyor belt…

It can be applied in mechanism absent of high accuracy, but only Harmonic decelerating gearbox can adapt to ones need high accuracy such as: welding machine handle, cutter tool-head for 2-3D processing of CNC machine, azimuth and elevation transmission of modern aircraft guns, robots… due to some strict requirements in operation.

Harmonic decelerating gearbox reveals several preeminent points including:



  • High ratio transmission

  • Zero backlash

  • High accuracy (error of about 1miliradial)

  • Easy installment and integration

  • Light weight and neat shape

  • High torque

  • Smooth transmission, small oscillation

  • High transmission productivity ( high ratio of torque/weight)

Preeminent in operation and design makes Harmonic driver transmission a better choice than original manual decelerating gearbox. It has neat shape, light weight, simple installment, stable and high transmission ratio, low absolute sliding speed… In the modern gear transmission mechanism, the use of rolling rub to replace sliding ones improves productivity of over 90% stably. In addition, there exist of hydrodynamic oil membrane on linkage of mechanic parts with gears and rolls, which also improves load capability. Its dimension is haft size of manual gearbox. Higher number of gears coinciding at the same time improves its load capability, which consequently reduces zero backlash and balance centrifugal force for smooth operation…

II. Experiment

Group of researchers has conducted study, design and manufacture Harmonic gearbox to replace azimuth and elevation transmission of 14.5 mm double barreled aircraft gun. The result reveals good adaptation to requirements such as gun rack function, easy spin, simple control, neat shape, high accuracy in tracking (single or chain shoots).



Surveying by 3-D velocity measurement machine BR4321V of B&K and one-way velocity sensor 8636C50 of KISLER (measuring range: ±50g, 1g=9.81m/s2) shows that with installation of Harmonic decelerating gearbox, the gun rack spins more smoothly and stably, shooting velocity is smaller, oscillating amplitude spectrum is higher (Image 3,4)
