Samapatti also means a concentrated state of mind in which the subject is completely identified with the object of meditation. Psychologically, it is a state of consciousness in perfect equillibrium, i.e., tranquillized.

Samatha (skt) Shamatha (p): Meditation—Thiền chỉ quán—Tiếng Phạn Tam Ma Ðịa có nghĩa là trạng thái tâm vắng lặng, là một phương pháp huấn luyện tâm tập trung tư tưởng. Thiền Tam Ma Ðịa liên quan tới việc gom tâm vào một điểm (see Nhất Ðiểm Trụ). Tam Ma Ðịa còn là sự yên tỉnh lâu dài của tinh thần được thực tập trong trường phái Yogachara và bây giờ được các sư Tây Tạng thực tập như một hệ thống thiền định tổng thể. Sự nhất tâm, một trong yếu tố tinh thần trong thiện thức. Tuy nhiên, Samatha hàm nghĩa rút lui thụ động trong khi Vipassana (minh sát) hàm nghĩa thực hiện tích cực  qua thiền tập, làm ngưng bặt những trở ngại. Samatha meditation is concerned with producing a one-pointed mind. Samatha also means quieting, ceasing, tranquility or serenity comes from the literature of Yogachara school and were put into practice in Tibet as a unified system of meditation. One-pointedness of mind, one of the mental factors in wholesome consciousness; however, samatha (tranquility of mind) rather in the negative sense of withdrawal. Vipassana is a more positive achievement (the quietude achieved) through the practice of dhyana, to cause subjugation or cessation of troubles.  The various obstacles that encounter the development of shamatha are overcome through nine stages of mind, six powers and four mental activities:

Samatha-bala (skt): Power of Tranquility.

Samathasukha (skt): Sa Ma Ða Lạc—Hạnh phúc của sự tịch tĩnh. Samatha hay tam ma địa (chỉ quán) là kỹ thuật thực hành giữ cho tâm thanh tịnh và không bị rối loạn bởi những tư tưởng và phiền não xấu; trong khi Vipasyana hay quán là sự thiền định gắn tâm mình vào một chủ đề hay mệnh đề cụ thể. Khi tâm được tịch lặng bằng samatha (chỉ quán), nó sẳn sàng cho một loại hoạt động cao hơn của trí—The bliss of tranquillization. Samatha is the practical art of keeping the mind serene and undisturbed by evil thoughts and passions; while Vipasyana is meditation fixing one’s mind upon a definite subject or proposition. When the mind is tranquillized by Samatha, it is ready for intellectual activity of the higher sort.

Sambhala (skt) Shambhala (p): 

Tên của một vương quốc huyền thoại về phía Ðông Bắc Ấn (nằm từ Trung Á đến Bắc cực)  mà theo truyền thuyết Phật giáo Tây Tạng, là một  trong những “thung lũng ẩn dấu,” tức là nơi mà chúng ta có thể tới ẩn náo trong những lúc khó khăn—Name of a mytical kingdom in the northeast of India (from Central Asia to China and  the North pole). According to Tibetan Buddhism, Sambhala is one of the “hidden valleys,”  certain places that become accessible at times of urgent need.

The ocean of births and deaths, the wheel of becoming in the phenomenal universe . Imprisonment in samsara is conditioned by the three “unwholesome roots” of greed, hatred and ignorance. Only human beings have the ability to depart from samsara and enter into nirvana because they can recognize and eliminate the the three poisons of greed, hatred and ignorance.

Samskara (skt) Sankhara (p): Hành, bao gồm tất cả những thúc bách của ý chí hay những ý định có trước hành động. Hành động nhào nặn, cũng như trạng thái thụ động của những gì đã được nhào nặn. Samskara là uẩn thứ tư trong ngũ uẩn, là móc xích thứ hai trong thập nhị nhân duyên—Action—Formations include all volitional impulses or intentions that precede an action. Mental formation forces or impulses, referring to both the activity of the forming and the passive state of being formed. Samskara, the fourth skandha of the five skandhas, the second link in the chain of Nidanas. 

Samskaras skanda (skt): hành uẩn.

Samskrita (skt): Hữu vi—Doing something—Không dễ gì cho ra một nghĩa Anh ngữ tương đương với “Samskrita.” Hữu vi (có tạo tác). Toàn bộ những hiện tượng có liên quan với nhau, qui định lẫn nhau và tuân theo luật sanh trụ dị diệt. ‘Samskrita’ còn có nghĩa là bất cứ cái gì  làm một điều gì tạo ra một kết quả nào đó; bất cứ cái gì có thể được tạo ra do ảnh hưởng của luật nhân quả  và tùy thuộc hay duyên lẫn nhau. Chư pháp được chia làm hai nhóm chính, theo A Tỳ Ðạt Ma Câu Xá Luận, có 72 hữu vị pháp và ba vô vi pháp, nhưng theo trường phái Duy Thức hay Du Già thì có 94 pháp hữu vi và sáu pháp vô vi—It is not easy to give one English equivalent for Samskrita. Samskrita means presence of becoming (Formed, conditioned); all interdependent and mutually conditioning phenomena, the essential characteristic of which  is that they arise, subsist, change and pass away (anything that does something and is productive of some effect that come under the law of causation and mutual dependence). Samskrita also means anything that does something and productive of some effect, anything that can be brought under the law of causation and mutual dependence. Dharmas are grouped under the two heads, and those belonging to the samskrita are seventy-two and those of asamkrita are three according to the Abhidharmakosa; whereas the Vijnaptimatra or Yogacara school has ninety-four samskrita-dharmas and six asamskrita-dharmas.

Samyak (skt): Chánh đáng—Ðúng--  Correct—Right. 

Samyak-droti (skt): Chánh kiến.

Samyak-karmanta (skt): Chánh nghiệp.

Samyak-Prahanani (skt): Four perfect exertions—See Tứ Chánh Cần. 

Samyak-samadhi (skt): Chánh định.

Samyaksambodhi (skt): Tam miệu Tam bồ đề.

Samyak-sambuddha (skt): Tam Miệu Tam Phật Ðà—Hoàn toàn thức tỉnh, một người đã đạt tới đại giác, một trong mười danh hiệu của Phật: Chánh biến tri—Fully awakened one, a being who has attained perfect complete enlightenment. It also refers to one of the ten epithets of the Buddha. 

Samyak-Samkalpa (skt): Chánh tư duy.

Samyak snoti (skt): Chánh niệm.

Samyak vac (skt): chánh ngữ.

Samyak-vyayama (skt): Chánh tinh tấn.

Samyojana (skt): Kết buộc—Phiền não, những dây trói gồm có 10 thứ—Fetters—There are ten fetters binding beings to the Wheel of Becoming:

            According to the Theravadan Sect, there are ten fetters—Theo phái Theravada, có mười loại kiết sử:

            Chấp thường ngã: Drishti—Belief in permanent self or individuality.

             Nghi hoặc: Vichikitsa—Skeptical doubt or skepticism.

            Chấp nghi lễ cúng kiến: Clinging to Rules and Ritual.

            Tham dục: Trishna—Sensuous Craving or desire.

            Sân hận: Ill-will, hatred.

            Tham sắc giới: Craving for the world of form or refined corporeality.

            Tham muốn vô sắc giới: Craving for the formless world  or incorporeality.

            Khoe khoang lừa dối: Conceit.

            Sôi nổi bất an: Restlessness.

            Ngu dốt: Avidya—Ignorance. 

            According to the Dharma Master Thich Thien Tam in the Unisha Vijaja Dharani Sutra, there are another ten fetters that keep sentient beings in bondage controlling them much like the master-slave relationship—Theo Pháp Sư Thích Thiền Tâm trong Kinh Phật Ðảnh Tôn Thắng Ðà La Ni, lại có mười thứ kiết sử hằng trói buộc và sai khiến chúng sanh tựa như quan hệ chủ tớ:
