Topic 4 -> Theories of Regional and Local Development – Abridged Review -> page 87

  • Yes, it is possible. We can use development discourse, treated as a continuum of constant changes (appearing consequentially), creates an alternative path for the development of a region, an agglomeration, a centre or a commune, where the revalorization of the place (territory) and community (regional, urban and local) requires the potential for self-development, i.e. possibilities and abilities of self-organization, innovation potential and good economic conditions. Kaleta A. (1996) proposes the following indicators of the potential for development: living conditions, political engagement, territorial identity and social ties (the constitutive factor, but also the most difficult to quantify without the use of indirect indicators, such as local press, election attendance etc.)

19. Entrepreneurship and regional development – are they interrelated?

20. Schumpeterian approach to regional development – do we need innovation?

Topic 5: A review to a Schumpeters book -> p6, p144

  • The concept of ‘new combination’ is often associated with Schumpeter’s work and with his approach to economic development.

  • “This concept covers the following five cases: (1) The introduction of a new good – that is one with which consumers are not yet familiar – or a new quality of a good. (2) The introduction of a new method of production, that is one not yet tested by experience in the branch of manufacture concerned, which need by no means be founded upon a discovery scientifically new, and can also exist in a new way of handling a commodity commercially. (3) The opening of a new market, that is a market into which the particular branch of manufacture of the country in question has not previously entered, whether or not this market has existed before. (4) The conquest of a new source of supply or raw materials or half-manufactured goods, again irrespective of whether this source already exists or whether it has first to be created. (5) The carrying out of the new organization of any industry, like the creation of a monopoly position (for example through trustification) or the breaking up of a monopoly position.” (p 66)

-> Yes, we need innovation because: Entrepreneurial profit is the direct result of the activity of innovation and from this perspective this type of activity could be considered a temporarily productive factor. As we have already seen, the entrepreneurial leader is the person capable of initiating these actions and his or her role is indispensable in the economic process, or as Schumpeter puts it “in most cases… the means of production are replaceable, but not the leader”(p 144).
