Stowage
Finished steel products
Cold-rolled steel coil
Steel forged or rolled into
coil and packaged. Weights
of this product vary up to a
maximum of 40 tons.
1
Cold-rolled steel is a
finished product that is
unwound for
immediate use.
Hot and cold rolled steel
coil is a product that is
stowed at the bottom of
the cargo hold with the
‘eye’ pointing in a fore and
aft direction. Rows of steel
coils should be stowed
at least 4 to 6 inches (10
to 15 cm) apart to ensure
the sides of coils are not
damaged during loading,
transit or discharge.
Hot rolled steel coil
Semi-finished steel forged
and rolled into coil. Weights
of this product can vary up
to a maximum
of 40 tons.
Hot-rolled steel is normally
unwound and processed
into cold-rolled steel.

Steel wire rods (coiled)
Long, thin steel rods
produced by either hot
or cold rolling.
Coiled wire rods can
be damaged through
compression, e.g. due
to high stowage or
compression against tank
top and vessel sides or
bulkheads.
Coiled steel wire rods
are normally stowed in
athwartships rows with
the axis fore and aft. Coils
should be stowed upright
so that each coil rests
against an adjacent coil.
The coils in successive tiers
should be stowed so that
each coil overlaps the
coil below.
Steel plate
Elongated, thick flat cold
rolled steel plate generally
of up to 2 inches (5 cm)
in thickness.
Steel plate is of
multipurpose use for a
variety of steel based
products and structures.
Steel plate is usually
stowed with the longer
axis stowed fore and aft
but is sometimes stowed
athwartships when bundled.
Steel/cast iron pipe
(large diameter)
Large diameter steel or cast
iron pipe whereby ends may
be, for example, threaded,
beveled, swaged or flanged.
The ends of large diameter
pipes are prone to damage
(e.g. swaged ends). Pipe
ends may be shipped with
protective coverings or
inserts to prevent handling
damage.
Steel and cast iron pipe
should be stowed fore
and aft. The shipper/
manufacturers should
be consulted as to the
maximum allowable tiers
for stacking large diameter
pipes.
Steel pipe (small diameter)
Finished steel product. Ends
may be beveled, swaged
or flanged and may have
protective covering.
Small diameter pipes in
single unit or bundled in
groups. Ends of pipes are
susceptible to damage.
Small diameter steel pipe is
usually packed in bundles
and should be stowed in a
fore and aft direction.
Steel piling and column
Long, finished cold rolled
molded steel sheet
products.
Primarily used for
construction purposes.
Steel pilings and column are
usually packed in bundles
and should be stowed in a
fore and aft direction.
