Opsonization of malaria-infected erythrocytes activates the inflammasome and enhances inflammatory cytokine secretion by human macrophages

Zhou J, Ludlow LE, Hasang W, Rogerson SJ and Jaworowski A Malaria Journal 2012, 11:343 (9 October 2012)

The paper investigates the responses of human macrophages to P. falciparum-infected erythrocytes, and their dependence on antibody opsonization. It shows that the antibody response to infection plays a role in generating a robust pro-inflammatory response.

Research

Feasibility and acceptability of insecticide-treated plastic sheeting (ITPS) for vector control in Papua New Guinea

Pulford J, Tandrapah A, Atkinson JA, Kaupa B, Russell T and Hetzel MW Malaria Journal 2012, 11:342 (9 October 2012)

A small but important study that has identified constraints on affixing insecticide-treated plastic sheeting inside different types of dwellings; various factors may impact ITPS durability, community perceptions and acceptability in different types of Papua New Guinean dwellings.

Finding parasites and finding challenges: improved diagnostic access and trends in reported malaria and anti-malarial drug use in Livingstone district, Zambia

Masaninga F, Sekeseke-Chinyama M, Malambo T, Moonga H, Babaniyi O, Counihan H and Bell D Malaria Journal 2012, 11:341 (8 October 2012)

RDT introduction led to a large decline in reported malaria cases and in ACT consumption in Livingstone district. However, the full potential of RDTs will only be realized when strategies can be put in place to better manage RDT-negative cases.

Research

Perceived malaria in the population of an urban setting: a skipped reality in Dakar, Senegal

Diallo A, Dos Santos S, Lalou R and Le Hesran JY Malaria Journal 2012, 11:340 (8 October 2012)

A study of the perceptions of malaria in an urban setting, after the implementation of measures that led to a decrease in malaria transmission: despite the decline of malaria, the population continues get anti-malarials directly at private pharmacies. The paper provides data on population health-seeking behaviour and on the poor use of diagnostic tools in the healthcare system in an urban area.

Research

Long-term storage limits PCR-based analyses of malaria parasites in archival dried blood spots

Hwang J, Jaroensuk J, Leimanis ML, Russell B, McGready R, Day N, Snounou G, Nosten F et al. Malaria Journal 2012, 11:339 (8 October 2012)

Investigation into the storage limit of the archived dried blood spots on filter papers, demonstrating elegantly that the recovery of DNA and the length of DNA recovered from these stored filter paper spots reduce with time due to gradual DNA degradation.

Research

Surveillance of the efficacy of artemetherlumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine for the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum among children under five in Togo, 2005-2009

Dorkenoo MA, Barrette A, Agbo YM, Bogreau H, Kutoati S, Sodahlon YK and Morgah K Malaria Journal 2012, 11:338 (8 October 2012)

The study reports the results of therapeutic efficacy studies conducted on artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine for the treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Togo.
