A remarkable number of this research body focuses on the rhetorical structure in the introduction section of research articles in a number of disciplines and across languages. To the best of our knowledge, however, there are virtually no published genre-based contrastive studies into the same phenomenon in research article introductions (RAIs) of original applied linguistics papers in reputable English and Vietnamese-medium journals. This paper reports an exploratory analysis of the rhetorical structure deployed in a corpus of 10 applied linguistics RAIs in English and 10 applied linguistics RAIs in Vietnamese, with Swales’ Create A Research Space - CARS 1990 framework being the analytical tool. Results showed a divergence in the utilization of the rhetorical structure at the move level in RAIs between English native speaker authors and their Vietnamese counterparts. Besides its contribution to the accumulated knowledge base of genre analysis research in the ESP tradition, this finding is likely to be of practical value to applied linguistics novice writers who wish to get their papers published in either or both of the languages and also to teachers and learners in university-based advanced academic writing courses in Vietnam.
