Số phân loại : 822.3 G109; Đặc điểm vật lý: 1183 p. : ill. ; 26 cm
*Tóm tắt : The book is divided into three parts. The first part, on The Culture, situates Middleton within an historical and theoretical overview of early modern textual production, reproduction, circulation, and reception. An introductory essay by Gary Taylor (The Order of Persons) surveys lists of persons written by or connected to Middleton, using the complex relationship between textual and social orders to trace the evolution of textual culture in England during the Middleton century (1580-1679). Ten original essays then focus on Middletons connections to different aspects of textual culture in that century: authorship (by MacD. P. Jackson), manuscripts (Harold Love), legal texts (Edward Geiskes), censorship (Richard Burt), printing (Adrian Weiss), visual texts (John Astington), music (Andrew Sabol), stationers and living authors (Cyndia Clegg), posthumous publishing (Maureen Bell), and early readers (John Jowett)      .

Số phân loại : 822.33 W719; Đặc điểm vật lý: ix, 225 p. : ill. ; 17 cm
*Tóm tắt : Shakespeare's vivid dramatic projection of moral and ethical issues in Measure for Measure has given the play great appeal to both readers and theatergoers. Exploring the play's qualities as a complex work of art written specifically for the theater, the introduction to this new edition sets the play in its historical context, discussing the originality of Shakespeare's treatment of a well-known story. Bawcutt explains the obsolete marriage customs, and also offers a comprehensive account of the text's theatrical afterlife from Restoration adaptations to recent productions      .

6068. Tác giả chính: William Shakespeare

Nhan đề: Love's labour's lost / William Shakespeare; Wilbur L Cross; Tucker Brooke
Số phân loại : 822.33 W309; Đặc điểm vật lý: 4 p. leaves, 153 p. : ill. (facsim.) ; 18 cm
*Tóm tắt : To begin the introduction, the editor discusses the link between Love’s Labour’s Lost and the writings of Sir Philip Sidney, the simple plot and its inconclusive ending, the relationship in the play between words and the things which they signify, and the play’s concern with the court. The following sections of the introduction examine the play’s style, from the structural devices and wordplay typical of Shakespeare to the repetition and allusion that are particularly abundant in this comedy; and the play’s structure, with focus on the play’s last scene, which is the longest in Shakespeare’s work. The editor finally addresses the play’s dating and possible sources, its early history and performance, and the subsequent reactions to and criticism of the play. This edition features five appendices that follow the text of Love’s Labour’s Lost. They include an examination of the play’s original texts, additional lines omitted in the text of this edition, and discussions of Moth’s name, rhymes, and compound words in the play. Also included are a preface, an index, and lists of illustrations, abbreviations, and references      .

6069. Tác giả chính: William Shakespeare

Nhan đề: King Lear / William Shakespeare; R A Foakes

6070. Tác giả chính: G.R. Hibbard

Nhan đề: The Oxford Shakespeare Hamlet / G.R. Hibbard
Số phân loại : 822.33 H624; Đặc điểm vật lý: 406 tr. ; 20 cm
*Tóm tắt : This edition of Hamlet represents a radically new text of the best known and most widely discussed of all Shakespearean tragedies. Arguing that the text currently accepted is not, in fact, the most authoritative version of the play, this new edition turns to the First Folio of 1623--Shakespeare's "fair copy"--that has been preserved for us in the Second Quarto. Introducing fresh theatrical momentum, this revision provides, as Shakespeare intended, a better, more practical acting script...      .

6071. Tác giả chính: R. W. Maslen

Nhan đề: Shakespeare and comedy / R. W. Maslen
Số phân loại : 822.33 M109; Đặc điểm vật lý: viii, 270 p. : ill. ; 20 cm
*Tóm tắt : Comedy was at the centre of a critical storm that raged throughout the early modern period. Shakespeare’s plays made capital of this controversy. In them he deliberately invokes the case against comedy made by the Elizabethan theatre haters. They are filled with jokes that go too far, laughter that hurts its victims, wordplay that turns to swordplay and aggressive acts of comic revenge. In a detailed study of seventeen plays,¬ tragedies and histories as well as comedies,¬ Maslen contends that Shakespeare’s use of the comic mode is always calculatedly unsettling, and that this is part of what makes it pleasurable      .

6072. Tác giả chính: Stanley Wells

Nhan đề: The Oxford Shakespeare / general editors Stanley Wells and Gary Taylor
Số phân loại : 822.33 S107; Đặc điểm vật lý: xxix, 541 p. ; 25cm
*Tóm tắt : This beautiful collection is the product of years of full-time research by a team of British and American scholars and represents the most thorough examination ever undertaken of the nature and authority of Shakespeare's work. The editors reconsidered every detail of the text in the light of modern scholarship and they thoroughly re-examined the earliest printed versions of the plays, firmly establishing the canon and chronological order of composition. All stage directions have been reconsidered in light of original staging, and many new directions for essential action have been added. This superb volume also features a brief introduction to each work as well as an illuminating General Introduction. Finally, the editors have added a wealth of secondary material, including an essay on language, a list of contemporary allusions to Shakespeare, an index of Shakespearean characters, a glossary, a consolidated bibliography, and an index of first lines of the Sonnets      .

6073. Tác giả chính: Edward Burns

Nhan đề: "King Henry VI" (Pt. 1) / Edward Burns. + Part 1
Số phân loại : 822.33 E201; Đặc điểm vật lý: xiv, 345 p. : 19 cm
*Tóm tắt : A fresh look at a play usually regarded as the first component of a three-part historical epic, this edition argues that Henry VI Part 1 is a "prequel," a freestanding piece that returns for ironic and dramatic effect to a story already familiar to its audience. The play's ingenious use of stage space is closely analyzed, as is its manipulation of a series of set-piece combats to give a coherent syntax of action. Discussion of the dramatic structure created by the opposing figures of Talbot and Jeanne la Pucelle, and exploration of the critical controversies and "puzzles" surrounding the figure of Jeanne, lead to a reflection on the nature of the history play as genre in the 1590s. Burns provides notes on his editorial procedure in the section before the play itself. Appendices on names, naming, and wordplay; casting; contemporary adaptations; and military hierarchy and the conduct of war in the age of Henry VI are also included      .

6074. Tác giả chính: Adrian A. Husain

Nhan đề: Politics and genre in "Hamlet" / Adrian A. Husain ; foreword by John Bayley
Số phân loại : 822.33 A102; Đặc điểm vật lý: xiv, 49 tr. ; 21 cm
*Tóm tắt : A leading literary critic takes a historicist view of Shakespeare's most famous and enigmatic play. It is concerned with identity, time and power in Hamlet and the question of aesthetic form in relation to all these. It takes a fresh look at a Renaissance hero who exists, oddly, on the margins of his play--and yet is condemned to be its hero. It frames the question that lies, implicitly, at the heart of Hamlet and, in some strange way, constitutes its tragedy: what is a play if not playacting? The second edition of the book clarifies and further corroborates this. The themes of incest and political legitimacy are addressed, the 'revision' theory is explored-and debunked-and the historical character of Richard examined in the context of Richard II in additional notes. Elsewhere, the author adduces fresh evidence to demonstrate what he sees as crucial to Hamlet: the protagonist's remarkable facility for and preoccupation with theatre screening and indeed impeding the moment of spontaneous historical action      .

6075. Tác giả chính: William Shakespeare

Nhan đề: Hamlet / William Shakespeare
Số phân loại : 822.33 W309; Đặc điểm vật lý: xxii, 613 p. : ill. ; 20 cm
Tác giả khác: Ann Thompson; Neil Taylor
*Tóm tắt : "The new Arden Hamlet is a pathbreaking edition, one that promises to change irrevocably our understanding of Shakespeare's greatest play." - Professor James Shapiro, author of 1599: A Year in the Life of William Shakespeare Â"Hamlet's latest editors have undertaken a heroic task with great skill and thoroughnesss.Â" - Stanley Wells, The Observer "(The) new Arden Hamlet is quite simply the most comprehensive edition of the play currently available, a status I suspect it will enjoy for many years to come" - The British Theatre Guide "Stunning! There is absolutely no doubt about this being the text to buy if you are studying the play at A Level. And the same stands for those students who will be studying the play at university. This critical edition gives the reader the Second Quarto Text (1604-1605), annotated with intelligence and care, a wealth of historical and cultural references and a survey of different critical approaches to the play." - The Use of English, The English Association      .

6076. Tác giả chính: Brian Vickers

Nhan đề: Shakespeare, co-author : a historical study of five collaborative plays / Brian Vickers
Số phân loại : 822.33 B301; Đặc điểm vật lý: 558 p. ill. ; 24 cm
*Tóm tắt : This major new study asks the question, "how much do we know about Shakespeare's collaborations with other dramatists?", and sets out to provide a detailed evaluation of the claims made for Shakespeare's co-authorship of Titus Andronicus, Timon of Athens, Pericles, Henry VIII, and The Two Noble Kinsmen. Through an examination of the processes of collaboration and the methods used in authorship studies since the early nineteenth century, Brian Vickers identifies a coherent tradition in attribution work on Shakespeare      .

6077. Tác giả chính: Richard Proudfoot

Nhan đề: In Arden : editing Shakespeare : essays in honour of Richard Proudfoot / Richard Proudfoot; Ann Thompson; Gordon McMullan
Số phân loại : 822.33 R302; Đặc điểm vật lý: xxiv, 288 p. : ill. ; 20 cm
     *Tóm tắt :      .

6078. Nhan đề: The complete works / William Shakespeare... [et al.]

*Tóm tắt : Here are all of Shakespeare's plays and poems in a compact edition that fits nearly onto your bookshelf or comfortably in your lap. And, as if all of the Bard were not enough, this reissue of an Oxford Classic offers something more: editions of the plays in their theatrical versions, as they were originally performed on the Elizabethan stage. This edition also features a brief introduction to each work, as well as an illuminating General Introduction; reconsiders every detail of the text and presentation of Shakespeare's complete works in the light of modern scholarship; re-examines the nature and authority of the early documents, and freshly establishes the canon and chronological order of composition; and modernizes spelling and punctuation to make the works more accessible to modern readers, without ever altering their original language or meter      .

6079. Tác giả chính: John Lee

Nhan đề: Shakespeare’s Hamlet and the controversies of self / John Lee
Số phân loại : 822.33 J427; Đặc điểm vật lý: 266 p. ; 4c24 cm
*Tóm tắt : This book offers a new approach to the discussion of English Renaissance literary subjectivity. Dissatisfied with much New Historicist and Cultural Materialistic criticism, it attempts to trace the history of the controversies of self. William Hazlitt emerges as a pioneering figure in a tradition of literary criticism which this book tries to advance. Drawing on the personal construct theory of George A. Kelly, and on the moral theory of Alasdair MacIntyre, the textual ways are traced by which "That within" Hamlet is constructed. In an argument that challenges some of the founding propositions of New Historicist and Cultural Materialist practice, the Prince is seen to have a self-constituting, as opposed to a self-fashioning, sense of self. This sense of self is neither essentialist nor transhistorical; using the work of Charles Taylor, the play is seen to be exploring a Montaignesque, as opposed to Cartesian, notion of subjectivity. The controversies of self are, in fact, an issue within Shakespeare's play; and if the notion of Folio and Quarto Princes is allowed, it may even be at issue within the play. Hamlet debates our debate      .

6080. Tác giả chính: Adrian A. Husain

Nhan đề: Politics and genre in "Hamlet" / Adrian A. Husain ; foreword by John Bayley
Số phân loại : 822.33 A102; Đặc điểm vật lý: 49 p. : ill. ; 21 cm
Tác giả khác: John Bayley
*Tóm tắt : This is a historicist study constituting a significant departure from the New Historicist or "cultural" approach to Shakespeare. It examines the question of genre in relation to identity, time and power in the play against the backdrop of the Renaissance in Europe. It looks at identity as a typically Renaissance phenomenon: a theatrical construct alternating between the Machiavellian and the Castiglionesque      .

6081. Tác giả chính: E.A.J Honigmann

Nhan đề: Othello / E.A.J Honigmann
Số phân loại : 822.33 H431; Đặc điểm vật lý: 409 p. ; 22 cm
*Tóm tắt : This edition sheds new light on the text of the play as we have come to know it, and on our knowledge of its early history. Honigmann examines the thematic portrayal of feminism, morality, and otherness. He provides a general character criticism, but delves more deeply into Othello, Iago, Desdemona, and Emilia in individual sections. He discusses the play in performance and the relationship between reading it and seeing it. He also explores topics such as its date, sources, and the conundrum of "double time"      .

6082. Tác giả chính: William Shakespeare

Nhan đề: As you like it / William Shakespeare; Juliet Dusinberre
Số phân loại : 822.33 W309; Đặc điểm vật lý: xviii, 449 p. : ill., map, facsims. ; 21 cm
Tác giả khác: Juliet Dusinberre
*Tóm tắt : With its explorations of sexual ambivalence, As You Like It speaks directly to the twenty-first century. Juliet Dusinberre demonstrates that Rosalind’s authority in the play grows from new ideas about women and reveals that Shakespeare’s heroine reinvents herself for every age. But the play is also deeply rooted in Elizabethan culture and through it Shakespeare addresses some of the hotly debated issues of the period. "This will be the definitive edition of As You Like It for many years to come" - Phyllis Rackin, University of Pennsylvania      .

6083. Tác giả chính: Claire McEachern

Nhan đề: Much ado about nothing / edited by Claire McEachern
Số phân loại : 822.33 C103; Đặc điểm vật lý: 345 p. : ill. ; 20 cm
*Tóm tắt : This edition of the play offers in its introduction and commentary an extensive discussion of the materials that informed Shakespeare's compositional choices, both those conventional sources and other contexts, from cuckold jokes to conduct books, which inform the ideas and identities of this play. Particular attention is devoted to Renaissance understandings of gender identity and social rank, as well as to the social valences of Shakespeare's stylistic choices. Among the elements of structure and style discussed are the two concurrent plots, the recurrence of verbal handshakes, and the use of music.  A treatment of staging possibilities offers illustrations drawn from the earliest and recent theatrical practices, and a critical history examines the fate of the play in the changing trends of academic scholarship      .

6084. Tác giả chính: Charlotte Scott

6085. Nhan đề: The complete works / William Shakespeare... [et al.]

Số phân loại : 822.33 W309; Đặc điểm vật lý: xlix, 1274 p. : ill. ; 25 cm
