II. Difference 1. Vietnamese Vietnamese chat language has been strongly affected by regional dialects and originates from various sources: geographic name, fruit, animal, number, foreignism (email, phone…), nonsense words (kekeke, hehehe…), emoticons… Vietnamese capitalizes randomly. For example: ngườI iU, e Kòn đóa kHông??!!!! a nHo*’ E nhIU lA(‘m??!!! xAo KO TrA? Lo*`I tIn A?... @1**gg**1@ We don’t have a determinate system of chat language. Our chat language is mainly created by sudden inspiration, imitation and then become a trend. While communicating, chatters like to create new things individually and do not comply with any specific principles. This makes it difficult for us to have a Vietnamese dictionary of chat language.
English chat language has systematically developed and there are now many dictionaries of chat language, whereas we do not have any Vietnamese dictionary of chat language. English chatters use abbreviations more than Vietnamese ones, so in order to under their meanings we have to look at them in context. For example, there are approximately 100 words using “B” as their abbreviation.
And there are about 70 words using “C” in different situations:
Numbers have meanings and are numerously used. Meanwhile, they are limitedly used in Vietnamese. For instance:
Most of the English abbreviations are shorter than Vietnamese ones:
Western chatters seldom mention private and personal subjects because of broad-mindedness and free lifestyle. However, they often talk about sex and use pornographic photos. For this reason, Vietnamese chatters are afraid to get access to foreign websites. D. Teaching implications Chat language is becoming increasingly popular in the world. It was initiated by young people, although now it is widely used by older people too. A lot of scientists believe that in a couple of years chat language will have replaced the “normal”. Besides some advantages mentioned above, chat language has been a real problem for teens since it was introduced in the early twenty-first century. Teachers often report that student assignments are littered with typical instant messaging abbreviations. The fact that it really raises an alarm from teachers and parents. We need to take appropriate measures to restrict this type of language in school. First of all, linguists and teachers must be knowledgeable about this “new language”. After studying chat language thoroughly, teachers will show their understanding to the students. Then students will feel that they are shared, respected, beloved because their teachers know about a field which they are very interested in. From that point, they will be close to the teachers and take the teachers’ advice. Teachers will have to analyze and explain the harmful impacts of chat language on Vietnamese purity, the utterance and writing style of the students. This will help increase students’ judicious awareness of chat language. We should also help students to create a habit of using Vietnamese correctly. When they mistake standard language for chat language, Professor Cao Xuan Hao supposes that the best way to correct students’ spelling mistakes is to make students rewrite right words many times so that they can learn them by heart. In addition, teachers can use the following measures:
In sum, chat language has really penetrated into everyday life, school, examinations and students’ thought. In the face of such problems, we must take long-lasting measures to remain Vietnamese purity because the culture of a country is the language. People will erase the culture their country if they are not aware of the danger of chat language in daily life. E. Conclusion The essay acquires the following results:
