Britain is now a highly industrialized ( in đát tri lai) country and there are only 238,000 (two hundred thirty eight thousand) farms in the UK. More and more farmers leave the land ( len) because they can not earn enough money to survive (sơ vai). Only large (la ch) farms are economic (e kơ no mịc) and because of this most British farm are big. They usually grow cereals ( c ri eo) in the east (ít st) of England and raise sheep and cowsin the north of England and Scotland. The small family farms often have to earn more money by offering bed and breakfast accommodation ( ơ ko mơ đây sừn) to tourists.

Farming methods (me thợt) in Britain have also changed. Fields (phiêu) used to be quite small, divided by hedges (he dợt) which were sometimes a thousand years old and full of wild flowers and birds. Many hedges were pulled (pô đờ) up to allow farmers to use modern machinery ( mơ sin nơ ri). Now most fields (phiêu) in England are large by European (du rơ pi en) standards ( sten đợt).
