ABSTRACT: Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) are so popular in life nowadays because they have a wide range of applications
such as in healthcare, traffic control, military and rescue. However, the real performance of MANETs is still far from our
expectation. Hence, there exists a huge of works considering this problem. As the performance of a MANET is dependent on the
routing algorithm or protocol employed, most works are routing related. In this paper, we study how the performance of a MANET
is governed by a routing protocol. It will be four routing protocols, namely AODV, DSR, OLSR and DSDV, are evolved. We first
design and implement different simulations so that all necessary performance metrics can be observed and measured. Then, we give
comparative analyses on the obtained numerical results. From insight experiments, we may conclude that, for light traffic and low
mobility MANETs, OLSR and DSDV work well. But, for heavy traffic and high mobility MANETs, AODV and DSR are dominant.
Thus, we believe that new routing protocols for MANETs must have the ability to work efficiently in both cases.
