OPEN ACADEMY 2010
The following artists will participate in the project:
Nezaket Ekici was born in 1970 in Turkey and has lived in Germany since the age of three. She dedicated herself to art very early on and is now an internationally sought-after performance artist. Her own body is the center of her work and builds a dynamic connection with the audience. The question of one’s own identity, the skeptical confrontation with role models and conventions which define the female body, which submit to ethnic and political ideas, is thus from the very beginning a central theme in her work.

Stephan Kurr was born in 1961. He studied art in Kassel and Nürnberg. Prizes, grants and exhibitions, the typical artist career, formed his professional development in which specific questions crystallized. Since the 90’s themes like migration and economics are relevant and in this field of reference also the role and self-image of the artist. This analysis repeatedly results, in addition to the artistic production, in texts, curatorial work and initiatives. Among other places he has taught at the Kunstakademie Nürnberg and was guest professor a Concordia University Montreal. He has initiated artistic exchanges in Istanbul, Hanoi or Cali (Columbia). The various participatory aspects of his work are a result of the practice of teaching and art communication.

She curated several exhibitions of Vietnamese art in Germany (Museum für Lackkunst Münster, 1996 - Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin, 1998 – ifa-Galerie Berlin 2009/10). Her book “Sicherheitsabstand. Vietnam. Kunst. Politik. Freundschaften. Eine Annäherung” was published in 2005. In her work she combines language, drawing, photography, objects.
“… Her artistic method is dialogue… in changing environments she has not so much produced work, as studied situations in order to learn about peoples’ relationships, ways of communication, prejudices, fears and hopes. And then it happened that she transferred her impressions very directly into “art”…

Danh Vo

Quote about Danh Vo: (Gabriele Walde in WELT ONLINE – 22.09.09)

Danh Vo does not like to talk about himself or his art. In fact, it is not so easy even to meet the gentle Vietnamese artist (born 1975) in his studio in Kreuzberg, Berlin. Danh Vo is a very sought-after artist and is often traveling, and has just finished working on a grant in Paris. Two years ago he won the Blue Orange Prize of the Deutschen Volksbanken und Raiffeisenbanken, and his exhibition “Where the Lions are” in the Kunsthalle Basel just ended in August. He has been nominated for the National Gallery Prize. To understand his work, one needs to look at his earlier life. in 1980 he fled Vietnam with his parents and landed as a refugee in Denmark. He holds a Danish passport today.
At his age and with his experiences between worlds, he has without doubt experienced more than any European artist his age. That is not meant to sound cynical. But that is precisely what appears to be his artistic impulse. And so Danh Vo is somehow continually constructing his life as a biography. The gallerists who represent him value his authenticity. It is almost obvious that this does not result in smooth and easy art. The artist gathers more than he creates. Photos, documents, objects like old chandeliers or the door of a refrigerator and innumerable artifacts he arranges into installations odd and difficult to interpret, installations which do not make easy the observer’s confrontation with the work.
