Example 3 is considerably lower than the previous pitch by Charlotte (267.93 Hz), and it is followed by Samantha’s utterance: “That’s starvation in the best restaurant” (188.17 Hz). This is a telling case of utterance which is said at a similar pitch than the previous utterance (Miranda’s pitch is 173.91 Hz) while is one of the two cases of Samantha’s pitch below the 200 range (the other being the last turn in this scene at 195.58 Hz). In example 4, Miranda’s turn comes after a turn by Charlotte with a much higher average pitch: 306.94. Mr. Big and Carrie’s last interaction in episode 1 (see below Table 2), is an example of deadpan delivery of humor matching Mr. Big’s style of humor delivery. In this passage, out of 11 turns, Carrie mostly speaks in a pitch that ranges from 189.66 to 209.75 Hz, while in one occasion her pitch raises to 214.84 and in two 178 Eduardo Urios-Aparisi and Manuela Wagner occasions the pitch goes below: once 169.33 and even lower in her last turn: 131.49. The utterance “You mean, besides going out every night” can be deemed as an iron- ic remark to the kind of question Big asks: “So, what have you been doing lately?”. Nonetheless, this utterance is in the higher pitch range 209.75 out of an average pitch 192.28 of all her turns in this passage. The utterance “Wow, what’s wrong with you?” ironically points at Big’s having problems because he does not have “sex like a man” and is uttered at a pitch close to the other utterances (208.63 Hz). In episode 3 (“Bay of Married Pigs”), Carrie visits a married couple, Patience and Peter, in the Hamptons. After staying the night at their house, Peter meets Carrie in the hallway, seemingly showing off his manhood by not wearing any underwear. Carrie tells Patience when she comes back from the market.
