Childhood
Jobs was born in San Francisco, California to his biological parents Joanne Schieble and John Jandali, both unmarried and still in college.
Their relationship was opposed because her mother's family did not approve of her (Catholic) relationship with Jandadi (Muslim) father. She could not leave her unmarried child, so she had to give away her child because she did not want the family to be ashamed.
Steven was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs, whom he always considered his real parents.
From an early age, Jobs was encouraged by his father to expose him to the mechanical world. He would spend many hours with his father, dismantling and assembling the electronics in the family garage.
Academically, after graduating from high school in 1972, he attended Reed University in Portland, Oregon.
However, he dropped out after six months and spent the next 18 months taking creative classes at the school. Jobs signed up for a calligraphy course and fell in love with it. He later said that course was the foundation for many of Apple's typefaces today.
Career
His first real computer job was as a technician at Atari, Inc. in Los Gatos, California, in 1973.
Together with Wozniak, he developed a circuit board that removed about 50 chips from the machine thus creating a similar compactness. This was followed by the development of digital 'blu boxes' that allowed free long distance calls.
