Re: The arrest and detention of Mrs. Hong Vo, a Vietnamese-Australian from Victoria, by Vietnamese Authorities in Viet-Nam. Dear Minister, We would like to bring to your attention the latest arrest and subsequent detention of a Vietnamese-Australian Mrs Hong Vo from Melbourne, Victoria on 10th October 2010 in Saigon by the Vietnamese Government. It has been reported that Mrs Hong Vo, an Australian citizen and a member of the Viet Tan (Viet Nam Reform Party – a Vietnamese pro-democracy group with members in Vietnam and abroad) who advocates for social justice and democratic change through open and peaceful political means in VN, took part in a small and peaceful public rally in Ha Noi on 9th October 2010 calling the Vietnamese government to stand up and defend Vietnam’s sovereignty against China’s aggression and invasion of Viet-Nam’s land and sea territories. As an Australian citizen and a concerned for human rights citizen of the world, Mrs. Vo should be entitled to expressed her views publicly anywhere in a non-violent and peaceful way. Our community is concerned for Mrs Vo’s safety and well being since her arrest follows a series of recent arrests and detentions of a number of human rights activists and political dissidents in VN, four of whom were members of the Viet-Tan Party, which we have brought to your attention only a few days ago. We would like to seek your urgent attention to Mrs Vo’s detention and request that every possible consular assistance is given to her to ensure her safety and to secure her release and return to Australia. We are looking forward to receiving an update from your Department on this matter at the earliest opportunity. Thank you for your assistance.
