ABSTRACT
The main purposes of this paper are to analyze the strategies applied to deal with Noun Phrases (NPs) in economic texts and to make some suggestions in translating NPs. In general, NPs have high frequency of occurrence in documents, and economic document is not an exception. This study focuses on handling troubles in translating English NPs into Vietnamese, especially in business and economics contexts. Hence, to achieve that aim, we discussed relevant translation theory, reviewed basic semantic and structural characteristics of English Noun Phrase, analyzing the strategies used for translating these NPs to provide some suggestions. Through reading and analyzing the translation document, we discovered five main translation strategies applied to deal with NPs in the source text, including shift or transposition, omission, addition, recognized translation and transference. For each type of translation strategies, we conducted to count its frequency, explaining how to apply it effectively and analyzing some specific examples to make it clarified and to avoid ambiguity. We also pointed out drawbacks and gave some suggestions for each type.
