(Galati 6:1-5) “Hỡi anh em, ví bằng có người nào tình cờ phạm lỗi gì, anh em là kẻ có Đức Thánh Linh, hãy lấy lòng mềm mại mà sửa họ lại; chính mình anh em lại phải giữ, e cũng bị dỗ dành chăng. 2 Hãy mang lấy gánh nặng cho nhau, như vậy anh em sẽ làm trọn luật pháp của Đấng Christ. 3 Vì, nếu có ai, dầu mình không ra chi hết, mà cũng tưởng mình ra chi ấy là mình dối lấy mình. 4 Mỗi người phải thử xét việc làm của mình, thì sự khoe mình chỉ tại mình thôi, chớ chẳng phải tại kẻ khác. 5 Vì ai sẽ gánh lấy riêng phần nấy. 6 Kẻ nào mà người ta dạy đạo cho, phải lấy trong hết thảy của cải mình mà chia cho người dạy đó. 7 Chớ hề dối mình; Đức Chúa Trời không chịu khinh dể đâu; vì ai gieo giống chi, lại gặt giống ấy. 8 Kẻ gieo cho xác thịt, sẽ bởi xác thịt mà gặt sự hư nát; song kẻ gieo cho Thánh Linh, sẽ bởi Thánh Linh mà gặt sự sống đời đời. 9 Chớ mệt nhọc về sự làm lành, vì nếu chúng ta không trễ nải, thì đến kỳ chúng ta sẽ gặt. 10 Vậy, đang lúc có dịp tiện, hãy làm điều thiện cho mọi người, nhất là cho anh em chúng ta trong đức tin.” (Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. 2 Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard to another. 5 For each one will bear his own load. 6 The one who is taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him. 7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. 10 So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.) I. Review We are still in the spirit of the Vietnamese New Year, called Tet, so this morning I want us to continue focusing on the theme of renewal, with a question - “How can our church continue to be renewed, and growing this year?” (Vẫn còn trong tinh thần của Năm Mới, Ăn Tết, sáng nay tôi mong chúng ta tiếp tục suy gẫm đến chủ đề đổi mới, và câu hỏi để chúng ta suy gẫm đó là “Làm thế nào để Hội Thánh ở đây tiếp tục được phát triển trong năm mới này?) As I shared with the church in early Bible studies and sermon, to be renewed, our mind must first be changed, our attitudes must be adjusted, and today we will learn our behavior toward others must be confirmed through good works. (Tâm trí trước tiên cần được đổi mới, thái độ cần được điều chỉnh lại, và hôm nay chúng ta sẽ học hiểu bước thứ ba trong sự đổi mới là cách ăn nết ở, cách cư xử của chúng ta đối với những người xung quanh cần phải được chứng nhận bằng những việc lành.) 1) First, our mind is renewed by the Holy Spirit, Who resides inside each Christian, to change our mind and our attitudes by the Word of God and by the conviction of the heart in according to the wills of God. (Thứ nhất, tâm trí bên trong cần được đổi mới bởi quyền năng của Chúa Thánh Linh qua chính lời Kinh Thánh, khi chúng ta nghe, hiểu được lẽ thật, lòng được cảm động và sự suy nghĩ bên trong được thay đổi theo ý Chúa.) There are basically 3 types of Christians going to churches. (Có 3 nhóm người cơ đốc chính đi nhà thờ). The first kind of Christians come, but do not hear anything because their minds are being pre-occupied with so many worldly things, blocking what they have heard (Loại thứ nhất đến nhà thờ nhưng chẳng nghe chi hết, vì tâm trí của họ đang bị chiếm nghự bởi nhiều điều thuộc của thế gian này); The second kind of Christians come, hear but do not understand the truths, because in their mind still has full of reasons and excuses to accept that their existing ways of life do not need to change anything (Loại thứ hai đến nghe nhưng trong lòng vẫn còn đầy những lý do bào chữa và tự nghĩ tôi không cần thay đổi chi hết); but the third kind of Christians come, hear the truths, have the conviction of the heart to repent, meaning to change their mind, so that their ways of life can be re-aligned (làm thẳng lại) with God’s commandments and Jesus’ teachings (nhưng nhóm người thứ ba đi nhà thờ, nghe, lòng bị cáo trách với sự cam kết làm thẳng lại nếp sống của mình theo lời dạy dỗ của Chúa). This third kind of Christians is illustrated by Jesus in the parable of “The Sower and the Seeds” as the good soil, in which later produces fruits of 30, 60, and 100 folds, as in Matthew 13:23 – (And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.) (Nhóm người tín hữu thứ ba này được Chúa Giê-su diễn tả trong ẩn dụ “Người Gieo Giống” như là “đất tốt,” sẽ sanh trái 30, 60, và 100 – “Song, kẻ nào chịu lấy hột giống nơi đất tốt, tức là kẻ nghe đạo và hiểu; người ấy được kết quả đến nỗi một hột ra một trăm, hột khác sáu chục, hột khác ba chục.” Why there are some people who claim themselves Christians, going to church every week, but their lifestyle is still the same, as those who live liked the enemies of the cross? (Tại sao có những người xưng là tín đồ, đi nhà thờ mỗi tuần, nhưng nếp sống vẫn chưa thay đổi, vẫn sống như những “kẻ thù của thập tự gía?”) Because they go to church outside, but the inside mind and attitudes have not been renewed by the Holy Spirit. (Lý do là vì họ đi nhà thờ bên ngoài, nhưng bên trong tâm trí và thái độ bên trong vẫn chưa được đổi mới bởi Thánh Linh Chúa). Do you come to church each Sunday with any convictions in your heart that your ways of your life must be adjusted, or you just come to church as a routine religious thing (thói quen của tôn giáo) you have to do each week? (Bạn đi nhà thờ có sự cáo trách trong lòng điều chi mình cần điều chỉnh không, hay bạn đi nhà thờ mỗi Chúa Nhật chỉ là một thói quen của tôn giáo?) Do you feel any repentance when you study the Bible, listening to sermons? Does it compel you to make any changes, or do you feel that I have nothing that needs to be corrected? (Khi bạn học Kinh Thánh, nghe giảng, lòng có bị thúc đẩy cần thay đổi gì không, hay cảm thấy chẳng có điều chi mình cần điều chỉnh?) Sometimes I feel that the church just needs to stop all the sermons, Bible studies, all the activities, and what we really need is for everyone to get down on our knees to pray, seeking God and repent? (Đôi khi tôi nghĩ chúng ta cần ngừng mọi sinh hoạt của Hội Thánh, chỉ để mọi người quì gối, cầu nguyện, ăn năn và tìm kiếm Chúa là điều cần làm nhất?) Why the churches are not growing? (Tại sao Hội Thánh ngày nay nói chung không tăng trưởng?) Not because we are lacking of resources, or technologies (look around you, our church is almost hi-techs), but because the people come to church (you & me) do not have any conviction to make any changes (Không phải bởi vì chúng ta thiếu tài nguyên, kỹ thuật, nhưng là chúng ta thiếu sự khao khát, cáo trách muốn được thay đổi.) Remember God does not impress with our technologies, but He does touch by a repented heart. (Nhớ rằng Chúa không có cảm động bởi những kỹ thuật hay chúng ta có đâu, nhưng là một tấm lòng thống hối ăn năn tìm cầu Ngài). God is impressed with those who come to Him and say: “I am really sorry Lord, that I disobeyed You. I have been acting in my own wills and ways. Please forgive me, and help me to know and live in Your wills again.” (Chúa cảm kích khi một linh hồn đến với Chúa thành thật ăn năn, xưng tội và đầu phục Ngài) # Psalms 51:16-17 expresses David’s contrite heart of his sins that God is impressed – (For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.) (Chính Đavít ngày xưa bày tỏ tấm lòng này mà Chúa cảm kích – “Vì Chúa không ưa thích của lễ, bằng vậy, tôi chắc đã dâng; Của lễ thiêu cũng không đẹp lòng Chúa: 17 Của lễ đẹp lòng Đức Chúa Trời, ấy là tâm thần đau thương: Đức Chúa Trời ôi! lòng đau thương thống hối Chúa không khinh dể đâu.” Why do churches in America have not experienced the revival for a long time? Because we don’t feel like we need one. There is no conviction for the need of a revival. (Tại sao Hội Thánh của Chúa ở Hoa-kỳ này nói chung chưa kinh nghiệm sự phục hưng? Lý do là bởi vì chúng ta không thấy cần nên có sự phục hưng.) 2) Not just our mind needing to be changed; secondly, our attitudes must be adjusted. (Không phải tâm trí chúng ta cần thay đổi thôi, nhưng còn là thái độ nữa). What is the definition of the word “attitude?” (Định nghĩa “thái độ” là gì?). My definition is a “fixed perspective” (cái nhìn cố định) you have about a person or a situation. (Tôi định nghĩa là một cái nhìn cố định trong long về một người hay hoàn cảnh nào đó). This perspective can be developed and fixed by what you have fed your mind with, either through Internet, movies, video games, music, friendship opinions, politics or the Bible. (Thái độ được phát triển của một người tùy theo những gì người đó đang nuôi tâm trí của mình với những điều thuộc thế gian hay lời Kinh Thánh). Remember the basic concept of “garbage in, then garbage out.” And if we are not careful, the garbage will fix our perspective, and drifted us away from the truths, to the point that we see sins are ok things to do. (Bạn còn nhớ quan niệm “Rác vào thì rác ra” không? Nếu chúng ta không cẩn thẩn thì những “rác rến” ở đời này sẽ kéo chúng ta xa lẽ thật đến một ngày chúng ta xem tội lỗi như là những việc làm bình thường). a) Living together without marriage is nothing wrong, because everybody does that on TV, then it should be ok, right? (Sống với nhau không cần cưới hỏi là điều tự nhiên chăng?) b) Cheating on taxes is nothing wrong, because this is the way I can fairly get back to the government who steals my money, right? (Trốn thuế để trả đuã lại chính phủ là điều công bình chăng?) c) Homosexual and abortion are nothing wrong, because this is the subject of the individual freedom of choice, and no one has any right to discuss, right? (Viện đồng tính luyến ái hay phá thai là quyền tự do cá nhân chăng?) d) Living a double life (Sống 2 con người): going to church every Sunday, but going home being cruel to your wife, husband, children, and parents, ok right? (Sống 2 con người, đi nhà thờ mỗi Chúa Nhật, về nhà đối xử tệ bạc với người trong gia đình là điều không ai được xía vào?) e) Gossiping is the joy of life, and a way to get even with my neighbors, right? (Nói xấu người khác là điều tự nhiên để tôi đối xử với người khác tôi không thích chăng?) f) I do not smoke, I do not drink, but it’s ok for me to sell cigarettes and alcohol to others to drink, right? (Tự nghĩ tôi không hút thuốc, không uống rượu, nhưng tôi bán thuốc và rượu đâu có gì sai vì đó chỉ là nghề nghiệp mà thôi chăng?) The worst thing is when these attitudes become “hard concrete,” and fixed in our mind, that they are very difficult to break; and the only way is through the power of the Holy Spirit to make conviction of the heart and brings us to repentance. (Điều tệ hại nhất là khi những thái độ này trở nên “xi-măng” buộc chặt tâm trí của một người đến giai đoạn không thể bỏ được, mà chỉ nhờ cậy quyền năng của Thần Linh Chúa cáo trách và dẫn đến sự ăn năn mà thôi). Isn’t that what the Holy Spirit will do as mentioned in John 16:7-8 – (But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment;) (Đây chính là vai trò của Thánh Linh làm – “Dầu vậy, ta nói thật cùng các ngươi: Ta đi là ích lợi chocác ngươi; vì nếu ta không đi, Đấng Yên ủi sẽ không đến cùng các ngươi đâu; song nếu ta đi, thì ta sẽ sai Ngài đến. 8 Khi Ngài đến thì sẽ khiến thế gian tự cáo về tội lỗi, về sự công bình và về sự phán xét.” II. Lifestyle is Re-aligned Toward Others Thirdly, our life must be re-aligned (đổi hướng) toward others, if our mind has been changed and our attitudes have been adjusted. (Không phải vậy thôi, nhưng nếp sống của chúng ta cần phải được đổi hướng, nếu tâm trí đã được đổi mới và thái độ đã được điều chỉnh lại). The basic of this behavioral re-alignment is the love for others, more than the love for self. (Điều căn bản của sự đổi hướng này là sự yêu thương người khác, chứ không còn chỉ cho riêng mình). What is the second most important commandment? It is to love others as yourself. (Điều răn quan trọng thứ hai là gì? Yêu kẻ lân cận như chính mình). In Matthew 22:39 – (The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’) “Còn điều răn thứ hai đây, cũng như vậy: Ngươi hãy yêu kẻ lân cận như mình.” This is not self-love, but the object (đối tượng) is loving others. (Đây không phải là tình yêu ích kỷ, nhưng là loại yêu thương mà đối tượng là “người bên kia.”) Selfishness is the greatest enemy that destroys spiritual growth of a Christian, the happiness in a family, and unity of the church; Selfishness is stink, but everyone seems to like it. (Ích kỷ là điều tồi tệ/hôi thúi, nhưng hình như ai cũng thích hết) We must be changed to have the same mind and attitude (tâm trí) of Jesus, that does not focus on self, but others. (Chúng ta cầm mặc lấy tâm trí và thái độ của Chúa Giê-su là điều luôn nhắm đến người khác). In Philippians 2:4-8 – (Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; 4 do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. 5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.) “Mỗi người trong anh em chớ chăm về lợi riêng mình, nhưng phải chăm về lợi kẻ khác nữa. 5 Hãy có đồng một tâm tình như Đấng Christ đã có, 6 Ngài vốn có hình Đức Chúa Trời, song chẳng coi sự bình đẳng mình với Đức Chúa Trời là sự nên nắm giữ; 7 chính Ngài đã tự bỏ mình đi, lấy hình tôi tớ và trở nên giống như loài người; 8 Ngài đã hiện ra như một người, tự hạ mình xuống, vâng phục cho đến chết, thậm chí chết trên cây thập tự.” Jesus was completely being obedient and submissive to the Father, not to Himself. (Chúa Giê-su vâng phục Chúa Cha trọn vẹn, không làm vừa lòng mình). He came to this world with only purposes were to reveal the Father and to complete the mission that the Father had sent Him to do. (Ngài đến không ngoài mục đích để khải thị Đức Chúa Trời và làm trọn sứ mạng Cha Ngài đã trao cho). Just think if everybody in this church would forget self, and focus on others, then how VHBC will be, how every families of this church will be, how much impacts VHBC members will make a difference in this city? What does it mean to love others? (Yêu kẻ lân cận nghĩa là sao?) a) First, love must come from the sincere heart, and not just to a show-off outside. (Tình yêu thương phải thành thật, phát xuất từ bên trong, chứ không phải là để khoe mình bên ngoài). God hates hypocrites, meaning those who wear masks from outside, but the real fear is knowing that God looks into the heart and knew everything even other people around us do not know. (Chúa rất ghét sự gỉa hình; sự kính sợ nhất không phải là sợ thiên hạ chưa biết những điều bí ẩn trong lòng mình, nhưng là Chúa biết tất cả về mình). The real fear is not what things in our life that others have not yet known, but fear God Who knows everything about us. Love others is not 50/50 like “you scratch my back and I scratch yours,” but it is 100/100 and unconditionally. (Tình yêu thành thật không phải là loại “có qua có lại,” nhưng là không điều kiện) b) Secondly, love must be practical, and not just words coming out from our mouth. (Tình yêu thương phải thực tế và rõ ràng). In 1 John 3:18 – (Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.) “Hỡi các con cái bé mọn, chớ yêu mến bằng lời nói và lưỡi, nhưng bằng việc làm và lẽ thật.” Love must be transparent, because the people don’t care what we say, until they see what we have done to care. (Tình yêu thương bày tỏ thì phải thấy được, bởi vì thiên hạ sẽ không cần biết chúng ta nói gì, giảng gì, cho đến khi họ thấy chúng ta đã làm gì) c) Love means doing good to others (Tình yêu thương kẻ lân cận nghĩa là làm điều lành cho họ) – “Vậy, đang lúc có dịp tiện, hãy làm điều thiện cho mọi người, nhất là cho anh em chúng ta trong đức tin.” (So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.) We are commanded to do good, and this is not an option. We are saved by grace to do good. (Nhớ rằng làm việc lành không phải là sự lựa chọn tùy ý, nhưng là một mạng lệnh của Chúa; chúng ta được cứu để làm lành). In Ephesians 2:10 – (For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.) “vì chúng ta là việc Ngài làm ra, đã được dựng nên trong Đức Chúa Jêsus Christ để làm việc lành mà Đức Chúa Trời đã sắm sẵn trước cho chúng ta làm theo.” III. Examples of Doing Good What are some examples of doing good? (Vài thí dụ của sự làm lành) 1) First, we all have the ability to do good, because we are being created “new” in Christ Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit resides inside each of us. (Chúng ta có khả năng làm lành là vì được dựng nên “mới” trong Cứu Chúa Giê-su và Thần Linh của Ngài ngự trị torng tâm hồn chúng ta). In 2 Corinthians 5:17 - (Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.) “Vậy, nếu ai ở trong Đấng Christ, thì nấy là người dựng nên mới; những sự cũ đã qua đi, nầy mọi sự đều trở nên mới.” If we allow the Holy Spirit to control (tể trị) our life, our emotion (cảm xúc), our attitude, then we can do good; if not we keep on doing bad because our heart is evil, as Jesus said in Matthew 15:19 – (For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.) (Nếu chúng ta để Thánh Linh tể trị đời sống, cảm xúc, thái độ của mình thì chúng ta làm lành được; nếu không chúng ta tự động làm ác, vì bản chất tự nhiên của con người là ác - “Vì nơi lòng mà ra những ác tưởng, những tội giết người, tà dâm, dâm dục, trộm cướp, làm chứng dối, và lộng ngôn.”). Sprite drink has a commercial – “Is it in you?” (Năng lực có ở trong bạn không?) Is the power of the Holy Spirit in you? The real problem is not whether the power of the Holy Spirit is in us, but the real problem is do we allow the Holy Spirit to control us? (Vần đề năng lực của Thánh Linh có ở trong chúng ta hay không tùy theo chúng ta có để Thần Linh Chúa điều khiển mình không) 2) v. 1 gives us an example of doing good (Câu 1 cho thí dụ của một việc lành) – (Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.) “Hỡi anh em, ví bằng có người nào tình cờ phạm lỗi gì, anh em là kẻ có Đức Thánh Linh, hãy lấy lòng mềm mại mà sửa họ lại; chính mình anh em lại phải giữ, e cũng bị dỗ dành chăng.” When you see a child about crossing a busy street, what will you do? (Bạn sẽ làm gì khi thấy một đứa bé sắp sửa chạy qua đường có đông xe cộ đi lại?) You would not hesitate to help the helpless child, wouldn’t you? That is our nature, our instinct to rescue the helpless. (Bạn sẽ không trì hoãn chút nào vì bản tánh tự nhiên của chúng ta là cứu kẻ bất thế?) What about when we see our brother or sister in Christ is falling deep in sin? (Còn khi thấy anh chị em mình trong Chúa đang sa ngã trong tội lỗi, chúng ta làm gì?) It takes a special kind of love to jump in and help, because they are your brothers and sisters. (Nó đòi hỏi một tình yêu thương cao đẹp từ Chúa thì mới có thể làm được) But doing good is more than just doing it, but all about how to do it; if not you will make it worse, and not helping. (Nhớ rằng làm lành không phải chỉ làm thôi, nhưng cách làm như thế nào). The key word here is “gentleness” in doing it. (Điểm chính là ở chữ “mềm mại.”) Many times I think we give counsels, corrections, but it’s not “gentle,” and therefore it did not help, but it made worse, hurting someone’s feeling, even though we didn’t mean it. (Đôi khi chúng ta sửa dạy nhau, nhưng không có “mềm mại” mà gây thêm khó khăn, mặc dầu chúng ta vô tình không muốn như vậy) Some checks that we all must do: (Vài điều cần tự xét khi làm lành). a) Self-check yourself to make sure the things you correct others are not the same things you are doing them now, just in different forms. (Tự xét coi xem chính mình có đang làm những điều (bằng hình thức khác mà thôi) mình đang muốn sửa dạy người khác?) We say “Mr. so and so should not cheat in taxes, but you yourself have not tithed to God’s church?” (Chẳng hạn như mình trách người khác trốn thuế, nhưng tự chính mình chưa dâng hiến trọn phần cho Chúa?) If we correct someone something, but we may be doing it, then it makes us to become a hypocrite, right? (Nếu chúng ta sửa phạt người khác mà chính mình cũng đang làm việc đó thì chúng ta trở nên những kẻ gỉa hình?) Self-check will help us to have a humble and gentle spirit in correcting, helping others, knowing that we can be tempted just like them. (Tinh thần khiêm nhường tự xét lấy chính mình gíup chúng ta có thái độ mềm mại trong sự sửa phạt người khác) b) Self-check your attitude. Why am I doing this? Is it motivated (thúc đẩy) by love? Is it with a pure purpose of restoration. and not destroying? (Tự xét thái độ của mình là có muốn xây dựng hàn gắn trong sự sửa phạt họ không hay là muốn phá đổ? Nếu không hàn gắn được thì “yên lặng” là hay nhất) c) Self-check your guts. (tự xét tấm long). Whose glory that I am doing this for? Is it so that you can compare with others and look better, or all for the glory of God? (Coi xem mình làm lành để làm chi, cho sự vinh hiển của ai, mà không nên so sánh nhau?) In vs. 3-4 – the apostle Paul said - (For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4 But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone, and not in regard (compare) to another.) “Vì, nếu có ai, dầu mình không ra chi hết, mà cũng tưởng mình ra chi ấy là mình dối lấy mình. 4 Mỗi người phải thử xét việc làm của mình, thì sự khoe mình chỉ tại mình thôi, chớ chẳng phải tại kẻ khác.” Just do it! And do not compare yourself with anyone else. Two brothers worked together on the family farm. One was married and had a large family. (đông con) The other was single (độc thân). At the day’s end, the brothers shared everything equally, produce and profit. Then one day the single brother said to himself, “It’s not right that we should share equally (chia xẻ lợi tức bằng nhau) the produce and the profit. I’m alone and my needs are simple.” So each night he took a sack of grain (bao lúa) from his bin and crept (lặng lẽ trong ban đêm) across the field between their houses, dumping it into his brother’s bin (thùng). Meanwhile, the married brother said to himself, “It’s not right that we should share the produce and the profit equally. After all, I’m married and I have a wife and children to look after (chăm sóc khi về gía) me in years to come. My brother has no one, and no one to take care of his future.” So each night he took a sack of grain and dumped it into his single brother’s bin. Both men were puzzled (bối rối thắc mắc) for years because their supply of grain never dwindled. Then one dark night the two brothers bumped (đụng) into each other. My personal style is not the sermons with a lot of funny stories, poems, or histories, but the sermons that drill deep in my heart with a conviction I have to do something about it. It challenges me for a sincere self-examination leading to repentance, changing my mind, my attitude, and my behavior in doing good to others. We must repent, meaning the change of mind. We must make an adjustment of our attitudes according to the word of God. We must be doing good to others in the name of Christ, and no longer focusing just for self. Some of the examples we can do: 1) Restore (make corrections) those who are caught in sin with a spirit of gentleness. 2) Bearing one another’s burdens with a spirit of humility. 3) Sharing resources, the good things with your brothers and sisters in Christ. Sometimes, I exam my own life and feel kind of shameful someday, because I was so busy and did not have time to do good to my wife, children, parents, brothers and sisters in Christ? Not doing good to anyone without asking for a return favor? Not doing good to anyone in the name of Jesus.” Not an evil shame, but a good shame of a heart conviction to ask myself constantly – “Have I done any good things for others? Am I living for Jesus?” Just think what happens to VHBC if everyone will do this more to one another in 2015? Catch the opportunities to do good, because you may not have the second chance. May the Holy Spirit create in all of us a renewed heart, mind, and attitude that we always seek for opportunities to do good for others, so many will come to know God and be saved. Doing Good to Others (Galatians 6:1-10) The real question for us this New Year is the question “How can our church continue to be renewed and growing this year?” To be renewed, our mind must first be changed, our attitudes must be adjusted, and today we will learn our behavior toward others must be confirmed through good works. Our mind is renewed by the Holy Spirit, Who resides inside each Christian, to change our mind and our attitudes by the Word of God and by the conviction of the heart in according to the wills of God. Also, our life must be re-aligned toward others, if our mind has been changed and our attitudes have been adjusted. The basic of this behavioral re-alignment is the love for others, more than the love for self. Selfishness is the greatest enemy that destroys spiritual growth of a Christian, the happiness in a family, and unity of the church. We must be changed to have the same mind and attitude of Jesus that does not focus on self, but others. What does it mean to love others? First, love must come from the sincere heart, and not just to an outside show-off. Secondly, love must be transparent, because the people don’t care what we say, until they see what we have done to care. Thirdly, love means doing good to others. What are some examples of doing good? First, we all have the ability to do good, because we are being created “new” in Christ Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit resides inside each of us. One example of doing good is to restore a brother or sister falling in sin with a gentle spirit. Secondly, doing good is sharing the burdens together, and not abusing the Christian love.
