Love united my poor students and me together. Through the love we had for each other, I was able to fully experience God’s presence among us. I truly saw Jesus in the poor children – their poverty, simple lifestyle, and abundance of love for others tremendously touched my heart. The kids had an unlimited amount of energy, were very loving in their warm hugs and smiles, and compassionate in their kind actions towards one another and their teachers.
I remember heart-touching moments like little Dani singing “Blessed Be Your Name” and “Jesus, Remember Me” with me for one hour non-stop while sitting on the lap of the statue of Jesus, Dara pointing to Jesus on the rosary around my neck that he wanted, saying “I want Pre Giêsu (Jesus in Khmer),” and Yang Do, Thi An, and Rach Sa asking me to go to Thi An’s small house with them to pray for their sick grandma. In the classroom, all my students were very excited to learn not only English, but to pray together in singing in English and Khmer. I remember everyday hearing the loud voices of many of my students, big and little, saying proudly, “au’kal chia nich!” (“forever”) after I shout “Pre Giêsu k’rong riet k’nong duon chat don khnum!” (“Live Jesus in our hearts!”) at the end of each class. Many times, other students like Sray Le and Sok Chiet Ta would just remind me of how much they love me by simply saying “I love Tri!” or even writing it on a piece of paper and giving it me as a present.
Never have I ever seen or felt love this great before among children. The children were truly poor in spirit, relying on God and one another each and everyday. Although physically poor, these children were rich in love and charity. They were very eager to study English, learn new things, and come together as a community to pray. Jesus always wants children to come to him, for he even said that the Kingdom of God belongs to such as them, the poor children of Po Thum. I am very grateful that my poor Po Thum students shared the Kingdom of God with me. I truly treasured every moment I spent with the children and will forever cherish the loving memories we have together. Thank you, Frere Phong, for allowing me to serve and fall in love with the young poor in Po Thum, Cambodia. Thank you, Jesus, for opening my eyes to see, hear, and love you and your beloved, poor children of Po Thum. Thank you, my dear students of La Salle Po Thum, for touching my heart, for humbling me, and for giving me the opportunity to serve you all with love and charity. Your hearts have truly touched mine. I thank you all for helping me live Jesus within my heart, forever, each and everyday.

Dear Pothum, La Salle,
Pothum has become my beloved place ever after the summer of 2013. I love the place not because of the name but it evokes sweet memories about my second childhood. Yes, I was lucky to have this second chance to be child-like again, to make sincere friendship with kids, to live among nature and love, to get away from daily business which drove me stress. How much I miss the time when we did morning and evening prayers together, offered God ourselves, and invited Him to be with us all day long. While saying prayers, sometimes I felt our breaths and heart beats harmonized to the sounds of nature and rhythm of the local lives_ a rare quiet peace to be found in city.
