Chemistry and the issue of food and foodstuff
The role of food and foodstuff in people’s daily life
+ Food and foodstuff are known to provide nutrition and energy for human’s life and activities
+ To maintain living, people will need foodstuff and food in their daily diet with a balance between carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals and micronutrients,...
+ When the body is not provided sufficient energy to work through food, or lacking nutrients will make the body malfunction, leading to dangerous illnesses, particularly children and pregnant women.
Example: Lacking Vitamin will lead to vision loss and blindness.
People who lack Iodide will develop a goiter, or enlargement of the thyroid gland in the neck
The problem of food shortage to human’s life
+ Due to overpopulation and the rising demand of food, a new problem related to food and foodstuff arise: The amount of food and the quality need to be increased.
+ Moreover, lands for agriculture have been cut down for industrialization, global warming and natural disasters made nature harsher and harsher. Those lead to the downgrade of food quantity and quality.
Chemistry help solve food-and-foodstuff-related problem( Food chemistry)
+ Food chemistry helps increase the quality and quantity of food and foodstuff. Research and production of chemicals that help protect and grow plants and animals, for example, fertilizers, pesticides, growth promoters,etc… Using food chemistry, we can make food without killing animals or create food with better quality.
+ Food chemistry helps replace food and foodstuff materials used in the food industry with non-food and non-foodstuff materials.
Example: Replacing starch with carbohydrate compounds to produce alcohol (C2H5OH)
Producing Glucose from sawdust, straws, instead of from sugar canes.
+ Alongside biotechnology, chemistry help develop chemicals that play an important part in making new plants and animals which has better productivity.
Example:We have developed better corn, papaya, potato species that have faster growth while giving better food quality and quantity.
+ Chemistry helps provide different food made for different people with their illnesses.
Example: Food for diabetic people
Food chemistry plays an important parts in the production of food additivies. However, it also leads to the issue of food safety, especially important is the issue of food poisoning.
There usually are many reasons leading to food poisoning, for example:
+ Leftover plant protection substances(herbicides)
+ Heavy metals(Lead) left in soil and water penetrating to into plants, vegetables, water sources…
+ Overuse of food additives
Guiding people to follow food safety procedures is an important part in solving the issue of food and foodstuff
