READING COMPREHENSION:
Most people agree that television is one of the most important inventions of this century. Opinions may vary as to its value but no one can deny its great effect upon human kind. Firstly, television is a great educational tool to widen knowledge. Documentary programmes about foreign countries, wildlife, medicine, science, technology,… are all brought to homes for everyone to study. Secondly, television is a good form of entertainment. We can lay comfortably on our sofa at home while watching live performance of a famous singer or enjoying exciting movies without paying any money.
Like other great inventions, television can be and is, unfortunately, abused. It is said that television makes people become more and more passive. For example, they will watch sports on TV rather than actually play these sports themselves. Moreover, because of violent content, some programmes can badly influence millions of viewers, especially the young. Last but not least, watching too much TV is harmful to your eyes. It can cause some eye-related diseases, namely short-sighted.
Certainly there is abuse, but if this medium is used in a correct way, it can become a blessing and not a curse to mankind.
