“Differing origins and social status did not diminish anyone’s dignity or exclude anyone from belonging to the People of God. The Christian community is thus a place of communion lived in the love shared among brothers and sisters,” he explained. The Good News of Jesus Christ is “capable of redeeming human relationships, including those between slaves and masters, by shedding light on what both have in common: adoptive sonship and the bond of brotherhood in Christ,” the pontiff said. He cited Jesus’ words in the Gospel of John: “No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” Pope Francis praised the “enormous and often silent efforts” to support victims of slavery and trafficking, especially the efforts of women’s religious congregations who provide psychological and educational rehabilitation for victims and work to reintegrate them into their home society. “These institutes work in very difficult situations, dominated at times by violence, as they work to break the invisible chains binding victims to traffickers and exploiters,” he said. The Pope cited the example of St. Josephine Bakhita, a nineteenth-century Sudanese woman who was kidnapped into slavery and endured brutal masters beginning at the age of nine years old. “Subsequently – as a result of painful experiences – she became a ‘free daughter of God’ thanks to her faith, lived in religious consecration and in service to others, especially the most lowly and helpless. “This saint, who lived at the turn of the twentieth century, is even today an exemplary witness of hope for the many victims of slavery; she can support the efforts of all those committed to fighting against this ‘open wound on the body of contemporary society, a scourge upon the body of Christ’.”

For a man who says so much, Pope Francis values the art of silence and discernment. He begins his day at 4:45 AM with at least an hour of silent prayer. Silence gives birth to a relationship with God and allows us to take the time to notice God in every person’s life. Francis says it well: God is in every person’s life. God is in everyone’s life. Even if the life of a person has been a disaster, even if it is destroyed by vices, drugs or anything else—God is in this person’s life. You can, you must try to seek God in every human life. Although the life of a person is a land full of thorns and weeds, there is always a space in which the good seed can grow. You have to trust God. 2. Find joy and share it with others. Too many people’s lives, Pope Francis says, “are like Lent without Easter….Sometimes we are tempted to find excuses and complain, acting as if we could only be happy if a thousand conditions were met.” But the truth is: the seeds of joy are all around us. Simple joy can come from knowing that God never tires of loving us and accompanying us along the way of life. It comes from knowing—despite it all—we have a life and a future in 2015. When we experience this joy of being loved and of having a future, we can’t help but share it. Joy is a gift that must be shared. And when we share joy, we attract other people—all kinds of people. This—in fact—is the greatest gift of sharing joy: we become people who are willing to engage, encounter, and befriend anyone.
Pope Francis says we must encounter “everyone without exception….But to whom should she go first? When we read the Gospel we find a clear indication: not so much our friends and wealthy neighbours, but above all the poor and the sick, those who are usually despised and overlooked.” This year offers us the opportunity to divest ourselves of the gilded things in our lives that exclude us from others. Too many times we get caught up in a web of obsessions born of an obstinate need to have more and to be more, but Francis calls to step outside ourselves, to end the narcissism that enslaves us and to encounter those whom we have excluded from full participation in human society. And when we approach the poor, we must end the ego-driven desire to serve them and to speak for them. The era of “voice for the voiceless” is over. Everyone has a voice. And we must encounter it. There’s been a lot of talk in the past two years about what Pope Francis wants to change in the Church and in society. Bureaucratic failures, financial corruption, and wayward shepherds often dominate the conversation. But in the final analysis, it’s us that the Bishop of Rome wants to change. Big heartedness, sharing joy and becoming poor for the poor—these things might not help you lose 10 pounds, but they will make our hurting nation and world more just and less cold. Đó là tựa đề một video clip ngắn đăng tải trên Youtube ngày 22-12-2014 được lan truyền một cách nhanh chóng khi chỉ trong 2 ngày đã có tới hơn 10 triệu người xem. Tác giả video clip này là Josh Paler Lin. Lin nói rằng anh đã bí mật làm một cuộc thử nghiệm để tìm kiếm câu trả lời cho câu hỏi "chuyện gì sẽ xảy ra nếu đưa tiền cho một người vô gia cư". Để trả lời câu hỏi này, Josh Paler Lin - một công dân rất trẻ của thành phố Anaheim, bang California - đã tặng một người đàn ông vô gia cư 100 Mỹ kim và bí mật theo dõi xem ông ấy sẽ làm gì với số tiền vừa mới nhận được. Người đàn ông vô gia cư tên Thomas tỏ ra ngạc nhiên trước hành động của Josh Paler Lin và giải thích một cách đơn sơ rằng anh ta chỉ cần đủ thực phẩm mà thôi. Tuy nhiên Josh Paler Lin vẫn trao 100 USD cho Thomas làm người đàn ông vô gia cư này cảm động không thể nói nên lời. Sau đó, Josh Paler Lin bí mật theo dõi người đàn ông với camera ẩn dấu và những hình ảnh thu được từ camera làm anh vô cùng xúc động. 
Người đàn ông vô gia cư đã bước vào một cửa hàng bách hóa và trở ra với một túi đầy thực phẩm. Sau đó ông ta đi đến một công viên và chia số thực phẩm vừa mua gồm khoai tây chiên, bánh và nhiều thứ khác nữa cho những người vô gia cư khác với lời chúc “Happy holiday”. Theo dõi diễn biến câu chuyện, Josh Paler Lin quyết định đến gặp Thomas và nói rõ sự thật câu chuyện. "Tôi cảm thấy thiếu nợ ông một lời xin lỗi. Đáng ra ông phải được đến cửa hàng sớm hơn. Ông đã làm tim tôi rung động (touch may heart)”, anh nói và tặng Thomas thêm một 100 Mỹ kim nữa. Josh Paler Lin còn lắng nghe câu chuyện của người đàn ông vô gia cư đã trở nên tay trắng như thế nào."Tôi từng sống với cha mẹ. Bố dượng của tôi bị ung thư. After approaching the man named Thomas in the street, Josh hands over the cash to Thomas' obvious delight. He describes the gift as "incredible" before giving Josh, a hug and going on his way. At this point Josh, who has his own YouTube channel, follows Thomas - secretly filming his every move to see where he goes, and things don't look good when he appears to head straight for a liquor store. But Josh tells his cameraman to "keep filming" - and is stunned by what happens next. Thomas comes out of the store with a heavy bag, and crosses the road to a group of other homeless people. There he pulls food he has just bought from the shop out of his bag and, in an act of touching generosity, shares it with other people living on the street this Christmas. Bowled over by his kindness Josh runs over to Thomas, tells him they've been filming him the whole time, and asks why he thought of others instead of himself. Thomas selflessly replies: "There's things money can't buy. I get a happiness out of what I'm doing." He goes on to tell how he ended up on the streets after giving up his job to care for his step-dad while he had cancer. Just two weeks after his death, Thomas' mother also passed away and the building where the three of them lived was sold, leaving him homeless.
