Abstract
Since 2004, Phu Yen PPSD have conducted rearing Asecodes hispinarum and released in the fields to control the coconut beetle but it was not successful. Year of 2008, Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Science (JIRCAS) to set up 2 surveying sites in Phu Yen to record some main weather factors and population dynamics of coconut beetle and introduced parasitoid. They confirmed that temperature is a major factor to limit for A. hispinarum population establishment. From 2011, in cooperation with JIRCAS, Phu Yen PPSD introduced another species of parasitoid named Tetrastichus brontispae Ferriere (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). Because T. bontispae was introduced in Vietnam in the first time so we have to determine their biological characteristics for rearing and releasing them in the fields. In the laboratory condition of temperature: 28±1oC, 70 - 80% RH and LD 12:12, the duration of stage from egg to mummy and stage from mummy to emergence of adult were 7 and 12 days, respectively. Developmental period from egg to emergence of adult lasted about 19 days.
Results of rearing adults of T. brontispae on the different solutions of honey in water (as 0%, 10%, 30%, 50%) showed that the solution of honey 30% was the best for adults of T. brontispae. It help lasting the female longevity, increasing number of offspring-wasps emerged from each mummy, increasing ratio of female wasps in offspring generation. So for mass- rearing T. bontispae it should be use the solution of honey 30% and adding honey every two days is the best.
Keywords: Parasitic wasps, Tetrastichus brontispae, Coconut Beetle, Phu Yen Province.
