Hien Luong -Ben Hal river banks is the historical vestige for a period of nearly 20 years of North-South separation and the heroic war of our nation in the country protection and reunification war.

When Geneva Agreement was signed, Ben Hal river was selected to be the temporary boundary in two years to collect the forces in two banks and general war to reunite the country. Because America - Diem tried to violate the Agreement to divide Vietnam for a long time so Ben Hai river and Hien Luong bridge have come into the history of the nation and memories of the people as a sorrow of being apart and desire for reunification of our people.

Hien Luong Bridge

Hien Luong bridge is crossed Ben Hal river on National Highway No. 1A (at Km735,) to connect Hien Luong hamlet, Vinh Thanh commune, Vinh Linh district on the North bank and Xuan Hoa hamlet, Trung Hal commune, Gio Linh district on South bank. Up to now, it was 8 times the bridge crossing Ben Hai river was constructed (the first bridge was wooden bridge which was constructed in 1922 and the latest modern bridge was constructed in 1996), however the bridge with deepest impression in the history was the bridge constructed by the French in 1952. Although this bridge was only existed up to 1967 but that bridge was the direct symbol of the sorrow of being apart of the nation.

In this place, from 7/1954 - 10/1956, there were many fighting between our troops and the enemy troops. Many people and soldiers struggled to ask for performing Geneva Agreement and this place was also the place of many touching stories about the affection of the North and the South.

Hien Luong Flagpole

Protecting and maintaining the National Flag waving on the sky of the boundary was an exploit. We had to “race” with the enemy in terms of the height of the flagpole and the width of the flag while the enemy tried all efforts to collapse Hien Luong flagpole. In order to protect Hien Luong flagpole, soldiers of Hien Luong police post had to fight in more than 300 small and big battles any many soldiers fell for the ever-waving of the flag on the sky of the country. Only from 19/05/1956 to 28/10/1967, we hanged 267 national flags of different sizes. In 1967, we had to change the flagpole for 11 times and change the flags for 42 times because they were damaged by bombs and guns of American troops. Hien Luong flagpole was the truth of the revolution and the sacred concept about the affection of the Northern Socialist where days and nights spent loves and misses for the South.

Reunification Desire Statue

Reunification desire statue was constructed from 2002, completed in 2008 and located in the system of Hien Luong - Ben Hai river banks historical relic. The whole statue is toward the North with the images of Southern Mother and her children with their souls days and nights toward the North, the capital where Uncle Ho is there with the desire for reunification of the North and the South under the same home roof. Latitude Parallel 17 Museum

Located in the Hien Luong - Ben Hai river banks historical relic, latitude parallel 17 museum is located in the Northern bank. Currently the museum is the place to displace hundreds of objects and pictures about a woeful and majestic period of the army and the people of Vinh Linh, Quang Tri and the whole country in 20 years of the war to fight for the reunification of the North and the South of the country. Especially the picture of Mother Diem and the National Flag were waving to protect the sky of the country all days.

Hien Luong Police Post

In accordance with Geneva Agreement, along the military boundary, there were 4 temporary police posts in Hien Luong, Cua Tung (Northern river bank), Xuan Hoa and Cat Son (Southern river bank).

Hien Luong police post was located near the bridge in the North including 3 buildings of A, B and C which together form V shape. Building A was constructed in 1955 where was the headquarter of police post in the Northern river bank. Building B was living places of polices. Building C was the army ordnance store where welcomed domestic and foreign visitors. Hien Luong police post included 2 squads (16 persons) under the Army Police force.

Hien Luong police post was under our control for 12 years (1954 -1965) where was not the place for denouncing the violation of Geneva Agreement of the America to international organizations but also the place where many severe fighting between our troops and enemy to protect his non-militaiy zone.

Loudspeaker System

To disclose the invading plot of the American Government and encourage and give strength to the Southern people in the war, we constructed the loudspeaker system with large and modern scale. The total capacity of this loudspeaker system on the Northern bank of Hien Luong river was 180,000W and 7,000W particularly for the bridge area of Hien Luong river. This loudspeaker system includes loudspeakers with capacity of from 25W to 500W. With various and diversified broadcasting programs, this loudspeaker system really infringed the loudspeaker system of the Government of America in the Southern river bank. ‘The war of sound” in two banks of Hien Luong river contributed to express the belief in the Party and Uncle Ho in the day when the country would be reunified.

Quang Tri Ancient Citadel

Quang Tri Ancient Citadel is located in the centre of Quang Tri town, approximately 2km away from National Highway No. 1A to the East. Reflecting in meek Thach Han river, the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel is the grave and bright symbol of the heroic revolution with the desire for freedom and independence. In this place, under the grass bed of the Ancient Citadel, blood of thousands of soldiers and the people was absorbed deeply in the ground in the war for protecting the country. Coming to the Ancient Citadel, the visitors shall wallow in peaceful and sacred space to remember of the violent and heroic war of our army and people against the American Empire in 81 days and nights of the boiling summer in 1972 which is well known throughout the world and to see the vitality of a land full with rain of bombs and storms of bullets. Coming to the Ancient Citadel, you will come to the land of spirit and memories of the most spiritual things.

The Quang Tri Ancient Citadel was recognized by Ministry of Culture and Information (currently known as Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) rank as the vestige of National level in accordance with Decision No. 235/QD-BVHTT dated 12/12/1986. In 1994, the Quang Tri Ancient Citadel was ranked in the list of National vestiges with specially importance.

Mai Quoc Ca Statute

Statute located at the Thach Han river bridge, 500m far from Quang Tri Ancient Citadel to the North, acknovledging the undaunted fight and heroic sacrifice of Mai Quoc Ca platoon on 10th April, 1972 in the American war to protect Quang Tri town.

In 1973, Mai Quoc Ca platoon was bestowed the prestigous title Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and the Government. Ministry of Transport and Quang Tri Province constructed Mai Quoc Ca Platoon Memory Statute in 1996.

The Statute is located in the citadel complex where people and soldiers nationwide come to commemorate gratefully the heroic martyrs.

The ritual hall and the wreath laying quay on Thach Han river.

In 1972, two banks of Thach Han river became gateway for our military force to supply food and ammunition to strengthen support to the battlefield. There happened the violent fight of our military force and people during 81 days and nights to protect Quang Tri Ancient Citadel, left behind thousands of soldiers under Thach Han river bed. As usual, on

the occasion of celebrating the Quang Tri libration on 1st May every year, Quang Tri residents and peopIe nationwide visit the CitadeI bringing along fresh bouquets releasing to Thach Han river to cominenoate the heroic martyrs. Deriving from such idea, People‘s Committee of Quang Tri province and VietinBank decided to invest in constructing the ritual hall and the wreath laying quay on Thach Han river. This humanism works was completed with Bell Tower of the Citadel to create a highlight in the historical relic’s community in Quang Tri Ancient Citadel. This is the place for people nationwide to visit and offer flowers to express their gratitude for martyrs fallen down on this area.

Le Duan Commemoration House, Statue and Park

The house where commemorates the General Secretary Le Duan is located in Hau Kien hamlet, Trieu Thanh commune, Trieu Phong district, about 3km away from Quang Tri town along Provincial Road 64 to the East North. Memorial house is the place to express the esteem and gratitude of the people throughout the country in general and people of Quang Tri in particular to Le Duan’s career. On the occasion of 100th birth anniversary of the former General Secretary Le Duan (07/04/1907- 07/04/2007), the local government and people of Quang Tri inaugurated the commemoration area including park, house and the statue. The statue of General Secretary Le Duan was casted by rock crystal monolithic block with base having the height of 9.9m and ceremony place with width of 1,570m2 located at the centre of the park. Together with the commemoration house, this is a works with much social and political meanings of the whole country to express the deep gratitude to the talent leader of the Party, the nation and contribute to the education on revolution tradition to the young generations today and in the future.

The Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam Republic

This relic is in the vicinity of Tan Hoa hamlet, Cam Thanh commune, Cam Lo district, 12km far from Dong Ha city on the West, about 200m from National Road No 9 on the North. The residence of the Provisional revolutionaiy government of South Vietnam Republic was commenced to build on 6/5/1973 and finished on 30/5/1973. The whole material was contributed by Northern people.

Since established, the area has gathered democracy forces around revolutionary government to fight for democracy and national independence. The first time in liberated area, provisional revolutionary government has an office to work and establish diplomacy relation with nations and countries all around the world, to represent Southern people’s voice. The provisional revolutionary government with lucid and sensible strategies and policies has leaded Southern people from this victory to another one, conducted the sacred war of resistance against America Empire to victory completedly. The area was ranked national vestige in 1991 by Ministry of Culture and Information.

Quang Tri Museum

Quang Tri Museum was established on the separation of Binh Tri Thien Museum. The museum located at No. 03, Nguyen Hue street, Dong Ha city, with an area of 10,000m2, two displaying systems: fixed space and outdoor space. The fixed displaying system has an area of 2,350m2, including 02 floors and displaying 5,000 documents, original objects and nearly 1,000 photos. Quang Tri Museum is ranked the best museum of the Central, which have attracted the attention of people all around the country to visit.

Ho Chi Minh Trail

On mighty Truong Son mountain range of the country with S shape, the trail having the great honor to bear the name of the loved leader of Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh trail has become the legend road with the song of a time of “Splitting Truong Son to find road saving the country when the soul is full of hope for future”. Especially, Ho Chi Minh trail crossing Quang Tri province had become the central point in the years of violent war against American Empire. Ho Chi Minh trail relic includes:

Ho Stream

This is the name of mountainous on the West of Vinh Linh district and belongs to Vinh Ha commune, approximately 7km away from Ben Quan town. This is the starting point of the trail on Truong Son road to support for the Southern battlefield in the most difficult period to start the itinerary of “Splitting Truong Son to find road saving the country” of Vietnamese nation.

Khe Sanh – Sa Tam – Ta Long

This is the branch road of Ho Chi Minh trail located in two districts of Huong Hoa and Dakrong. This road is connected with Road 9 at Km65 and intersected with Ho Chi Minh trail at Km72 and 27km away from Dakrong beauty spot. This was the strategic transportation road when Truong Son road was moved from the West to the East to make considerable contributions for the war to liberate the South and reunite the country.

Ben Tat Suspension Bridge

This bridge is crossed the upstream of Ben Hal river on Road 15 and located in Vinh Truong commune, Vinh Linh district, 40m away from the gate to Truong Son National Cemetery to the West - North.

Ben Tat suspension bridge was constructed in 1973 by Regiment No.99 of the Corps of Engineers on Road 15 to replace the overpass in the upstream of Ben Hal river by Ben Tat underground port. Up to 11/1973, Ben Tat suspension bridge was completed and operated to speed up the supports for Southern battlefield.

Vinh Moc Tunnel – Underground village

Located in Vinh Thach commune, Vinh Linh district, 36km away from Dong Ha city to the East North, the tunnels of Vinh Moc are the most unique works in tens of small and big tunnels works in Vinh Linh district which were constructed from 04/1966 and completed in 12/1967. Vinh Moc tunnels were the inter-tunnels connected with 13 gates with thousands of meters of the tunnels and small ones crossing thousands of meters of combat trench. The structure of the tunnels is divided into 3 layers in which the deepest layer is 23m away from the ground. Layers are connected by the main axis with the length of 768m, height of 1.6m to 1.8m, width of from 1.2m to 1.5m. Two main axles are from 3m to 5m away which are in the same family. The tunnels include a big conference room with the capacity of from 50 to 80 persons where was the place for meetings, art performances, surgery room, maternity clinic, observation station, air ventilation well, water well...Vinh Moc tunnel is the small image of a village constructed under the ground where was both accommodation, living, bomb avoidance place for the people and the headquarter of the local government, logistics store for keeping foods, weapons for Con Co island and Southern battlefield in the years of violent war against the American Emperor.

Coming to Vinh Moc tunnel today, the visitors can live again the glorious and magnanimous period of the history and people who made it.

Mc.Namara Electric Fence

Located in Gio Linh district, 14km away from Dong Ha city to the North, Doc Mieu was considered as the most important point of Mc. Namara fence. In this place, the enemy constructed the concrete tunnels, mobile blockhouse system with firecracker battlefield to bombard the North of Ben Hai river with 37 air defense battlefields, control centre to protect the fence, amour-plate battalion with many complex companies of the America. Around the base, besides the barbed wire fence with bombs and mines, there was a alarm system to detect the sudden break.

All though this was a modern base, Mc.Namara electrical fence was gradually ineffective by activities of our troops. Firstly, our troops made attacks to destroy each section to bring the forces and arms into the battlefield. In first days, we fired on Quang Tri battlefield in 1972, guerillas of Trung Giang, Trung Hai, Trung Son communes surrounded and shot hundreds of DKB, A2 bullets and bombs into the base in 3 days and the enemy had to flee at 31/03/1972 night and led to the collapse of Quan Ngang base. . .

Today, Mc. Namara electrical fence rehabilitation project was approved by the Government of Vietnam and after this project is completed, this will be an attractive destination for tourists, especially the researchers on military arts.

Truong Son National Cemetery

After the reunification date of the country, the Central Party and Ministry of National Defense approved the project on constructing Truong Son National Cemetery in Quang Tri province to be the place for commemorating and respecting the fellow children of the fatherland who sacrificed along Truong Son road for the career of liberation and reunification of the nation.

The Cemetery was constructed on 24/10/1975 and completed on 10/04/1977, located on 6 hills as 6 wings of the flower in Gio Linh district, approximate 38km away from Dong Ha city and more than 20km away from Gio Linh town to the West- North.

Truong Son National Cemetery is the place gathering 10,333 graves- the forever resting place of soldiers who sacrificed on Ho Chi Minh trail in the war against American Enemy to save the country. This is the commemoration works with biggest scale and high art to express the deep love, gratitude, thanks and respects of the whole Party, army troops and the people for the fellow children from nationwide to those who died for the career of national liberation and reunification of the country.

Road 9 National Cemetery

Road 9 National Cemetery was constructed on 02/09/1995 and completed on 27/07/1997 on a hill of Ward 4, Dong Ha city, approximate 6km away from the centre of Dong Ha city to the West. This is the resting place of 10,045 revolutionary martyrs. Revolutionary martyrs resting in this place mainly sacrificed on the battlefield along Road 9 in the war against America to save the country of our people.

In the main platform in the cemetery, there was a bell-tower with beautiful architectural lines with a bell with weight of nearly 1 ton inside. Behind of the platform, graves were planned into lots, zones or each province. In holidays, especially on the Day of Martyrs and Wounded Soldiers 27/7 every year, the relatives of these martyrs, organization, unions and young people from every where of the country come to this place to commemorate the people who died for the peace of the country. Incense sticks are represented for the sincere thanks of to the people who died for the country and for reminding oneself of a glorious and magnanimous period in the history of the Vietnamese National.

Lao Bao Prison

Lao Bao prison located in Duy Tan hamlet, Tan Thanh commune, Huong Hoa district, and approximate 22km away from Khe Sanh town to the West.

In the Feudal period, this place was boundary protection post of Nguyen family to protect the Western frontier of the Country. At end of XIX Century and beginning of XX Century, to put down the patriotic movement of our people, the French Colonialist paid all efforts to terrorize and arrest patriotic soldiers and labour people and construct Lao Bao prison (in 1908) to keep in prison patriotic people in the Central region.

Lao Bao prison was the biggest prison in the Indochina at that time keeping patriotic people and communist soldiers of Vietnam and Lao. Regulations in this prison were very violent and harsh. They tortured prisoner to become disabled people. In the spiritual life, prisoners were not permitted to read newspapers, write letter to their families or meet their relatives… All personnel activities had to have permission from guards.

Lao Bao prison is a place representing for the revolution will and determination for the victory in all situations of the patriotic people and communist soldiers and also the valuable lesson of revolution morality education for the young generations.

Ta Con Air-base – Road 9 – Khe Sanh

From Lao Bao town, along National Highway No.9 to the East of approximate 20km, the visitors will come to Ta Con Air-base - Road 9 - Khe Sanh. Ta Con Air-base - Road 9 - Khe Sanh is the name of the strategic military base of the American troops in 1966 - 1968. Located in Khe Sanh military base, Ta Con Air-base - Road 9 was the place linking closely with many important events relating to the campaign to liberate Khe Sanh in 1968. Together with a series of bases constructed along Road 9 from Dong Ha to Khe Sanh, Ta Con Air-base - Road 9 military base was considered as the central base constructed with the length of 2km and width of 1km including many sub-bases with permanent fortified positions and a big-size airport for many heavy militaly planes for landind and taking off such as C130, C123, helicopters for transporting army troops and weapons. With such arrangement, Ta Con Air-base and other neighboring points became an uninterrupted and mobile defending system of the American Army which was considered as the “hardest” point in the Khe Sanh military base.

Ta Con Air-base - Road 9 was recognized by Ministry of Culture and Information as the National vestige in accordance with Decision No. 236/QD-BVHTT dated 12/12/1986.

Con Co – “Offshore watching tower”

Looking from the mainland, Con Co island looks like a battleship to watch and guard the sea and sky of Quang Tri. Con Co island is also known with other names such as Tiger or Me island, which is approximate 15 sea mile away from Cua Tung coast to the West. The island is 230ha in width, and in the war against the America to protect the country, this place was very heroic with many victories. Thus in the war against the America, Con Co island was commended as the heroic island for two times.

Coming to Con Co island today, the visitors can visit and be reminded of the months and years in the war of Quang Tri people on Con Co heroic island to see the vitality of the island with many beautiful landscapes which passionate the people.

La Vang Church

La Vang church belongs to Hai Phu commune, Hai Lang district, 16km from Dong Ha city in Southwest direction. It is said that in August 1798 (Canh Thinh King Dynasty), there was religion prohibition order, catholic killing, catholic people run to hide in La Vang, and the Virgin Mary appeared on sod beside three huge banyan trees to “rescue souls in danger”. Then, La Vang church was built in the first years of Minh Mang King Dynasty to be the place to “rescue souls” of catholic people and remind where the Virgin Mary appeared. From 1886 to 1900, the church was rebuilt to be more spacious, and in 1961, the church was officially recognized “Basilica” by Catholic Church. Every year, in the middle of August, catholic community from everywhere come, join festivals, and pray.

Sac Tu Pagoda

Sac Tu pagoda has another name Tinh Quang pagoda, located in Ai Tu town, Trieu Phong district nearly 1km from 1A National Highway in the West. Pagoda was built in 1739 under Le Y Tong King with the name Tinh Do pagoda, was restored in 1941 and rebuilt in 1975. Going through more than 250 years, ups and down of history made the temple change much, but it still confirms the importance by traditional human source of land and people of Quang Tri. The temple stores a high art value item, it is Amitabha Buddha statue.

Sac Tu pagoda was recognized national vestigate by Ministry of Culture-Information in 1991.

National Reunification Festival (Internet)

1. The national Re-Unification Festival

The festival is held in Hien Luong – Ben Hai River Banks national historical relic, where witness the pain of 20 years of nation partition; as well as represent the aspirations for peaceful and unification of Vietnam people. The festival is held annually, and held as a national festival on the full years celebration of the Southern liberation, national unification on 30th ,April 1975.

3. Legendary Truong Son Festival:

This is the graceful and memorial activity for heroic martyrs who lying in Truong Son National Cemetery, Road.9 National Cemetery and other cemeteries in province. The festival is attached to memorial of war invalids and revolutionary martyrs day 27th, July annually, presenting the morality “when drinking water, remember who dug the well”. The festival is held as a national festival once/3 years.

4. Sac Tu Pagoda Festival:

The festival is held at Sac Tu Pagoda, Ai Tu townlet, Trieu Phong district on 18th, Feb annually in Lunar Calendar, attracting thousands of Buddhist monks and nuns all over the country to celebrate the religious ceremony. Sac Tu Pagoda is one of pagodas that were early built in Quang Tri, affecting remarkably on the developing progress of Buddhism in Cochinchina.

5. Arieuping Festival:

This is the interesting traditional festival that has much of cultural features of the Pako – Van Kieu ethnic group. It is held during 4 days and 3 nights. Arieuping is a reassembling graves and grave worshiping festival, together with interesting ceremonies and activities of ethnic people in the West of Quang Tri, such as: stabling buffalo, traditional dancing and singing, drinking stem wine (tube wine), competing in shooting with crossbows,…

6. La Vang Palanquin Festival:

The festival is held in La Vang Pilgrimage Center, Hai Phu commune, Hai Lang district from 12th to 15th, August in Solar Calendar. This is a unique religious festival in Quang Tri only, attracting thousands of Catholics, domestic and foreign tourists.

Dong Dinh is a small hamlet that belongs to Cam Lo village before and now is a village of Cam Lo townlet, Cam Lo district. This village has advantageous location: it is near Cam Lo kermis, the river and the forest so villagers can expand production and develop incense craft. Materials for this craft are incense powder and “Trèng” powder - these are available trees on mountains around Dong Dinh village. After preparing materials, steps of making incense are carried out; the method is handcrafted and simple, not requires much in vestment as well as technical actions. Every member in family can participate in producing; the target is mostly to utlize agricultural leisure and local available materials.

LAM XUAN MATS CRAFT VILLAGE

Lam Xuan is an agricultural village with large pupulation, small cultivating area. This is an uncultivated, muddy, acidic alum area before that only suit to grow “năn” trees, papyrus - major materials for mats craft. Eventhough this craft did not appear simultaneously with the appearance of Lam Xuan village but it was formed early in Quang Tri and became fond of villager’s life hundreds years ago.

The major materials of sedge mat craft are papyrus, “năn” trees exploited from village’s fields. The second material is jutes to make hems of sedge mats that exploited from the western mountains of Gio Linh district. The weave blocks are made by bamboo, wood. Production process is handcrafted, utilizes every time, and every one in family can participate. There are more than 100 weave blocks in the village, with over two thirds households produce, that provide more than 300 sedge mats for whole region, create jobs and increase income for villagers.

LAN DINH PLAITING CRAFT VILLAGE

Lan Dinh is an agricultural village early formed in hill region of Gio Linh district. Natural condition is convenience for developing plaiting craft, especially rattan and bamboo - available materials on hill slopes around the village.

Traditional products of village are means of production and living such as: small baskets, large and flat baskets, closely-woven baskets, sieves... Besides plaiting by bamboo, there are handicraft products made by rattan such as: cane plates, bowls, basins, baskets... Sale market of these products is expanded more and more, brings fairly good income to villagers. At the present time, Lan Dinh scraft village is step by step developing traditional cane plaiting and bamboo inlay lacquered painting craft in order to attract labors and provide export products for province.

RICE NOODLES MAKING CRAFT IN CAM THACH VILLAGE

Cam Thach is one of 8 villages of Cam An commune, Cam Lo district that early formed, rice noodles making is traditional craft attached to formation and developing process of villagers from the beginning of reclaiming this area in the 15th century. Rice noodles making process is improved from handicraft to use some technical sections in order to increase labour productivity. Products are made more and more, there are over two thirds of households specialized in manufacturing rice noodles sale maket is all over the district. The standard of villager’s living is improved day by day thanks to rice noodles making craft.

STEAMED THIN RICE PANCAKE CRAFT IN PHUONG LANG VILLAGE

Steamed thin rice pancake is delicious, popular dish of Quang Tri’s people in particular and Vietnamese people in gerneral. Come to Phuong Lang village, Hai Ba commune, Hai Lang district, the tourist will enjoy sapid steamed thin rice pancake made of well-grinded ordinaiy rice. Steamed thin rice pancake making became a traditional craft of Phuong Lang’s villagers, participated in creating jobs and increasing income for local people.

CARPENTRY CRAFT IN GlO LINH, VINH LINH, DONG HA

Cat Son is a coastal village in Gio Linh district that famous for traditional carpentry and wonderful scoring products. Material is wood, especially precious wood types. At first, craftsmen learned from other regions then producing simple means in local village, after that, they cooperated with capenters in the North and in Hue to develop fine wood scoring, aragonite inlaying and scoring, pearl inlaying scraft. The famous scoring products are set of “Giàng” made by jack fruit tree, shellfish and aragonite scoring cabinet, especially two wood scoring baldachins with line “Thuong dang toi linh” that being preserved in Quang Tri Museum.

When Cat Son is famous of scoring and inlaying carpentry, Vinh Linh, Dong Ha have famous tradition in setting up, building up Ruong houses in Quang Tri. There are workman groups specialized in doing this scraft for local villagers and “Rường” houses as well as other civil woodwork products became famous products.

CASTING WORK

In Quang Tri, casting scraftsmen make use of material resources such as: soil to make mould, copper ore and carry out handcrafted casting process to create metal casting products. The major products are copper pots and means for living, spiritual life of Kinh, Van Kieu and Pako people. These products used to be famous and popular with consumers.

PALM – LEAF CONICAL HAT CRAFT

Bo Lieu commune, Trieu Phong district and Hai Xuan commune, Hai Lang district are famous of making palm-leaf conical hat. According to fact researches and folk anecdotes, running conical hat with big thread work in Bo Lieu and Hai Xuan appeared hundreds years ago. Although it is a side work, it makes fairly good income for villagers. Conical hats of Bo Lieu and Hai Xuan are popular with consumers thanks to its nice appearance and long-lasting material.

AN LAC FLOWER VILLAGE

Next to gentle Hieu river, An Lac flower village is in Dong Giang ward, Dong Ha city. This is the largest and the most famous flower village in Quang Tri province. An Lac village was found before 1975 with area of more than 27ha, mainly planting flowers such as: daisy, rose, lily, crown of thorns, dahlia, gerbera, etc. On holidays, full- moon day or Tet, the village provide internal and external provincial markets tens of thousands of flower pots of all kinds, bringing a stable income for local people.

WINE BREWING WORK IN KIM LONG

Wine brewing is a long-standing traditional craft in Kim Long village, Hai Que commune, Hai Lang district. Over hundreds years of existence and development, Kim Long took advantadge of technological process in producing, increasing quality, diversifying forms in order to bring Kim Long’s products into the whole home market and export to Laos market. Kim Long wine is gradually positioning its brand in both domestic and international market.

FISH SAUCE PROCESSING WORK

Cua Tung, Cua Viet, My Thuy, Vinh Thai are not only beautiful beaches attracting many tourists but also the villages that have famous fish sauce making work in Quang Tri province.

Villager often salt fish from March to November (Lunar calendar) then take filtered fish sauce. Fish sauce drips from barrels in color from deep red to red brown having wonderful quality. Cua Tung, Cua Viet, My Thuy, Vinh Thay fish sauce meet demand of people in Quang Tri, neighboring provinces and regions in Laos, Thailand... on the East- West economic corridor.

This is cemetery of more than ten thousand heroes, martyrs from 3 kinds of military: main soldiers, local soldiers, militia and youth volunteers who fought, served for the fighting on Road 9 and Laos during the war against America.

Road 9 national martyrs cemetery has 13ha area of grave land, with 16 large and small constructions. There are 2 large artistic and historical constructions: Victory statue with 18m height, describing image of Vietnam soldiers close with children, young women and neighbors from Laos, expressing solidarity of 2 nations; and Ceremonial zone with architectural works: memorial house with 90m2 area which built by reinforced concrete; 3 relief parts surrounding memorial house which expressing unforgettable images of heroic fighting days of soldiers, people; 4 statues in front of memorial house which are extremely exquisite which give the viewers the feeling of lively by its face and gesture. Besides, there are other auxiliary works such as trees, light system…which are designed and built very modern and dignified.

Road 9 national martyrs cemetery for the soldiers who died on Road 9 battlefield, Quang Tri battlefield in particular and on Laos in general. This is a construction for expressing gratitude which has huge and large scale with high artistry; expressing the deeply gratefulness of the Party and government to people all over the country who died for the national liberation, reunification.

After the national liberation, The Party and Ministry of Defense have approved project on building Truong Son martyrs Cemetery in Quang Tri province as a memorial place where honoring people who died on Truong Son road because of national liberation. The cemetery is constructed on 24/10/1975 and completed on 10/4/1977. The construction commander is the high command of Division 559 with the participation of 40 units of main soldiers and local soldiers. Besides, there are also specialized workers on inscribing letter on stone stele in Hoa Hai commune, Hoa Vang district, Quang Nam province.

Truong Son martyrs Cemetery has 10.333 graves of martyrs; with total area 140.999m2; in there, area of grave lands is 23.000m2, statue zone is 7.000m2, trees land is 60.000m2, park is 35.000m2 and road campus is 15.000m2. The grave lands area is divided into 10 main areas.

Truong Son martyrs Cemetery is for soldiers who died on Ho Chi Minh trail route in the period against America. This is the repay construction with the most massive, biggest scale and high artistry, expressing deeply gratitude, respect of the Party, people and our nation to beloved people all over the country who died for the national liberation and reunification.

On 40 years anniversary of the founding Truong Son army corps (19/5/1959 – 19/5/1999), the Party and the Government decided to upgrade, repair Truong Son cemetery with many items: the gate, road system, the headquarters model, logos of locals, statues, drainage system, internal electricity, trees around the cemetery,... so far, all items of constructions have been completed in basically.

Truong Son martyrs cemetery today is not only the resting place for heroes, martyrs but also the place of worship, a shinning symbol of revolutionary heroism, the spirit to fight for the independence and peaceful aspiration of our nation. Truong Son martyrs cemetery is place for martyrs’ family, the Party, the government, people all over the country and foreign friends come to express their gratitude with the tradition of Vietnamese: Drinking water, remembering its source.

Currently, Truong Son martyrs cemetery has 24 officers, staffs who usually take care the cemetery and welcome martyrs’s family, national and international people come to visit the cemetery.

Cua Viet tourism – service area is identified as the focal point to develop Quang Tri tourism, as well as the motivation to continues to develop tourism route of Cua Tung, Cua Viet coastal area and Con Co island. It is known as beach - island tourism – service area from Viet Nam on the East – West economic corridor, linking to Laos, Thailand, Myanmar. Currently, Quang Tri province is investing to construct this place into tourism – services area with large size to welcome tourists, especially international tourists through East – West economic corridor.

Quang Tri also has beautiful and pristine beaches such as: Vinh Thai, Vinh Kim, Trieu Lang, My Thuy, with long white and smooth sands and wonderful scenery…Especially, Con Co island away just nearly 30km from the coast on the West, with 230ha. In the war against America, this is the heroic place with many resounding victories. Con Co island with heroic and historical tradition, diversified flora and fauna which are invaluable asset formed by the nature; with 83ha of forest, extremely rich flora and fauna, coastal corals with 109 species, in which, there are 28 species of seaweed which have high economic value; there are 267 species of fishes. The ecosystem not only has economic value but also has meaning in activities of tourism, research and exploration. This is one of places which has important location on national security. With below advantages, it is need to built Con Co island into area of entertainment, swimming and luxury resort. This will be an ideal resort for weekend, as well as place for organizing activities of swimming, playing sports which attract near and far tourists.

Cua Viet – Cua Tung – Con Co forms beach – island tourism triangle with complementary strengths and be considered to develop into potential national tourism area. Tourists come to this complex are not merely domestic tourists, it should promote well for tourists from potential large markets. That is tourist resource from Laos and the Northeastern area of Thailand which lack of beach. It is hard to have near convenient geographical condition as Quang Tri – Tourists “One day eat rice from 3 countries” (From Thailand – Laos to Quang Tri, Vietnam, just only nearly 340km road through Highway 9). Besides, many tourists from Europe, USA,…come to Quang Tri for relaxation, discovery and especially visiting old battlefield. Therefore, the sea, island and unique cultural and historical relics lie along highway 1A which near the coast in this area will completely satisfy the needs of tourists.

Evaluating huge potentials, advantages below about tourism, from very early, Quang Tri focused on tourism economy development. In the past years, the Provincial Party Committee, People’ Council, People’s Committee have issued resolutions, decisions such as: Resolution no. 02/NQ-TU dated 15/11/2011 by Quang Tri Party’s Committee on Quang Tri tourism development to 2010; Resolution no. 04/2010/NQ-HDND by Quang Tri People’s Council dated 20/4/2010 on Planning, Plans on tourism development in Con Co district to 2015 with orientation to 2020; Decision no. 345/QĐ-UBND dated 23/2/2016 by Quang Tri People’ Committee on approving General Planning on economy – society development in Con Co island to 2020 with orientation to 2030; Decision no. 2561/QĐ-UBND dated 16/12/2013 by Quang Tri People’s Committee on approving the outline, tasks for building General planning on Quang Tri tourism development to 2020, orientation to 2030. Resolutions of Provincial Party’ Committee, People’ Council also confirmed that: Developing tourism sector into an important economic sector in provincial economic structure ; developing beach – island economy, developing Cua Viet – Cua Tung – Con Co area into modern beach tourism, creating premise to make this area into tourism area with national and international level.

With strategy focusing on strengthening investment to develop beach – island tourism, Quang Tri Provincial People Committee approved planning on tourism areas development. Such as: Cua Viet tourism – service area; Cua Tung – Cua Viet route coastal tourism – service areas and Vinh Thai tourism – service area. Especially, Cua Tung – Cua Viet beach – Con Co island tourism area is being driven into national tourism area to promote strengths of relaxing tourism, cuisine, beach – island exploitation, entertainment, golf … This area is known as an attractive destination for international tourists from East – West economic corridor, especially Laos and Thailand.

However, the key projects in period from now to 2020 will focus on investing for projects on developing Cua Viet – Cua Tung beach tourism, Lao Bao tourism service center, Dong Ha tourism infrastructure system…Before, Province had detailed planning on tourism areas such as Cua Viet tourism – service area with 141 ha, Cua Viet – Cua Tung coastal tourism area with 170ha, Cua Tung tourism area with 135ha, Cua Tung – Vinh Moc Tunnel tourism area with 746ha, Vinh Thai tourism – service area with 518ha, Hai Khe tourism area with 53,8ha, Con Co tourism area with 45,49 ha. By the end of 2014, there are 20 projects investing on Cua Tung – Cua Viet tourism area with total registed capital 3.563,4 billion Dong with total area 180,29 ha.

Beach – island tourism is one strength of Quang Tri. In the last time, province focused on investment, however, the investment for developing this product still has many difficulties. Some valuable special beach – island tourism resources such as Cua Tung has developed but it is not really suitable and being lost its attraction, or the investment for developing Con Co island is still limited. The investors do not care much about investment for developing tourism infrastructure, because they all think that the Government must in charge of that works, and the investors only focus on the field of business activities investment such as building tourism products, hotels, restaurants... for exploitation. Quang Tri has not really succeeded in attracting strategic investors, who has financial capacity to invest for building general resorts with big scale, high quality. Many projects has been planned but still has not attracted the attention of investors. Most of projects in the field of developing tourism infrastructure system are projects on constructing hotels and accommodations with small and medium scale. The progress of construction of projects on constructing hotels along beaches is still slow. In 20 projects at the main area for developing Cua Viet beach tourism, there are only 03 completed projects, 06 projects are constructing (most of them have not achieved 30% the work), 05 projects completed procedures but have not implemented yet and other projects have been at stage of completing procedure for preparing investment.

Viet Nam in general and Quang Tri province in particular are facing to tremendous challenges in organizing exploitation and using effectively beach – island resource. Climate change is unpredictable, threatening directly to community and coastal ecosystems. The decline of fishery resources, biodiversity; the pollution of marine environment is increasing. Especially, after the recently incident of death fishes in the central provinces has effected seriously to marine environment in the immediate and long – term, adversely impact to economic sectors related to beaches and the life of production, living of coastal people. Especially, East Sea now is currently the hot spot in the territorial sovereignty dispute of countries in region. Making situation more and more complicated, therefore, the Party, people and nation must attach much importance to the preservation of beach – island sovereignty of the country.

Striving for beach tourism brand to made a breakthrough for tourism development in the next stage, focusing on implementing well some main tasks and solutions: Firstly, quickly completing planning on tourism sector development, planning on tourism infrastructure construction in association with general planning on social – economic development of province to 2020 which approved by the Government. Strengthening quality of management and administration of planning implementation, investigation of tourism investment projects. It is need to solve well the relation between tourism and culture development and human development; developing tourism in association with protecting natural resources and environment, nation security, defense and social safety...

It needs to focus on investment on constructing synchronous tourism infrastructure in the planning. Firstly, transportation system serves tourism combined with developing economic sectors and serving people; completing the technical infrastructure in important tourism places, areas in associated with investment promotion, management and exploitation of tourism potentials; building a road-map of embellishment, upgrading cultural and historical relics in a suitable way to promote investment efficiency; exploiting the existing infrastructure efficiency, especially the system of new high level hotels, restaurants...Especially, it is need to focus on investment for constructing Con Co island into tourism island; soon promulgate and implement effectively the work of opening Con Co tour; focus on solving management mechanism, ensuring uniform, smooth, synchronous; construct essential for tourism activities ; have adequate policies for calling island tourism investment...at the same time, it is need to focus on investment for infrastructure construction of Cua Tung – Cua Viet area, this will be not only the biggest beach - island tourism center but also the starting place to Con Co.

Positive researching and promulgating some legal special mechanism and policies to strengthen investment for tourism development; focusing on resources and mobilizing effectively solutions to call strategic investors who has potentials and experience to create breakthrough progress. Supporting for formation of handicraft villages in order to create products for introducing about Quang Tri land, people which have ability for attracting tourists...

By many forms of information in the nation, the region and on the world, introducing tourism products, tourism business units and travels are able to serve well tourists. Prioritizing resources for the work of information, promotion, cooperation for tourism development. Enhancing transportation, human resource, budget to ensure implementing well the tasks of tourism promotion. The tourism enterprises must join community with government in order to promote business image, market survey, introduce tour, tourism products; at the same time, training the human resources, especially in term of skills and foreign languages... to attract tourists.

It is need to focus on training and strengthening tourism services quality in association with protecting environment, natural landscapes, historical relics and the value of intangible culture; associating economic development with improving national defense and people security, strengthening people’ knowledge, caring people’ life; creating condition for fishman in working, as well as attracting investors for researching, working in long term in zones of industry, services, tourism of province.

Strengthening propaganda works, promotion and improving awareness about Vietnam beaches’ products, which are friendly with environment; protecting beach – island borders and sovereignty, strengthening position and brand name of beach products of Quang Tri in particular and Viet Nam in general on the national and international market.

LAO BAO MOUNTAIN GOAT

Goats are raised free-range on high hills and mountains by local people, therefore their meat is good-smell and delicious. From goats, chefs can process to make many wonderful dishes like: raw goat blood soup, rare goat by lemon, goat with fried rice powder, goat hot pot, baked goat... When visiting special commercial-economic Lao Bao, tourists should not forget to enjoy dishes made from goat meat together with some cup of beer or wine, this will be very fantastic.

SMOKED VEAL

Smoked veal is processed in all our country, but smoked veal of Quang Tri wind and sun land may be more delicious, because veals are raised free-range to eat grass and other kinds of forest leafs, so their meat are sweet-smelling, moreover, they are processed by chefs to become dishes like smoked veal mixed with fried rice powder, smoked veal with green banana, sour star fruit, kinds of fines herbs, drinking with cold fresh beer or some cups of Kim Long rice wine will be wonderful.

BUFFALO MEAT WITH “TRƠƠNG” LEAF

This dish is made from young buffalo meat, processed into stir-fried, steamed, baked dishes, especially together with “Trơơng” leaf - a kind of tree which has leaf with thorn that is uncultivated in Quang Tri mountain area. Young leaf has sweet and typical hot smell. Currently, buffalo meat is a specility that tourists can not forget when visiting Huong Hoa- Lao Bao.

SA CHITTERLING GRUEL

Sa chitterling or also called Tha chitterling due to primary feature of this spice. Normally, people use pig blood or duck blood, pour into the pot of water, add spices, release chitterling into the boiled oi when the pot is boiled carefully, ladle into a bowl. This kind of gruel must have a little bit of well-cooked rice and green bean, have both plain chitterling and group chitterling.

BANH CANH GRUEL (VAT GIUONG GRUEL)

Banh canh gruel or also called Vat Giuong gruel or Powder gruel. The name is due to the main material to make the gruel is fried rice powder put into boiled water, arrange into each thin piece, cut into long bar like bamboo bed bar. Powder cooked with snake-head. Snake head is carefully processed, then fried with flat and onion for absorbing spice, then poured into boiled water pol then releasing rice straw into the pot, add onion and coriander, chili and peper. Banh canh gruel is wel-known all over Quang Tri, but the most delicious gruel must be in Dien Sanh commune, Hai Lang district.

GLUTINOUS RICE CAKE

Glutinous rice cake is very carefully made by Quang Tri people. In order to have a fragrant and soft cake, not only sweet but also eye-catching, require very skilful hands of maker. Before, people only make cake in Tet holiday, but at present, to meet the demand of tourists, cakes are sold everywhere in the province.

TAPIOCA CAKE

This kind of cake is made by tapioca powder, filterd to get starch, then boiled a small part, kneaded carefully to make cake. The filling of cake is usually made by shrimp mixing with spices (in some areas filling is made by big pulp or combination of shrimp-pork). After pulling into cake, the cake is packed by banana leaf and steamed in a bain marie. This is a popular dish in Quang Tri as well as in other central provinces.

PLAIN TICE PLAN CAKE WITH GRACILARIA

Sticking on seaside rock, gracilarioa looks like a brown dodder co top of each thread coil like a fishhook. May be the name gracilaria is based on that shape. With the cool, sweet and soft features, this kind of gracilaria is usually processed to make plain rice flan cake with gracilaria by seamen. After being cleaned, gracilaria is well boilded and poured by each cup on edible leaves or into mould. The sweet taste and cool fragrant smell of cake supports much for digestion. This speciality is available in Cua Tung, Vinh Thai beach, Vinh Linh district.

WATERSCREW

Waterscrew is planted mostly in Hao Son village, on terraced fields crossing narrow valley which are always irrigated by water from ancient wells. Formely, waterscrew was used to serve kings and courtess.

Waterscrew is a clean vegetable, can be processed to many delicious dishes like salad, stir-frying with beet sweet and sour grated salad... popular with many people

JACKFRUIT SALAD

Jackfruit is a kind of fruit that has been welknown for long time of Vietnamese. Beside eating ripe jackfruit, in some areas people use young jackfruit to make jackfruit salad, among these is Quang Tri’s people. Green young jackfruit is cut into thin slices and soaked in weak solution of salt and water, then quickly boiled to reduce acerbity. After that, jackfruit is mixed with sliced pork, added with herbs, roasted peanut, fish sauce... eating with flapjack is very wonderful.

Present at the workshop were representatives of the provincial bodies and agencies, business associations and SMEs of the two provinces. The participants of Quang Tri province were from the Office of Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, Department of Industry and Trade, Department of Planning and Investment, Provincial Economic Zone Management Board, Provincial Business Association and numerous leading SMEs.

The main objective of the workshop was to enhance SME’s competitiveness along East-West Economic Corridors through business database and e-commerce development.

At the end of the workshop, the participants discussed to develop draft action plans for the registration in and collection of data for the Database.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Nguyen Huu Dung, Vice Chairman of Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, affirmed that Quang Tri holds a lot of advantages for economic, trade, tourism and investment cooperation and development in the region, particularly with countries in the ASEAN and the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS).

Mr Nguyen Huu Dung explained that the Dong Nam Economic Zone of Quang Tri province was approved by the Prime Minister of Vietnam and many important projects were considered for approval, including a US$2.26-billion 1,200-MW thermal plant invested by EGAT International Company of Thailand and the VND13-trillion My Thuy Port which caught the fancy of South Korean investors.

Besides, the Government agreed to add Quang Tri province to the central key economic zone and Lao Bao International Border Gate to the list of nine key border gate economic zones. Earlier, the Prime Minister decided to upgrade the La Lay National Border Gate into La Lay International Border Gate to open up a new way to develop investment, trade and tourism from Northeast Thailand.

Besides, when a 70-km highway that links La Lay International Border Gate and My Thuy Port is opened, it will open up a huge development advantage for the province, he added.

The first Quang Tri Investment and Tourism Promotion Conference will open up big opportunities and send attractive invitations for domestic and foreign investors and enterprises seeking to invest in Quang Tri. Attendants to the conference will be invited to visit local economic and industrial zones and explore investment potential and opportunities in the province.

Mr Shimon Tokuyama, Chairman of the Japan Business Association in Vietnam, said that Vietnam's fast-growing economy is expected to be given a strong boost by a number of recently signed free trade agreements (FTAs). This is also a reason for more foreign companies in general and Japanese firms in particular to expand investment in Vietnam. However, the biggest difficulty to Japanese companies in Vietnam is complicated administrative procedures, he said. Hence, administrative procedure simplification is what foreign companies want to see when they invest in Vietnam.

Regarding the call for more Japanese business presences in Quang Tri province, Mr Shimon Tokuyama introduced some investment contents, requirements and forms of Japanese investors in Quang Tri province. He also recommended that Quang Tri highlight unique comparative advantages and provide investment materials in Japanese language to enhance its allure to Japanese investors.

Mr Hong Sun, General Secretary of the Korea Chamber of Business in Hanoi (KORCHAM), said South Korea and Japan are now leading investors in Vietnam. More than 4,500 South Korean investors are investing in over 5,000 projects in Vietnam, mainly specialising in labour-intensive industries like garment and textile, handbag and electronics. Central Vietnam, where Quang Tri is, is a favourite destination of South Korean investors. He pledged to send sufficient information of Quang Tri’s investment potential and advantages to South Korean investors.

Mr Pham Quang Thinh, Deputy Director of VCCI International Relations Department, said that, to help Quang Tri province boost investment attraction and make a progress in development cooperation with foreign localities and businesses, the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) will serve as a bridge to bring foreign companies to the province to look into investment policies and explore investment and business opportunities. He suggested that Quang Tri host a specific meeting with Japanese and South Korean investors in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to work on long-term cooperation.
