TO: Parents of Students Attending Insert school name
SUBJECT: Explanation and Description of Assessments
The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act requires all Title I schools to provide to parents a description and explanation of the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress. Below are various assessments that HISD and its schools use throughout the year. In addition, local assessments that are used at Insert school name to measure student progress are also included at the end of this letter.

Beginning in spring 2012, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). The STAAR program at grades 3–8 will assess the same subjects and grades that are currently assessed on TAKS. At the high school level, however, grade-specific assessments will be replaced with 12 end-of-course (EOC) assessments: Algebra I, geometry, Algebra II, biology, chemistry, physics, English I, English II, English III, world geography, world history, and U.S. history. In 2012, only currently classified 9th graders will take the EOC assessments. Students classified as 10th and 11th will take the TAKS test.

The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness Modified (STAAR™ Modified) will replace the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills–Modified (TAKS–M) beginning in the 2011–2012 school year for third through entering ninth grade students who meet the STAAR Modified participation requirements. STAAR Modified includes end-of-course assessments and new grades 3–8 assessments to be implemented in the 2011–2012 school year.
The Texas Education Agency (TEA) has developed the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness Alternate (STAAR™ Alternate) to meet the federal requirements mandated under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), a federal education law reauthorized as the No Child Left Behind law. STAAR Alternate is designed for the purpose of assessing students in grades 3–8 and high school who have significant cognitive disabilities and are receiving special education services.

Stanford 10 is a norm-referenced achievement test that measures students’ academic achievement in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social science.

Aprenda 3 is a norm-referenced achievement test for students whose primary language of instruction is Spanish. It measures students’ academic achievement in reading, language arts, mathematics, science, and social science.

TELPAS is designed to measure the English language proficiency of K–12 English Language Learners in four language areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Bắt đầu từ mùa xuân 2012, bài thi State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR™) sẽ thay thế bài thi Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS).

  • List the additional assessments used at the campus
