The experiment on rearing the grass hopper Hieroglyphus tonkinensis Bolivar from 1 day old nymph to the physiological death on 5 food sources: leaves of Oryza sativa Linnaeus, Saccharum officinarum Linnaeus, Zea mays Linnaeus, Dendrocalamus barbatus Hsueh et Li and Indosasa crassiflora McClure was conducted at green house of department of plant protection of Hoa Binh province in 2011 and 2012. The results showed that time for all nymph phase on different leaves was different. The nymph duration of the grass hopper reared on leaves of O. sativa, S. officinarum, Z. mays, D. barbatus and I. crassiflora was 53.5, 52.4, 57.4, 55.2 and 53.7 days for male nymph and 61.6, 55.7, 67.3, 63.4 and 61.7 days for female nymph, respectively.
The food soure clearly influenced to the weight of the insect adults. Rearing on leaves of S. officinarum the weight of the insect adults was lowest, 374.1 mg (male) and 738.4 mg (female). Highest of the weight of the male insect adult was those reared on leaves of I. crassiflora, highest weight of the famale insect adult was those reared on leaves O. sativa (780.8 mg).
Rearing on the leaves of I. crassiflora, percentage of reproducing female of grass hopper (72.74%) and the number of egg clusters (30.32 egg/cluster) was lowest, while rearing on the leaves of O. sativa the above mentioned indicators were 90.48% and 40.23 egg/cluster were highest, respectively. However, food source did not induce significantly the number of egg-clutches laid by a single female as well as the hatching rate of egg.
