Summary of chapter 2
In this chapter, an analysis of common literary devices manifesting Hemingway's Iceberg Theory has been thoroughly conducted by using a combination of approaches. The statistics illustrated by tables as well as several typical examples present readers with a more detailed look into the literary devices used during the writing process of Hemingway towards the completion of the novel “A Farewell to Arms”. The analysis, in large measure, reveals that Hemingway makes the best use of diction, parataxis, repetition and symbolism to illustrate his Iceberg Theory. Thereafter, the chapter has put forward some feasible suggestions to apply the model of Iceberg theory to academic learning for cadets at Military Science Academy in particular and learners of English language in general.
CONCLUSION
Throughout the paper, first of all, readers are acknowledged about Ernest Hemingway and his novel “A Farewell to Arms” and most importantly, several concepts and features of Hemingway's Iceberg Theory in general. Examining other research papers on Hemingway's Iceberg Theory, the study agrees with the idea that he used a variety of literary devices to manifest his Theory of Omission. Therefore, definitions of such devices were proposed in the first chapter, formulating the basics for further developments in the second one.
By employing the the Explanatory Design of a mixed-methods research and secondary data analysis, the second chapter of the study has conducted a survey into the usage frequency of common literary devices used in the novel that manifest Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory, which were analysed in details afterwards. The figures and analyses are pointed out with the aids of statistics and examples presented in table and wording format, giving clear descriptions and explanations of such deviations. The findings of the study have shown that the predominant literary devices used throughout the whole novel are symbolism, repetition, diction and parataxis. Having unfolded the profound themes behind such devices, the study then proposes to readers some personal comments on the work and the autthor Ernest Hemingway as well as her own experience analyzing the novel which, to a certain extent, might facilitate the process of appreciating other literary works using Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory.
There have been obviously numerous studies into Hemingway’s literary legacy, into which the study hopes to add a further interpretation with the analysis of Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory in the novel “A Farewell to Arms”. Besides, readers are likely to gain insights into the tremendous impacts of Hemingway’s writing style on not only literature but also other aspects such as culture and economics.
However, within the scope of the study, the researcher could not focus on every literary device used in the novel to manifest Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory; besides those which the researcher has already carried out an analysis on, some others to be mentioned are Hemingway’s narrative style, dialogue building technique and the list goes on. Therefore, the researcher proposes that several aspects manifesting Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory in the novel “A Farewell to Arms” should be focused on in further studies include Hemingway’ narrative techniques, Hemingway’s dialogue building technique and so forth. Besides, Hemingway’s Iceberg Theory in other literary works should also be topics of studies, namely The killers, For whom the bell toll or The sun also rise.
