*Tóm tắt : A widespread sympathy for a neglected figure of seventeenthcentury science is being displaced by something more positivea mixture of astonishment at the extraordinary range and diversity of his talents, esteem for the originality and acumen of his science, admiration for his administrative capability and civic integrity, and fascination at the energy, emotion, and frailty evident in a life fully engaged with the world of Restoration London. Comparisons with his enemy Newton are giving way to an appreciation of Hooke on his own terms, passionately occupied with experiment, invention, argument, writing, teaching, and earning a living as a scientist in a competitive world .

Nhan đề: Engineering mathematics / by Harry Sohon
Số phân loại : 510 H109; Đặc điểm vật lý: vi, p. diagrs. 24 cm
*Tóm tắt : This book is intended for use as a supplemental tool for courses in engineering mathematics, applied ordinary and partial differential equations, vector analysis, applied complex analysis, and other advanced courses in which MAPLE is used. Each chapter has been written so that the material it contains may be covered in a typical laboratory session of about 11/2 to 2 hours. The goals for every laboratory are stated at the beginning of the chapter. Mathematical concepts are then discussed within a framework of abundant engineering applications and problemsolving techniques using MAPLE. Each chapter is also followed by a set of exploratory exercises that are intended to serve as a starting point for a student's mathematical experimentation. Since most of the exercises can be solved in more than one way, there is no answer key for either students or professors .

*Tóm tắt : As the title indicates, this text is intended for courses aimed at bridging the gap between lower level mathematics and advanced mathematics. The transition to advanced mathematics presented is discrete since continuous functions are not studied. The text provides a careful introduction to techniques for writing proofs and a logical development of topics based on intuitive understanding of concepts. The authors utilize a clear writing style and a wealth of examples to develop an understanding of discrete mathematics and critical thinking skills. Including more topics than can be covered in one semester, the text offers innovative material throughout, particularly in the last three chapters (e.g. Fibonacci Numbers and Pascal's Triangle). This allows flexibility for the instructor and the ability to teach a deeper, richer course .

*Tóm tắt : This was the text book that was used in a course I took in Finite Math. Do not waste your time or money on this book. It does not go into any depth whatsoever, many of the thereoms shown were just pulled out of the authors hat without any proof of any kind. I honestly, had a hard time staying awake as I would read it, since it is so dull. It places far too much emphasis on phony applications and almost known on good solid theory. I only wish I could give this book a negative rating .

*Tóm tắt : This book introduces basic proofwriting techniques, naive set theory, cardinality, functions, and also includes a very brief introduction to abstract algebra and real analysis. I thought that the section on proofs was quite well done even though there are better textbooks which cover this topic more extensively with more examples. The examples are generally simple and are pulled almost exclusively from number theory, but they provide understanding. The set theory chapter is not very rigorous, but it meets the goals of the type of student who would take such a class. A more rigorous (i.e. axiomatic) introduction to set theory would require an entire semester, and the goal of this book is simply to provide students with just enough tools to prepare themselves for classes like Abstract/Modern Algebra, Real Analysis, and Set Theory, but not much more. Also, I consider the proofs to be generally wellwritten although there are occasional mistakes .
