In this paper, we presented the research results on the biodiversity of Vietnam achieved by IEBR in recent years. Several selected scientific works were published, including “Fauna and Flora of Vietnam”, “the Red Data Book of Vietnam”, “the Red List of Vietnam”, etc. There are 4.813 animal species belonging to 1.886 genera, 497 families and 5 divisions were recorded. There are 3.390 plant species (211 varieties), belonging to 640 genera, 57 families and 3 divisions (mostly in division Magnoliophyta with 3.177 species) were identified. 1.281 animal species and 236 plant species were described as new to science and new records for the fauna and flora of Vietnam. 834 animal species and 559 species of plants were recorded as endemic and sub-endemic to Vietnam.
Among animal species revealed, most are consideded as high biodiversity valued ones, they are served as food, bioindicators, ornamental animals and few are harmful species. Plant species provide wood, medicine, food, resin and oil, etc. There are 407 animal species and 448 plant species listed as Endangered (EN) in the Red Data Book of Vietnam.
