How to end “er/est”

Ending “e”: + r/st. Eg: large – larger/ largest

+ 111 - ? 2 consonants + er/est. Eg: thin – thinner/ thinnest

  1. Double comparatives.

  1. Càng ngày ….. càng:

Short adj/ adv:

Long adj/adv:

Eg: She becomes more and more beautiful.

He speaks English more and more fluently.

Less and less + adj/adv

Eg: My grandfather is less and less strong.

Short adj/ adv:

The + adj/adv – er + S + V …, the adj/adv – er + S + V …

Eg: The richer he gets, the weaker he is.

The darker it gets, the colder it is.



  • If two halves have (it is) we can omit it.

Eg: The more (it it ), the merrier (it is ).

The sooner (it is ), the better (it is ).



Long adj/ adv:


The more adj/ adv + S + V …., the more adj/ adv ….

Eg: The more beautiful she is, the more miserable her husband is.

  1. Logical comparisons

  • Possesion.

Eg: His drawings are as perfect as his instructor. ( Incorrect)

His drawings are as perfect as his instructor’s. ( Correct)



  • That of + singular noun

Eg: The salary of a professor is higher than a secretary. ( Incorrect)

The salary of a professor is higher than that of a secretary. ( Correct)

( that of = the salary of)


  • Those of + plural noun

Eg: The duties of a policeman are more dangerous than a teacher. ( Incorrect)

The duties of a policeman are more dangerous than those of a teacher. ( Correct)

( those of = the duties of)


  1. Others.

  • No sooner ….. than = Vừa mới …. Thì đã….

No sooner + auxilary + S + V + than + S + V

Eg: No sooner had we started out for California than it started to rain. (Past)

No sooner will he arrive than he wants to leave. ( will is used for future)



  • No sooner …. than = Hardly/ Scarely …. when

Eg: Scarely had they felt in love each other when they got married.

  • Note: No longer ….. = not …. any more = không …. nữa.

S + no longer + positive verb

Eg: He no longer studies at the university = He doesn’t study at the university any more.

The + comparative + of the two ( pair/ couple/ twins) + N

Eg: Henry is the smarter of the two boys.

Of the two shirts, this one is the prettier.



  • Comparisons with number multiple.

Eg: Their house is about twice as big as mine.

  • Note: “ To be different from”, “ the same as”, “ like/enjoy …. Best/most”
